Background / History
Childhood and Academic Career
Kaynell’s mother died when he was young, leaving his farmer father to raise him alone. His father enrolled him in Mentor Anselon’s introductory magic class, but Kaynell frequently skipped lessons to play 38.
A powerful Silvermoon noble later offered to buy the family’s land. Kaynell’s father initially agreed, then refused after discovering that the buyer intended to cultivate the addictive, prohibited herb Bloodthistle. The nobles had him assassinated. Before dying, he urged Kaynell to climb society’s ranks, believing that only an important person could act freely 38.
By his first appearance, Kaynell had worked at Falthrien Academy for twenty-eight years. His teaching experience and newly earned fifth-circle certification secured an exceptional promotion to substitute associate professor of evocation. During a lecture, he angrily woke a sleeping attendee, only to discover that the supposed student was Councilor Aier Salona—Al 4.
Publicity and Reassignment
Terrified that he had offended Al, Kaynell spread publicity for Al’s upcoming lecture in hopes of securing forgiveness, a promotion, and higher pay. The resulting rumors credited Al with increasingly extravagant accomplishments, including miraculous infertility treatments 4.
At the lecture, Kaynell volunteered to test Ayou leather with Flamestrike. Al extinguished the fire and left the platform unscorched, a result Kaynell initially refused to believe 8.
Kaynell subsequently worked as a junior editor at Magic Monthly. His exaggerated praise infuriated Al; one article inflated a few assassination attempts against Al into thirty-six. Al personally assigned him to raise pigs at Ayou Farm, despite Headmistress Faselyn’s inability to prevent the reassignment 9 38.
Ayou Farm and John
Kaynell initially resented farm work and looked down on the former farmer John. Their relationship changed when John offered him a meal without mockery or ulterior motives. The gesture moved Kaynell to tears, and the two eventually became close enough to discuss their families and losses 38.
John revealed that nobles had caused his wife Hannah’s death. He had joined Ayou Farm after reading Kaynell’s embellished account of Al surviving assassination attempts while continuing a project that benefited ordinary people. Realizing that his self-serving journalism had genuinely sustained John left Kaynell ashamed 38.
Five months after their friendship developed, John was killed by nobles’ assassins. He had challenged a noble’s steward over land sought for Bloodthistle cultivation; although Ayou Farm secured the lease, John became the target of retaliation. Kaynell attended his funeral and demanded the truth from the farm supervisor, but postponed revenge because he lacked sufficient strength 38.
After roughly a year at the farm, Kaynell learned that Al was heading to Dalaran. He left all his savings to John’s daughter Katie and departed to seek Al as his mentor 38.
Joining Al’s Team
In Dalaran, Kaynell encountered Nielas Aran at the wishing fountain and teased him about his romantic wish and use of a copper coin. Both learned of the Twin Cities Magic Championship from a public notice, prompting Kaynell to seek Al 45.
Rommath’s supporters repeatedly threw Kaynell out of the Silvermoon Embassy, beating him and mocking his low birth and farm work while Rommath watched with amusement. Al later found him injured and weeping in the street. Kaynell apologized for his past behavior and abandoned his request to join the team, but Al welcomed him aboard regardless 46.
Twin Cities Magic Championship
Kaynell entered the 2v2 competition alongside Quinnthas of the Sunwing family against Arfus Alphamale and Xylem. Rommath arranged for him to be introduced as “Swineherd,” provoking jeers from the audience. Quinnthas dismissed Kaynell’s usefulness, then died when Arfus counterattacked his opening Pyroblast 48.
Left alone, Kaynell killed Arfus through deception: a mirror image drew the dwarf’s Flamestrike while Kaynell approached under Greater Invisibility and struck with a flame blade. Already exhausted, he then faced Xylem, who brutally beat him and attacked with frost magic 48 49.
Kaynell survived Ice Storm using a Limited Invincible Belt 2.0 while secretly placing Combustion in the core circuit of Xylem’s robe. He endured repeated Ice Lances, cast Scorch thirty-seven times, and interrupted Xylem’s Evocation with Counterspell. The resulting Combustion burned Xylem to ash, winning the match 49.
Kaynell collapsed after dedicating his victory to Al. He awoke during the one-day tournament break with broken limbs in casts and a stitched chest wound. Al ordered him to rest, arranged for a priest to be brought from the nearest church, and praised him as a brave warrior needed by their cause 49 50.
Appearance
- Described as somewhat handsome 38.
- Wears a wand at his waist when demonstrating Flamestrike 8.
- Uses protective clothing and a hard hat while working at Ayou Farm 38.
- After the tournament, has swollen, bloodshot eyelids, bandaged wounds, and broken limbs in casts 50.
Personality
Early Kaynell is status-conscious, opportunistic, and quick to flatter powerful people. He switches immediately from anger to fawning deference upon learning Al’s identity, and promotes Al’s lecture primarily to protect his own prospects. His initial contempt for John likewise reflects his belief that being a mage places him above ordinary laborers 4 38.
John’s kindness and death force him to reconsider those values. Kaynell comes to recognize dignity and courage in someone he once dismissed, feels shame over his dishonest journalism, and gives his savings to Katie before leaving the farm 38.
His transformation does not erase his vanity or teasing manner: in Dalaran, he disparages human architecture and persistently needles Nielas Aran. His loyalty to Al, however, becomes sincere. In the arena, he continues fighting through crippling injuries and public hostility, eventually winning the sympathy of spectators who had mocked him 45 48 49.
Abilities & Skills
Fire Magic
Kaynell specializes in fire magic and is capable of fifth-circle war spells 8.
- Flamestrike: Engulfs a platform in fire during Al’s leather-resistance demonstration 8.
- Fireball, Fire Blast, and Living Bomb: Used in his exchange with Arfus 48.
- Flame blade: Forms a magical blade for close-range attacks 48.
- Scorch: Repeatedly casts this comparatively weak spell to build Combustion’s final burst 49.
Combustion
His newly invented fifth-circle metamagic increases its burst damage by 10% for each damaging fire spell cast after activation 49.
- Places the spell directly in the central magical circuit of Xylem’s robe rather than trying to overpower its surface defenses 49.
- Conceals its application during the mist produced by Xylem’s Ice Storm 49.
- Builds a 370% Combustion through thirty-seven Scorch casts, defeating a robe that blocks ordinary spells below the sixth circle 49.
Arcane Utility and Deception
Kaynell supplements his fire specialization with concealment, movement, and utility spells.
- Mage Hand: Controls chalk while teaching 4.
- Eagle Eye: Reads a distant tournament notice through a crowd 45.
- Greater Invisibility and mirror image: Conceals his approach while a decoy draws Arfus’s attack 48.
- Blink: Repositions behind wooden crates during combat 48.
- Counterspell: Interrupts Xylem’s Evocation, preventing him from substantially replenishing his mana 49.
- Amplification: Makes his laughter and final dedication audible throughout the arena 49.
Defensive Magic
- Molten Armor: The first fifth-circle spell he inscribed after becoming a high-ranking mage 48.
- Fire Ward and Frost Ward: Casts both before engaging Arfus 48.
- Combat endurance: Continues casting despite broken limbs, extensive wounds, and a nearly depleted mana pool; afterward requires medical treatment 49 50.
