Background / History

Hunting Party and Recruitment

Hemet was a hunter from Ironforge whose ambition was to become a master hunter. Ten months before meeting Al, a noble in Stormwind commissioned his party to hunt Mosh in Un’Goro Crater. The employer’s information understated the danger: Hemet described Mosh as a monster comparable to an epic Warrior. The beast killed his companions, leaving him the sole survivor 13 19.

Al encountered Hemet trapped in mud with another Devilsaur closing in. Hemet fired his gun as Al killed the creature with a single punch. After hearing about the lost hunting party, Al offered him revenge and a path toward becoming a master hunter. Hemet accepted employment—and immediately received the task of carrying the Devilsaur’s head 13.

Marshal’s Refuge

Hemet guided Al through Un’Goro Crater to Marshal’s Refuge, where he knew Williden Marshal. Along the way, he carried Al’s growing collection of creatures and specimens. Even an enslaved stegosaurus failed to solve the transport problem: it died under the load, becoming another specimen for Hemet to carry 14.

At the refuge, Hemet furnished Al’s newly constructed house and helped establish the Sarona Bio-Alchemy Workshop—Marshal Branch. When Al fell asleep after researching Bloodpetals, Hemet covered him with his cloak, put up the workshop sign, and opened for business 15.

He subsequently handled Jinkela orders and crowd control. Al’s first public demonstration triggered a buying frenzy that left Hemet bruised, missing tufts of beard, and carrying a towering stack of orders 16 18.

Tracking Mosh and Exploring Titan Sites

After escaping Holly Marshall’s pursuit with Al, Hemet recognized Mosh’s enormous footprint in a swamp. His account of the massacre included a crucial detail: Mosh had stopped to eat a stone emitting multicolored light. This gave Al a lead connecting the beast’s condition to the prismatic gems 18 19.

Their search led to a cave guarded by a stone construct. Believing its attack had killed Al, Hemet fired repeatedly at the guardian, but could not damage it. Al recovered through Alter Time, destroyed the construct, and led Hemet into the Titan Species Testing Grounds 20 21.

Hemet later encouraged Al to honor Nablya’s hopes by becoming strong enough to protect the world. At Fire Plume Ridge, however, the heat forced him to remain behind. Convinced that Al was still battling powerful creatures, he trained to exhaustion and raised his daily push-up target to 3,000 23 27.

Revenge, Death, and Resurrection

When Al returned, Hemet apologized for being unable to help him. He accepted an untested infusion of divine earth power despite the danger, motivated by his companions’ deaths and his repeated helplessness. The procedure awakened his earthen heritage and enabled Avatar 30.

Hemet then insisted on fighting Mosh alone. He repeatedly charged the beast despite severe fractures and Al’s pleas to stop. After awakening Dragon Roar, he used Heroic Leap and Thunder Clap to crush Mosh’s skull. He died shortly afterward while Al attempted to save him 31.

Al continued pouring divine earth power into Hemet until the dwarf revived, nearly exhausting his reserves. Hemet then carried Mosh’s enormous corpse back to Marshal’s Refuge 32.

Type Zero and Dalaran

Hemet forged components while Al rebuilt Mosh into Battlecast Behemoth—Type Zero. He proudly announced the machine’s name and claimed that he and Al had developed it together. During a test, his enthusiastic handling of the controls sent it flying out of control; Al prevented a catastrophic impact, though the falling machine still damaged the refuge 33 34.

Before the Dalaran symposium, Hemet spent five sleepless days collecting research materials. He accompanied Al through Southshore and into Dalaran, repeatedly trading insults with Kael’thas. On the road, Al made him carry the approximately hundred-ton Type Zero 37 39 40.

During the tournament arc, Hemet defended Kaynell when Rommath dismissed the mage’s performance as luck. His enlarged stone arm frightened Rommath by recalling a Mountain King who had saved the archmage from a black dragon a thousand years earlier 50.

Appearance

  • Normal form: A short, stocky, middle-aged dwarf, barely over a meter tall, with a ruddy face, a magnificent black beard, and a monocle over his left eye 13 32.
  • Hair: Initially has thick black hair. Being dragged headfirst through a low-altitude flight leaves his crown bald; dark stubble later begins growing back 13 18 27.
  • Clothing: Wears hunting leathers and a trench coat. His first Avatar transformation tears apart his armor, prompting Al to lend him a linen sleeping robe 20 30.
  • Avatar form: Becomes a giant with pale-gray stone skin and muscles resembling sculpted marble. Initially stands seven or eight meters tall and grows larger during the battle with Mosh 30 31.

Personality

Hemet is proud of his hunting career and physical strength, but his failure to save his companions leaves him deeply traumatized. He suffers nightmares about their deaths and calls himself a coward. His determination to avenge them ultimately leads him to refuse Al’s intervention even when continuing the fight threatens his life 13 19 31.

He is devoted to Al and distressed whenever he cannot contribute. This loyalty appears in small acts, such as covering the sleeping Al with his cloak, and in punishing efforts such as training to exhaustion while waiting at Fire Plume Ridge. Al’s recognition of him as a friend moves him to tears 15 18 27.

Hemet also enjoys boasting and provoking others. He revels in the attention surrounding Type Zero and trades crude insults with Kael’thas. His confidence can become recklessness, most visibly when he loses control of the mech during its test flight 33 34 39 50.

Abilities & Skills

Hunting and Tracking

  • Recognizes Mosh’s footprints immediately and judges the freshness of tracks by examining and smelling disturbed soil 18 19.
  • Guides Al through Un’Goro Crater to Marshal’s Refuge using his experience as a veteran hunter 14.
  • Keeps hunter notes covering traps, aspects, and beast taming; Al consults them while devising a way to control a large dinosaur 14.
  • Uses a double-barreled hunting gun, though its shots prove ineffective against the stone guardian 13 20.

Avatar and Earthen Heritage

  • Al’s infusion awakens divine earth power already faintly present through Hemet’s earthen ancestry 30.
  • Avatar greatly enlarges his body, hardens his skin into stone, and increases his strength. During the Mosh battle, he grows until he matches the beast’s height 30 31.
  • He can end the transformation voluntarily and later demonstrates localized transformation of a single arm 30 50.
  • The form is not cost-free: he pants after first reverting, and Mosh’s attacks fracture his transformed body badly enough to kill him 30 31.
  • Al explains that Avatar requires sufficiently pure divine earth power, not royal descent 30.

Warrior Techniques

Technique Demonstrated use
Dragon Roar Awakens near death; manifests with circling stones and the phantom of a black dragon’s head, allowing Hemet to renew his attack 31.
Heroic Leap Used during the final assault on Mosh 31.
Thunder Clap Combined with Heroic Leap to crush Mosh’s skull 31.

Strength and Craftsmanship

  • Carries a huge stack of specimens even before his awakening, although the load eventually overwhelms him 14.
  • After awakening, transports Mosh’s corpse in his normal-sized body and later carries Type Zero along the road to Dalaran 32 40.
  • Forges components for Type Zero during its construction 33.
