Power Progression

The documented progression concerns Klein’s access to the fog and Sefirah Castle, rather than the fog advancing through Sequences.

Appearance and Structure

The fog forms an apparently boundless grayish-white expanse beneath a towering ancient palace. During Klein’s early visits, it resembles a sea stretching below his feet 455 1138.

• Gathering palace: Contains a mottled bronze table and twenty-two high-backed chairs. Klein later identifies the furnishings as manifestations of Sefirah Castle’s wish-granting power, rather than its true core 961 1284.
• Crimson stars: Represent established spiritual connections. Prayers make them expand, contract, and release rings of light carrying voices 311 1171.
• Stairway of light: Appears beyond the palace after Klein reaches Sequence 6 and leads toward the space’s deeper mysteries 455 619.
• Door of Light: Sefirah Castle’s core is tinged bluish-black and composed of countless light spheres, each formed from clustered translucent worms 1150 1284.
• Suspended cocoons: Transparent cocoons hang from the Door of Light on thin black threads, containing people connected to the apparent transmigration phenomenon 1150 1183.
• Historical fragments: Points and fragments of light within the fog allow Klein to examine illuminated portions of history 1181 1183 1367.

Background / History

Ancient Origins and the Western Continent

Ancient accounts identify Sefirah Castle as one of nine things left behind by the Original Creator. Flegrea, the King of Demonic Wolves, named it and called the Hounds of Fulgrim its keepers, although he never entered it himself 1147 1151.

The Evernight Goddess later confirms that the Lord of Mysteries used Sefirah Castle’s power to seal every other sefirah except the Chaos Sea in the Western Continent. The grayish-white fog surrounding that continent, the River of Eternal Darkness, and the city behind the door in Bansy Harbor is connected to this seal 1386.

Connection to “Transmigration”

Roselle recorded that recreating a mysterious silver medallion from his former life allowed him to see boundless grayish-white fog, but not enter the space. Reading this account led Klein to suspect that their apparent transmigrations shared a connection to the fog 619.

Klein later examines historical fragments showing both Zhou Mingrui and Roselle’s former self, Huang Tao, suspended in cocoons above the Door of Light. Another fragment reveals a woman in a third cocoon. Klein concludes that objects and rituals—including his Luck Enhancement Ritual—had drawn people into Sefirah Castle, rather than selecting them individually 1181 1183.

Identification as Sefirah Castle

The Hounds of Fulgrim provide Klein with the first decisive clue to the space’s identity. They recognize him, offer their eyes and blood, and return to darker patches within the fog. Klein infers that his repeated passages through it have made the castle’s guardians regard him as their master 1138.

From this encounter, Klein proposes that the fog symbolically manifests the history interwoven within the Spirit World, with gaps in which the hounds dwell. His subsequent use of the Fog of History allows him to investigate his own capture and the other suspended people 1138 1181 1183.

Contests for Control

Amon repeatedly attempts to enter through Klein’s connections: first through Derrick’s crimson star, later through Klein himself and a manipulated Historical Projection. Klein repels these attempts with the space’s power, artifacts, and—during his escape from Amon—the Evernight Goddess’s intervention through Badheil 364 1179 1180 1257.

During the struggle surrounding The Fool’s advancement, the awakening Celestial Worthy can also control Sefirah Castle. Klein contests that control to weaken him. Amon subsequently releases his own suppression of the Lord of Mysteries’ will, using their shared connection to enter the castle and challenge Klein’s ownership directly 1396 1398.

Tarot Club After Klein’s Announcement

After the confrontation, Klein returns to Sefirah Castle and summons an impromptu Tarot Gathering. He announces that he will enter a slumber involving a conflict beyond the Sequence 1405 1406.

He permits members to continue meeting there on the first Monday afternoon of each month without a convener. Smaller private discussions remain possible through advance prayer and a response 1407.

Spiritual Connections and Prayer

The fog and crimson stars provide connections that are not limited by ordinary distance 58.

• Summoning participants: Klein draws people into the gathering through their established connections; Leonard is brought in as an Astral Body to avoid bringing Pallez Zoroast with him 227 311 961.
• Receiving and answering prayers: Prayer voices reach the space through stars or points of light, and Klein can return messages or manifestations through them 67 419 1171.
• Cross-world reach: Danitz’s prayers still reach Klein from inside Groselle’s Travels. The Forsaken Land of the Gods likewise does not sever Klein’s connection 699 1167.
• Connection requirement: Klein cannot simply pull in any person he observes. Myrgongen’s failure to recite The Fool’s honorific name prevents Klein from bringing him above the fog 1133.
• Honorific precision: “Mysterious Ruler Above the Gray Fog” binds Klein’s honorific name to the fog and Sefirah Castle, helping it identify him precisely 1229.

Divination and Spiritual Observation

The space enhances Klein’s divination and provides a vantage point through prayer connections 99 1001.

• Enhanced results: Klein uses its augmentation to confirm information such as the Sequence following Seer 99.
• Astral Body inspection: After becoming a demigod, he can identify Tarot Club members’ pathways and Sequence levels from their Astral Bodies 1045.
• Detection of fate substitution: Observation through a believer’s prayer can expose abnormalities associated with Amon’s theft of fate 1001 1187.
• Artifact-assisted surveillance: The Sea God Scepter extends observation through believers. Its five-nautical-mile range is an artifact limit, not a stated universal range of the fog 1030.
• No guarantee of safe knowledge: Divining higher beings can still cause severe backlash, and some targets remain obscured 140 1043 1272.

Concealment and Fate Interference

The fog disrupts attempts to trace Klein and interferes with certain supernatural influences on him 230 616.

• Anti-divination: Keeping the bloodstained contract above the fog obstructs divination into the supernatural circumstances of Meursault’s death 230.
• Danger premonition interference: Klein believes he can use it to prevent an Apostle of Desire from sensing his plans too far in advance 417.
• Luck interference: Ricciardo’s bestowed luck fails to affect Klein; Klein attributes this to the fog’s interference and infers that comparable misfortune may also be blocked 616.
• Concealable aura: At Sequence 4, Klein can suppress the enhancement leaking into reality, making it difficult for specially sensitive Beyonders to detect 986.
• Early detectability: Before this control develops, certain powerful Spirit World creatures, deities with suitable authorities, and Fate pathway Beyonders can perceive his connection at close range 729.

Protection and Purification

The space shields Klein from many harmful supernatural effects, but its protection is not uniformly absolute 140 1261.

• Divine backlash: Klein survives divining the source of divine blood, although he is badly burned and the palace and table are shattered before being restored 140.
• Possession resistance: Kavithua’s sea-serpent manifestation dissolves in the fog, ending the attempted possession transmitted through the bone sword 541.
• Blocking murmurs: The thin fog surrounding Klein after his Faceless advancement blocks ravings whose underlying power is not sufficiently strong 455 616.
• Removing hostile influences: Entering Sefirah Castle dissolves corruption, mutations, and invisible connections affecting his spirit body 1237.
• Purification limit: Corruption from the True Creator can persist in a stable form despite repeated dissolution 1261.
• Late defensive barrier: With greater control, Klein judges Sefirah Castle’s barrier unbreakable even by true gods; its resistance to Outer Deities remains uncertain 1373.

Sefirah Castle supports the movement, safekeeping, and supernatural use of objects 222 265.

• Sacrifice and bestowal: Physical materials and dangerous artifacts can be sent into the space and transferred to others through rituals 222 1089 1211.
• Storage: Klein leaves items such as the Eye of All-Black and Will Auceptin’s paper crane above the fog 265 595.
• Paper Angels: Paper figurines gather the space’s stirred power into enormous angel-shaped manifestations. The Black Emperor card helps Klein direct this power before his own status is sufficient 375 419.
• Charm creation: Klein channels the space’s power through a ritual to make the Fate Siphon charm from a dead Worm of Time 777.
• Characteristic suppression: The Curtain can be suppressed and gradually separated, although Klein initially lacks enough accessible power to shatter it outright 1261.

Historical and Pathway Authority

Sefirah Castle connects to the Seer, Apprentice, and Marauder pathways and draws corresponding Beyonders and artifacts through convergence 1003 1187.

• Historical access: Klein uses it to inspect distant historical fragments, including the cocooned people’s past 1183.
• Forced convergence: He combines Sefirah Castle, The Fool Card, and the Staff of the Stars to draw Zaratul out of an otherwise unlocated historical fragment 1367.
• Authority over historical powers: Greater control allows Klein to strengthen or weaken Seer abilities associated with the Fog of History 1373.
• Cross-pathway powers: At higher levels, he can draw on Marauder and Apprentice abilities, including Stealing The Fool’s Uniqueness from Antigonus 1373 1392.
