Sequence 9: Sleepless 109 Retrospectively stated to have become a Sleepless three years earlier. Initially struggled to control his enhanced physical abilities.
Sequence 8: Midnight Poet 21 44 73 Introduces himself at this Sequence. Uses poetry and chanting to influence nearby living beings, including putting targets to sleep.

Sequence 4: Nightwatcher 1287 Advances on the front lines during the final stage of the war and becomes a senior deacon. Prepares to return to the Holy Cathedral for study and receive a corresponding holy artifact.

Appearance

  • Hair and eyes: Black hair and emerald-green eyes; his hair is frequently disheveled or only casually smoothed back 21 119 756.
  • Features: Handsome, with a romantic, poetlike air and an unconventional beauty despite his lack of grooming 119.
  • Everyday clothing: Favors untucked white shirts, trousers, and casually worn black waistcoats 21 42 758.
  • Official clothing: Wears a black trench coat and red gloves as a Red Glove; also uses a checked police uniform when conducting official operations 404 1137.

Personality

Leonard’s relaxed appearance reflects an easygoing, teasing, and sometimes impolite manner. He habitually rests his feet on desks or coffee tables and jokes with Klein about entertaining women. Klein eventually describes him as careless, simple, impulsive, rebellious, and brave, with keen intuition and striking deductive ability in certain matters 126 211 1048 1376.

Early on, Leonard considers himself unusually special—the protagonist of his era. His awareness of another secretive Beyonder makes him willing to respect Klein’s privacy, and the two agree to judge one another by their actions rather than investigate each other’s secrets 121 613.

The Tingen tragedy leaves him numb and withdrawn, then intensely focused on revenge. Although outwardly languid during his time with Soest’s team, he remains concerned for the colleagues who fight beside him. Pallez later recognizes his growing restraint when Leonard asks what he can realistically contribute against Ince Zangwill instead of immediately demanding to join the pursuit 211 915 990.

Despite his Midnight Poet title and fondness for freedom, Leonard has no genuine literary talent. He relies on reciting existing poetry rather than composing it himself 1077 1376.

Abilities & Skills

Poetry and Chanting

Leonard’s Midnight Poet abilities influence living beings through recitation 73.

  • His lullaby-like chanting puts Elliott Vickroy’s kidnappers to sleep 44.
  • Nearby allies can also feel its effects: Klein becomes hazy and emotionally tranquil while listening 44.
  • Recitation requires him to speak; an icy, death-laden wind briefly leaves his teeth chattering and prevents him from beginning a poem 123.
  • After becoming a Spirit Warlock, he delegates recitation to suitable collected spirits, allowing them to provide support during combat 1409.

Dreams and Nightmare Form

Leonard can draw others into dreams, enter existing dreams, and question sleeping targets 613 757.

  • Pulls Emlyn White into a dream almost without Emlyn noticing 613.
  • Investigates Sherlock Moriarty by questioning acquaintances in their dreams 757 763.
  • Puts Snowman to sleep without an audible chant or visible warning 1073.
  • Can guide dreams toward subconscious information, though Spectator-pathway specialists are more precise and effective in that domain 1073.
  • His dream abilities originate from his Astral Body, allowing him to use them above the gray fog even when Klein leaves his Spirit Body behind 961.

Spirit Perception and Spirit Warlock Abilities

  • Spirit Intuition: Benefits from the Sleepless Sequence’s strong intuitive perception 172.
  • Spirit Vision: Can see ghosts and spirits, but his early Spirit Vision only distinguishes pale white or light-blue aura colors and cannot accurately diagnose individual body parts 172.
  • Direct spiritual sight: As a Spirit Warlock, can see spirit creatures such as Reinette Tinekerr directly 1004.
  • Collected spirits: Employs spirits with suitable abilities to recite poetry and support him in combat 1409.

Combat and Investigation

  • Trained in fighting, shooting, climbing, and sensing; personally acknowledges that locating missing people is not his specialty 42.
  • Recognizes an inverted Southern Continent mausoleum as a symbol associated with Death and its descendants 161.
  • Connects apparently unrelated deaths to a ritual that brings forward the deaths of people already likely to die 121.
  • Traces recurring names and circumstances across case files to connect Sherlock Moriarty, the Black Emperor incidents, and the organization worshiping The Fool 854 858.

Assistance from Pallez Zoroast

Pallez’s powers are separate from Leonard’s own abilities. The angel provides protection, historical knowledge, mystical instruction, and materials that Leonard could not otherwise readily obtain 942 1378.

  • Supplies Worms of Time for high-level charms 942.
  • Advises on Amon’s avatars and the concealment needed to fight them 996.
  • Can parasitize mystical items with living characteristics to suppress their negative effects 1335.
  • Remains a potential danger: Leonard recognizes that a malicious Parasite could control his fate despite his own advancement to Saint 1378.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Revolver — A regular weapon during investigations and supernatural encounters 109 123.
  • Poetry collections — Owns Collection of Early Loen Classical Poetry and Selected Poems of Roselle. Initially uses such works for his acting; later returns to buying poetry collections to spread legends 97 1409.
  • Blood Vessel Thief — Used with Pallez’s assistance to steal Megose’s strongest power during the Tingen crisis 613.
  • Sealed Artifact 1-42 — Temporarily wears this bloodstained silver armor during a Red Gloves operation. It locks onto an Apostle of Desire who has abandoned his body through Shadow Transformation; Soest closely monitors Leonard’s remaining usage time 426 428.
  • Fate Siphon charm — Uses a charm in the battle against Ince Zangwill to transfer the fate of suffering a lightning storm to his enemy 953 954.
  • Creeping Hunger — Borrows Klein’s glove for operations, including a three-hour loan to record useful powers such as Bribe–Weaken 1013.
  • Words of the Sea — Its living characteristics allow Pallez to make it obedient and reduce its negative effects 1335.

Background / History

Tingen Nighthawks

Leonard serves under Dunn Smith in Tingen and introduces himself to Klein as a Sequence 8 Midnight Poet. Already aware that Klein survived an unusual incident, he takes an interest in his new colleague and consults the hidden presence within himself about him 21.

He works with Klein to rescue Elliott Vickroy, participates in the operation involving Riel Bieber and the Antigonus Family Notebook, and investigates the disturbance at Chanis Gate. Later assignments include ritual-related deaths, suspected hauntings in Morse Town, and the search for Lanarvus 44 76 109 121 161 203.

After the Tingen tragedy, Leonard informs Melissa and Benson that Klein died saving people and attends his funeral. Learning that Ince Zangwill and Sealed Artifact 0-08 were involved gives his grief a direction: he decides to apply to the Red Gloves, whose authority permits pursuit beyond a local Nighthawks team’s jurisdiction 211.

Joining the Red Gloves

At Serenity Cathedral, Leonard advances and stabilizes his condition, though memories of Dunn and Klein continue to intrude on his daily life. Crestet Cesimir officially welcomes him into the Red Gloves and assigns him, at his request, to Soest’s team 365 404.

His work includes a devil-summoning investigation and inquiries into tarot-related incidents in Backlund. During this period, he also confronts the Parasite inside him, who explains that he is recovering while hiding from an enemy named Amon 366 404.

Investigating Klein’s Identities

Emlyn’s visit to purchase a power-stealing item creates another connection to Sherlock Moriarty, whom Leonard has already encountered in case records. Leonard follows these leads through files and dream interrogations 613 617 757 763.

He separately investigates Dawn Dantès after Pallez detects something unusual about him. Klein responds with the warning “Zoroast; Parasite,” prompting Leonard to suspend that inquiry temporarily 758.

After the infiltration of Saint Samuel Cathedral, Leonard resumes investigating Dawn and recognizes Sherlock’s resemblance to Klein. Confronting Dawn in a dream confirms that Klein survived and is pursuing revenge against Lanarvus and Ince Zangwill. Leonard chooses not to expose what he has learned 854 858 860.

Revenge Against Ince Zangwill

Leonard travels to the Southern Continent with Soest’s team to investigate the Artificial Death faction. He maintains contact with Klein and warns him indirectly about 0-08 with the phrase “Once you know it, it knows you” 892 915.

With Pallez’s help, he obtains two Worms of Time for charms and works with Daly to investigate Ince’s movements. In the final confrontation, he uses Fate Siphon and recorded powers against Ince, but is caught in deathly darkness before Klein intervenes and kills their enemy 942 953 954.

The Star and the Threat of Amon

Leonard joins the Tarot Club and draws The Star. Klein brings only his Astral Body above the gray fog, excluding Pallez, with the intention of helping Leonard grow stronger and become less dependent on the angel 961.

He subsequently serves as an intermediary between Klein and Pallez in planning against Amon. He also explores the dreams within Groselle’s Travels alongside Klein and Audrey, learning about the Fourth Epoch and Pallez’s family through Mobett Zoroast 996 1072 1074 1075.

Amon eventually traps Leonard and Pallez at 7 Pinster Street. His divine ravings push Leonard toward losing control, but Pallez forces him out of the Corpse Cathedral. Leonard prays to The Fool, and Klein instructs him to seek refuge at Evernight’s cathedral 1218.

Senior Deacon and The Fool’s Slumber

Leonard becomes a Nightwatcher on the front lines during the war’s final stage. Reunited with Klein at Saint Samuel Cathedral afterward, he questions whether the earlier defeats and suffering were merely bait in a larger divine struggle 1287.

As a senior deacon, his first assignment concerns Merlin Hermes and reports of miraculous wish fulfillment. Pallez remains with him, explaining that the approaching confrontation between The Fool and Amon makes shelter under Evernight’s gaze especially valuable 1335 1378.

After The Fool enters slumber, Leonard asks whether Pallez can awaken Klein. Learning that the problem is corruption rather than injury, he turns to his assigned task: buying poetry collections to help spread the corresponding legends 1409.

Relationships

  • Klein Moretti / The World — Former Tingen teammate and fellow survivor. Their mutual secrecy develops into cooperation against Ince Zangwill and Amon; Klein recruits him into the Tarot Club partly to reduce his dependence on Pallez 121 954 961 996.
  • Pallez Zoroast — Parasitic angel, adviser, and protector, addressed as “Old Man.” Leonard values his guidance but would prefer him to live separately as an elder rather than remain inside his body 974 1378.
  • Dunn Smith — Former captain. His death drives Leonard’s pursuit of revenge, and Leonard continues to remember him after leaving Tingen 211 365.
  • Daly Simone — Ally in investigating and confronting Ince Zangwill; offers to help Leonard with anything concerning their shared enemy 942 954.
  • Soest — Red Gloves captain whom Leonard specifically requests to serve under. Leonard remains concerned for his team after receiving his own responsibilities 404 990.
  • Audrey Hall / Justice — Tarot Club colleague and fellow dream explorer. Her rapid advancement challenges Leonard’s pride in his own progress 1072 1073.
  • Emlyn White / The Moon — Initially a suspicious visitor and investigative lead; later a Tarot Club colleague involved in arranging Father Utravsky’s peaceful protective detention 613 617 1137.
  • Ince Zangwill — Enemy responsible for the Tingen tragedy; Leonard participates in the battle that ends in his death 211 953 954.
  • Amon — Pallez’s pursuer and a direct threat to Leonard, nearly causing him to lose control during the trap at Pinster Street 366 1218.

Trivia

  • Shortly after becoming a Sleepless, Leonard tried sprinting downstairs before adapting to his new strength and ended up tumbling down them 109.
  • He prefers cigars to cigarettes 45.
  • He dislikes wearing hats 1023.
  • During Elliott’s rescue, he considers requesting a Feynapotter lyre because chanting ought to have musical accompaniment 44.
