| Sequence 1 — Attendant of Mysteries | 1373 | Stabilizes the balance between his anchors, the Celestial Worthy’s will, and his consciousness. Examines powers including Regeneration, which can draw Spirit Body Threads from suitable objects. |
| Sequence 0 — The Fool | 1397 | His ritual is disrupted by prophecy, returned suicidal thoughts, and Antigonus’s fate. The Evernight Goddess kills him before he loses control; he resurrects with his digested characteristics restored and emerges as The Fool. |
Background / History
Earth, the Moretti Family, and Tingen
Klein retains fragments of the original Klein Moretti’s memories while recognizing himself as someone from Earth. His initial pursuit of mysticism is driven by the hope of finding a way home. He recognizes the apparently coded symbols in Roselle Gustav’s diary as simplified Chinese, giving him access to information his colleagues cannot read 20 24 84 955.
The Moretti household initially depends heavily on Benson, who supports Klein’s university education and Melissa’s mechanical studies despite an increasingly difficult job. After obtaining paid employment, Klein helps move the family from shared accommodation to No. 2 Daffodil Street. He wants both better living conditions for Melissa and enough privacy to conduct rituals 3 24 30.
Joining the Nighthawks
Klein accepts Dunn Smith’s invitation to become a civilian Nighthawk employee, then formally joins the Tingen team. His official appointment doubles his weekly salary to six pounds, grants him the rank of probationary inspector, and requires weekly duty at Chanis Gate. He must conceal the work from his family and cannot leave Tingen without permission 16 77.
His work combines supernatural investigation, divination, and increasingly dangerous field assignments. Killing the tailcoated Secret Order Beyonder leaves him psychologically shaken; he also fears that the organization’s Seers might identify him through divination and seek revenge 78 79.
Death and Separation from His Family
Klein dies after his heart is shattered and subsequently returns from the grave. Benson and Melissa mourn him, while Azik visits his grave and apologizes for arriving ten minutes too late 211 465.
After returning to Daffodil Street, Klein decides against revealing his survival. He believes remaining officially dead will prevent his future activities from implicating his siblings, whose compensation should support a stable middle-class life. He watches them from a distance before leaving Tingen 213.
Detective Work in Backlund
Under the Sherlock Moriarty identity, Klein works as a private detective while pursuing potion ingredients and supernatural intelligence 316 778. His cases include destroying the entity haunting Adol Calman, investigating violence connected to the Rose School of Thought, and examining the suspected curse that kills his friend Talym Dumont 300 330 439.
He also invests one hundred pounds in Leppard’s bicycle project for a thirty-five-percent share, recommending a simpler vehicle suited to everyday customers 228. During the operation against Capim’s group, he survives repeated attacks with Paper Figurine Substitutes and ignites accumulated coal gas to destroy the dining room 380.
Maritime Journey and Return to Backlund
Klein’s maritime activities bring him into contact with pirates, dangerous artifacts, and Spirit World creatures. He contracts Reinette Tinekerr as his messenger and manages the escalating accidents caused by the Die of Probability 501 564 610. His search for mermaids culminates in his advancement to Marionettist 669.
Back in Backlund, he operates as Dawn Dantès while continuing missions as Gehrman Sparrow. He kills Mr. X using Death Knell and recorded powers from Lemano’s Travel Notes, then escapes an Aurora Order demigod 785 870. After becoming a Bizarro Sorcerer, he entrusts Daly’s body to Leonard and states that he can no longer return to the Church 955.
War, Amon, and the Forsaken Land of the Gods
When Feysac attacks Backlund and Pritz Harbor, Klein authorizes Audrey to use Dawn Dantès’s resources for injured charity beneficiaries, food, and medical supplies. With Zaratul in Backlund, he warns Sharron and Maric and goes into hiding with his marionettes 1098.
His flight from Zaratul requires Arianna’s intervention. Soon afterward, Enuni’s appearance reveals that his own marionettes can be used to track him 1161. Trapped with Amon in the Forsaken Land of the Gods, Klein repeatedly attempts escape rather than accepting the offer to become Amon’s Blessed 1169 1177.
The True Creator later implants a compulsion directing Klein toward Sasrir at the Giant King’s Court. Klein escapes to Sefirah Castle, where he can contain—but not remove—the corruption, and prepares the characteristics needed for his next advancement 1261 1263.
Wishes and Apotheosis
As a Miracle Invoker, Klein travels as Merlin Hermes. During the Beldan incident, he checks for remaining dangers, helps survivors, fulfills Roy’s wish for another potion, and Teleports the group out of the city 1305.
His final documented advancement pits him against Amon, the Ancient Sun God’s prophecy, Antigonus’s loss of control, and the awakening Celestial Worthy. The Evernight Goddess’s intervention enables his death and resurrection within the ritual, after which he confronts Amon as The Fool 1397.
Appearance
- Natural appearance: Black hair, brown eyes, a slender build, ordinary features with pronounced contours, and a distinct scholarly air 807 955.
- Early clothing: A low-crowned top hat, formal suits, and a silver-inlaid cane 20 29 83.
- Disguises: Regularly changes his appearance and clothing to separate identities or evade pursuit 785 1098 1161.
- Bizarro Sorcerer transformation: Transparent worms appear across his face, hands, neck, and beneath his clothes before withdrawing into his body 955.
- The Fool: Appears beneath a dark cloak after completing his Sequence 0 advancement 1397.
Personality
Klein is cautious, analytical, and reluctant to mistake supernatural advantages for certainty. He tests potions and threats with divination, prepares escape methods, and explicitly warns against relying too heavily on any one ability. His caution does not make him fearless: early combat leaves him shaken, and Amon’s repeated destruction of his escape plans brings him close to despair 78 168 299 1177.
Humor frequently separates his inner thoughts from his composed public manner. He jokes about Seers and Clowns belonging in a circus, teases his siblings, and privately mocks the lofty personas he maintains. As The Fool, he often conceals uncertainty behind restrained gestures and ambiguous statements 24 61 78 343.
His attachment to Benson and Melissa becomes increasingly natural despite his awareness that he occupies another person’s body. He feels guilty about lying to them and ultimately treats distance as a form of protection. His original wish to return home also leads him to avoid romantic commitments that might leave emotional debts behind 50 84 108 1288.
Klein describes himself as someone who protects himself and fears danger, yet can give everything for what he stands by. His practical compassion extends from helping people he encounters to supporting wartime relief and protecting Tarot Club members from knowledge that could endanger them 70 955 1098 1113.
Abilities & Skills
Divination and Spiritual Perception
Klein uses divination for investigation, preparation, and threat assessment 49 99 195.
- Employs spirit pendulums, Dream Divination, dowsing, and card-based methods 49 99 316.
- Uses Spirit Vision to examine auras, health, and supernatural traces, including the fading black energy associated with Talym’s death 175 439.
- Recognizes that revelations can be symbolic, vague, or impossible to obtain without sufficient preliminary information 99 133.
- Can be affected by suppression from a higher-Sequence Beyonder of the same pathway 240.
- After becoming a Magician, can attempt to divine formulas from Beyonder Characteristics above the gray fog, though failure remains likely 382.
Clown’s Bodily Control and Premonitions
The Clown potion gives Klein precise control over movement, facial expressions, and body language 169.
- Uses bodily control for evasive maneuvers and convincing deception 169 229.
- Throws ordinary paper hard enough to pierce a wall 169.
- Receives fleeting intuitive premonitions that can change a battle’s outcome, but cannot reliably capture every warning 169.
- At Sequence 4, combines strengthened premonitions with the gray fog’s power to perceive a visitor’s appearance and movements from a considerable distance 986.
Magician’s Spells
Klein’s Magician abilities emphasize survival, escape, and adaptable combinations rather than overwhelming direct offense 297 299.
- Flame Jump: Initially moves between prepared fire seeds or existing flames within thirty meters; the range improves with digestion and advancement 297.
- Air Bullet: Fires compressed-air attacks through simple gestures or sounds, initially comparable to a specially made revolver’s bullets 297.
- Paper Figurine Substitute: Uses prepared paper figures to survive otherwise lethal attacks 299 380.
- Flame Manipulation: Ignites hazards and burns through restraints, including the coal gas trap used against Hunas and Kitty 380 480.
- Other retained powers: Underwater Breathing and Bone Softening remain part of his later repertoire 1172.
- Rapid casting: A simple gesture can activate a spell without a spoken incantation 297.
Marionettes and Spirit Body Threads
As a Marionettist and Bizarro Sorcerer, Klein manipulates Spirit Body Threads and turns targets into marionettes 843 992.
- Uses Senor’s Wraith abilities for exploration, combat, and movement through obstacles 741 785.
- Swaps positions with marionettes to evade attacks and conceal his true location 992 1172.
- Bestows his own Beyonder powers on marionettes by placing Worms of Spirit inside them 992.
- At the documented Bizarro Sorcerer stage, has a base thread-manipulation range of 150 meters, a marionette-control range of one kilometer, and a limit of fifty marionettes 992.
- Cannot grant marionettes self-awareness or thought. Marionette chains do not bypass his overall control-range restriction 992.
- At Scholar of Yore, can convert targets below Sequence 5 within two or three seconds under the described conditions 1172.
Worms of Spirit
Worms of Spirit form part of Klein’s Mythical Creature structure and support his distributed powers 992.
- Can separate up to fifty at the documented Bizarro Sorcerer stage; exceeding that limit risks spiritual overload, split personality, and worsening loss-of-control tendencies 992.
- Reaches a separation limit of six hundred as a Scholar of Yore 1149.
- Uses two Worms and the gray fog’s power to create Spirit Control Bullets capable of briefly paralyzing even a Sequence 3 Saint 1003.
- Suffers injury to his Spirit Body when a Worm is destroyed 1003.
Historical Projections and Wishes
Higher Sequences expand Klein’s access to the Fog of History and introduce wish-based powers 1149 1283.
- Summons Historical Void projections, including food and supernatural assistance 1169 1172.
- Attempts to conceal an escape by having a hundred marionettes summon Reinette Tinekerr; Amon counters by stealing her projection 1169.
- Gains Wishes as a core Miracle Invoker ability 1283.
- Fulfills requests while traveling as Merlin Hermes, including Roy’s wish to obtain another potion 1305.
Sefirah Castle and the Gray Fog
Klein’s control over the mysterious space grows alongside his Sequence 77 986.
- Convenes Tarot Club gatherings and communicates through members’ crimson stars and prayers 143 189 236.
- Establishes sacrificial rituals for confidential exchanges of physical materials 221 222 230.
- Summons himself as a special spirit body capable of passing through physical barriers and receiving intuitive danger warnings 195.
- Creates Paper Angel effects that interfere with divination and prophecy 783.
- At Sequence 4, can project power approaching an angel’s level when augmented by a Card of Blasphemy and the Sea God Scepter 986.
- Contains the True Creator’s corruption within Sefirah Castle but cannot simply remove it 1261.
- Still enters the castle only in spirit form immediately after becoming a Miracle Invoker 1283.
Dream Lucidity
Klein retains rational awareness when subjected to forced dreams or hypnosis-like effects 198.
- Remains lucid during encounters with Dunn’s Nightmare powers and Daly’s Spirit Channeling 198.
- Exploits this trait by putting both himself and Madam Shermane to sleep, then recovering awareness within the dream 198.
Regeneration
As an Attendant of Mysteries, Klein can summon Spirit Body Threads from objects whose materials once possessed a Spirit Body 1373.
- Turns qualifying objects into marionettes 1373.
- Can also make living beings into marionettes through their deep connection with an affected object 1373.
Practical Skills
- Cooking: Prepares dishes praised by both Benson and Melissa; continues experimenting with food rather than accepting Loen’s repetitive breakfasts 105 106 228.
- Chinese literacy: Reads Roselle’s diary without requiring its supposed cipher to be decoded 20.
- Investigation: Combines searches, witness information, divination, Spirit Vision, and spirit-form reconnaissance 195 300 330.
- Acting and deception: Maintains separate identities and simultaneously performs The Fool and The World during Tarot gatherings 343 443.

- Zaratul — Higher-Sequence pursuer whose presence forces Klein into hiding and whose pursuit through the Fog of History nearly catches him 1098 1161.

- Dual roles: Presides as The Fool while controlling The World as a separate participant, allowing him to conduct transactions without exposing his position 343 443.
