Background / History

Tang Lie is the younger brother of Tang Yang, the Clear Sky Sect’s late Sixth Elder. During Spirit Hall’s assault on the sect, Tang Lie lost his son Tang Yi and daughter-in-law Yang Jin. Tang Yang and Tang Jian’s parents also died. Afterward, Tang Lie raised both his only grandson, Tang Feng, and his brother’s grandson, Tang Jian, in the sect’s secluded ancestral grounds 1.

The three shared a modest stone house with separate sleeping chambers. Tang Lie supervised the boys’ cultivation, supplied Tang Feng with the sect’s Advanced Meditation Method, and required them to master thirty-six uninterrupted Disorder Splitting Wind Hammer strikes before learning advanced methods 1 3.

His later title, Blazing Sun Douluo, commemorates Tang Yang and fulfills the ambition his elder brother never lived to achieve 59.

Appearance

  • Build: Burly, with large, callused hands 155 187.
  • Hair: Initially has scattered white hairs at his temples; these turn black as his cultivation improves, making him appear more than a decade younger 62.
  • Beard: Retains a white beard, described fluttering when he laughs 77.
  • Martial Soul manifestation: His Clear Sky Hammer is initially described as matching Tang Feng’s dark-gold hammer with crimson patterns. In later combat, it appears dark red and wreathed in baleful energy 3 155.

Personality

Tang Lie is renowned for his fiery temper, particularly when his family is threatened. Learning that ten-year-old Tang Feng has disappeared after a Spirit Hall ambush drives him to tears and an attempted departure from the mountain, despite the danger to himself and the sect. Tang Xiao and Tang Zhen have to restrain him 20.

As an instructor, he values discipline without recklessness. He warns the boys against both laziness and rushing their cultivation, and personally examines Tang Feng for hidden damage after learning that he absorbed a nearly six-hundred-year first Soul Ring 3 11.

His anger does not entirely override his judgment. He accepts Tang Feng’s warning against underestimating Spirit Hall and acknowledges that the sect wronged the Four Great Single-Attribute Clans. Although deeply resentful of Tang Hao, he supports Tang Feng’s negotiations and later maintains that shared blood prevents him from simply ignoring Tang Hao’s possible death 63 78 159.

In private, he is affectionate and playful. He enjoys Chinese chess with Tang Feng, enthusiastically supports Tang Jian’s marriage alliance, and welcomes Zhu Zhuqing into the family with blunt promises of protection 77 100 105 185.

Abilities & Skills

Clear Sky Hammer

Tang Lie specializes in overwhelming force supported by precise hammer techniques and battlefield control.

  • His hammer weighs sixteen thousand jin at Level 96 107.
  • His first and fourth Soul Rings provide enhancements, though their skill names are not supplied 262.
  • He can spend blood essence to force out greater power; against the King of Slaughter, he consumes thirty percent to strengthen a Collapse Formula attack 108.

Disorder Splitting Wind Hammer

A foundational Clear Sky Sect inheritance that builds force through successive hammer strikes.

  • Tang Lie teaches Tang Feng and Tang Jian to practice it using their own Martial Souls 3.
  • He requires thirty-six uninterrupted strikes before teaching subsequent methods 3.
  • The technique remains usable in Slaughter City despite the suppression of Soul Skills 94.

Clear Sky Nine Absolutes

Tang Lie describes the Nine Absolutes as the pinnacle of the sect’s hammer technique, combining methods of exerting force, circulating Soul Power, and changing footwork 63.

Formula Documented use
Collapse Channels spiraling, mountain-crushing force. Tang Lie uses it to subdue the Heaven-Burning Demonic Ape and injure Azure Luan Douluo 63 68 155.
Break Concentrates force into a narrow point to penetrate defenses and damage internal organs; at full mastery, can pierce a Titled Douluo’s protective Qi 63.
Shock Uses recoil and changing momentum for defense; also shatters incoming wind blades 63 155.
Slaughter Forms a rounded defensive force field that disperses and refracts Azure Luan Douluo’s sonic attack 155.
Pierce Disrupts Azure Luan Douluo’s Wind Wing Assault 155.
  • Begins Tang Feng’s instruction with Collapse, Break, and Shock, assigning one thousand repetitions daily and a test after ten days 63.
  • Combines the formulas with his avatar, domain, and control abilities rather than relying on brute strength alone 155.

Divine Slaughter’s Domain

A domain obtained through the Slaughter City and Hell Road trials.

  • Initially weakens opponents by ten percent while increasing his own strength by ten percent 100.
  • Supplies baleful energy that supports his defensive techniques and helps resist sonic interference 155.
  • Suppresses opponents during combat, including Azure Luan Douluo and Tang Hao 156 203.
  • Its uncontrolled killing aura initially forces Tang Lie and Tang Feng to avoid populated areas and cultivate near the Far North 100.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Tang Feng’s Return and the Sect’s Recovery

When Tang Feng returns after five years away, he brings the captured Xiao Wu as a prospective ninth Soul Ring for Tang Lie. Tang Lie initially wants his grandson to keep the opportunity, but accepts after Tang Feng and the sect leaders argue that strengthening the sect is more urgent. He subsequently gives Xiao Wu’s left leg bone to Tang Feng 59.

He then becomes Tang Feng’s advanced hammer instructor and accompanies him on Soul Ring hunts. After reaching Super Douluo, he joins the mission to reunite the Four Great Single-Attribute Clans. His public display of strength confirms Tang Feng’s claims about the sect’s recovery 63 68 72 81.

Slaughter City and Tang Chen

Tang Lie and Tang Feng alternate arena matches and guard one another during recovery, reducing their exposure to ambushes. Both refuse the King of Slaughter’s offer of guest-elder positions in favor of facing Hell Road 96 97.

After obtaining Divine Slaughter’s Domain, they spend almost four months living near the Far North to control their killing aura. During a subsequent confrontation with the King of Slaughter, they coordinate attacks that force the Blood-Red Nine-Headed Bat King from his host. Tang Lie recognizes the freed man as Tang Chen and carries him ashore 100 105 108 109.

Battles Against Spirit Hall

Tang Lie gains the upper hand against the Level 97 Azure Luan Douluo through domain suppression, gravity control, and explosive attacks. He does not pursue a fight to the death, recognizing that the veteran opponent could resort to mutual destruction 155 156.

He later rescues Tang Feng from Qian Renxue, Snake Lance Douluo, and Porcupinefish Douluo, prioritizing his grandson’s safety over pursuit. During Spirit Hall’s Soul Hunting Operation, he leads three hundred Clear Sky Sect elites into the attackers’ flank and rear at Seven Treasure City and engages Mad Lion Douluo 171 211.

Later Cultivation and Jialing Pass

Tang Lie helps battle the Qian Jun Ant Emperors and subsequently reaches Level 97. When Tang Hao challenges him at the sect, his superior domain and hundred-thousand-year Soul Ring overwhelm Tang Hao’s resistance without a prolonged duel 193 201 203.

He later fights the Deep Sea Demonic Whale King with Yang Wudi, though the beast suppresses both despite their enhancements. By the announcement of Zhu Zhuqing’s pregnancy, Tang Lie has genuinely reached Level 98 262 276.

At Jialing Pass, Tang Lie and Dugu Yan begin suppressing Bibi Dong together. Qian Daoliu’s arrival reverses the situation: Tang Lie suffers injuries despite repeated Ring Detonation, until Tang Feng intervenes and forces Qian Daoliu back 281.
