Han Youwei, Class Two's Pride
Han Youwei walked to the front of her class's line, holding her textbooks.
When the student beside her saw her approach, they voluntarily stepped back one place.
Han Youwei hurriedly waved her hand. "I'm not trying to cut in line. I'm just standing here for a bit. You go ahead with the tests. I'll go to the back."
Fang Yuan turned around and smiled. "Actually, slipping in wouldn't hurt. They wouldn't mind anyway."
The students around them all stifled their laughter.
The tips of Han Youwei's ears reddened. Forcing herself to pretend she hadn't understood, she waved in greeting. "Did you have a good summer?"
"Not bad," Fang Yuan replied casually.
"You'll have to choose between the academic and martial tracks for the college entrance exam soon. Have you decided?" Han Youwei asked again.
"I'll see after the test. If the ability I awaken isn't particularly outstanding, I'll probably choose the academic track." Fang Yuan had actually already considered the choice between the academic and martial tracks.
"That makes sense. Your academic grades are so good, you're sure to get into a prestigious university through the academic track." Although Han Youwei said that, there was a barely perceptible trace of disappointment in her voice.
Fang Yuan was considering the academic track not because he didn't want to pursue martial arts, but because that path required far too many resources.
The academic track in the current college entrance exam referred to academic subjects. Though called the liberal arts track for short, it actually included both the humanities and the sciences.
Fang Yuan wanted to take the science exams within the academic track, not because he liked the sciences, but because he needed money. He needed it very, very badly.
The most popular university majors at present were those related to star power technology.
Anyone admitted to a star power technology program at a prestigious university could receive a very substantial, steady income.
On the very first day of enrollment, major companies and conglomerates would come to campus to sponsor tuition and living expenses.
If students had promising research projects during their studies, star power technology companies would even sponsor their research funding.
That was because star power technology companies around the world were currently short of research talent. Very, very short.
At present, this was the way Fang Yuan could think of to get money quickly without compromising his studies.
By contrast, if he took the martial exams, he would need far too many resources down the road, and it would be difficult to earn money in the short term.
There was another reason Fang Yuan wasn't taking the martial exams: his martial grades were very average.
The star power tests each semester also showed that his potential for martial development was below average.
If he took the martial exams, he would most likely fail to get into a prestigious university. His chances with the science exams were much better.
In all honesty.
If external factors weren't a consideration and Fang Yuan had to choose between the academic and martial tracks, he would definitely choose the martial track.
Who didn't harbor a dream of the stars and the sea?
The problem was that reality wouldn't allow it.
Fang Yuan had thought it through clearly. He would take the science exams. As long as he got into a prestigious university's star power technology program, joined a Fortune Global 500 company after graduation, and earned money, he could still study martial arts afterward.
That was better than insisting on the martial track, attending an ordinary university, consuming vast resources, dragging his family down, and ultimately achieving nothing.
At half past two, the bell rang for afternoon classes.
Riiing...
Their homeroom teacher, Guo Songtao, walked into the auditorium and beckoned to the line for Year Three, Class Two. "We're starting the tests. Han Youwei, you go first."
Han Youwei hurriedly explained, "Sir, I arrived late. I'm at the back of the line."
"It's fine. You go first. Get our class off to a good start." As their homeroom teacher, Guo Songtao naturally wanted his class to start with a win.
And Han Youwei was famous for her star power talent. She also came from a star martial family, so her star power level wouldn't be low either.
"Go on. Let us bask in some of your luck."
All the boys in the class began egging her on.
Just then, a sudden commotion came from Class One next to them.
"Whoa! Isn't that superpower trait way too strong?"
"Awesome, bro!"
Everyone in Class Two heard the commotion from Class One next to them.
A Class Two student asked in puzzlement, "What's going on with the class next door? Why are they so loud?"
A student who had just returned from watching the excitement explained, "Do you even need to ask? That young master from the prestigious star martial family in Class One had his superpower trait tested and stunned everyone."
"Was it Li Weilian? What superpower did he awaken?" another student pressed.
"Elemental type, fire, star power level Lv.2. The brightness of those flames practically blinded everyone in Class One just now. I heard their homeroom teacher say Li Weilian's fire ability had A-grade potential."
"Is A-grade potential really that impressive?"
"Donghai No. 1 High School only produces about one or two A-grades a year. You tell me."
"Then that's pretty damn impressive."
Class One next to them had already produced an awakener with A-grade potential.
As Class Two's homeroom teacher, Guo Songtao naturally didn't want to fall behind either. He beckoned to Han Youwei. "Come on. Class Two can't lose to Class One. We're counting on you."
Seeing her homeroom teacher insist, Han Youwei could only walk over to the testing machine and stand with her back against the testing pillar.
Guo Songtao switched on the star power testing equipment. "Place both hands on the scanning screen and release as much star power as you can."
Han Youwei followed his instructions, pressing both hands against the scanning screen and releasing her star power.
A moment later, the test results appeared on the computer beside the machine.
A group of students crowded around to look. Han Youwei's various attributes appeared on the computer screen.
Name: Han Youwei Star power level: Lv.2 Attributes: strength 13, agility 18, constitution 13, spirit 17 Superpower trait: Star Power Condensation Star slot trait: Static Electricity Control Skills: Soft Force Lv.1, Whip Kick Lv.2, Throwing Combat Lv.2
The instant Guo Songtao saw Han Youwei's test results, he brightened.
A boy hurriedly asked, "Sir, what grade is Han Youwei's potential?"
"A-grade. A+ at that! Make some noise! Make some noise!" Guo Songtao gestured upward with his hands.
The Class Two students immediately caught on and cheered loudly, creating an even bigger commotion than Class One had earlier.
It drew several Class One students over to find out what was happening.
After the cheering, a boy pointed to "star slot trait" on the character attribute panel and asked, "Sir, what's this star slot trait?"
"It's an additional superpower trait. It doesn't come with awakening; it's acquired afterward through absorption, usually from the star core of a high-tier star beast," Guo Songtao explained.
"Are high-tier star beast cores expensive?" the boy asked again.
"Not too bad. One high-tier star beast core could pay to build about half of Donghai No. 1 High School," Guo Songtao said as an example.
The whole class gaped, marveling inwardly, How is that a superpower? That's clearly the power of money!
The star power testing continued.
The students went up for testing one by one in the order they had lined up.
Apart from Han Youwei, whose star power level had reached Lv.2, most of the remaining students were Lv.1.
Of course, that didn't mean most students in the school had a star power level of Lv.1.
Only Class One and Class Two had an average star power level of Lv.1, because they were the advanced classes for awakeners.
Donghai No. 1 High School had sixteen classes in its third year. Apart from Class One and Class Two, most students in the other classes had a star power level of Lv.0, or even no detectable star power.
The school recommended that students who tested at star power level Lv.0 and had little potential choose the humanities or science exams.
An hour into the testing, it was Fang Yuan's turn.
Since other students had already been tested before him, Fang Yuan walked up to the testing equipment with practiced ease, stood with his back against the testing pillar, and pressed both hands against the testing screen.
He turned his head to watch the computer screen beside him, waiting for the test results.
