History
Military upbringing and succession
Mo Beiyuan inherited a military household whose princes commanded the 500,000-strong Black Flame Army. His father, the previous prince, was undefeated in battle before Beilin Kingdom used schemes to kill him. By seven, Mo Beiyuan had mastered the military treatises of every school. At fifteen, he led 5,000 Black Flame soldiers against 30,000 Beilin invaders and annihilated the enemy force, establishing his reputation in a single battle 6.
After succeeding his father, he stopped Beilin’s army at the border and eliminated the remaining enemy soldiers within Southern Mo in one night. News of his victory allowed the inhabitants of Red Star Village to abandon their plans to flee 6.
Conflict with the emperor
Mo Beiyuan and Emperor Mo Sinian were first cousins who had once been as close as brothers. Their relationship deteriorated after Mo Beiyuan’s father died: the emperor repeatedly attempted to seize his military authority and even drugged him in an effort to steal his military tally 46.
When the emperor dispatched 500 Imperial Shadow Guards to investigate newborn twins associated with an ominous celestial prediction, Han Yu proposed rescuing the threatened families. Mo Beiyuan declined to intervene, reasoning that, if the prediction was genuine, the emperor could not overcome heaven’s mandate 43.
The missing Wang residence valuables
While staying at a secluded residence in Wuliang County, Mo Beiyuan learned that someone calling themselves “Dad” had emptied the Wang residence and poisoned Master Wang into madness. An unspecified object his people sought had disappeared with the stolen goods. He ordered the hidden guards to undergo retraining at Extreme Punishment Cliff, assigned the investigation to the shadow guards, and demanded thorough interrogation of the captives. Despite an extensive search, his forces recovered nothing 29.
Shared pregnancy symptoms
While planning an attack on Beilin, Mo Beiyuan abruptly suffered severe abdominal pain matching Yun Manman’s pain elsewhere. An army physician found neither illness nor poisoning. He subsequently developed persistent nausea triggered first by meat and fish, then even by noodles and porridge. Neither the army physician nor Luo Fan could explain the condition, although Luo Fan recognized its resemblance to pregnancy symptoms 36 38.
As Yun Manman went into painless labor, Mo Beiyuan endured increasingly severe contractions and eventually lost consciousness. He awoke drenched in sweat, with bloodied palms, and privately recalled visions of a violet-eyed woman. Watching the “Twin Stars Accompanying the Moon” phenomenon afterward, he remembered a similar scene and the sensation of sharing the girl’s pain 39 40 41.
Interest in the mysterious woman and Nine Lotus Pavilion
Mo Beiyuan arrived at Longevity Stronghold after Yun Manman’s group had defeated its 208 bandits without killing any of them. When County Magistrate Yang objected to the woman taking the stronghold’s treasure, Mo Beiyuan defended her entitlement to it: she had delivered the captives without costing the government a single soldier. He then ordered an investigation into her identity, impressed by her martial arts and her use of bandits as training opponents, but there were no useful clues 45 46.
Four years later, he advised Han Yu not to antagonize the increasingly powerful Nine Lotus Pavilion. He approved of its practice of killing deserving targets and protecting those who needed protection, and recommended establishing friendly relations rather than competing beyond Ten Cold Gate’s capabilities. He also dismissed the emperor’s chances of persuading its female master to help seize his military authority 46.
Reunion with Yun Manman and his sons
Yun Rui encountered Mo Beiyuan at a bookshop and followed him home because their faces were nearly identical. Initially treating the follower as a potential threat, Mo Beiyuan recognized the child’s violet eyes and his connection to the woman who had appeared in his dreams. After subduing Yun Rui by sealing his acupoints, he realized the boy was his son, embraced him, and apologized for arriving too late 48 49.
Yun Manman forced her way into the residence to retrieve Yun Rui and fought Mo Beiyuan through dozens of exchanges. He recognized her as the woman he had dreamed of for five years and had never stopped searching for. When she tried to leave, he adopted an aggrieved manner, accusing her of forcing herself on him during their earlier encounter, disappearing afterward, and concealing their child. She remained protective of Yun Rui and threatened to kill him if he targeted the boy 49.
Mo Beiyuan then asked only to spend time with the children and fulfill his responsibilities. On learning that Yun Rui had a twin brother, Yun Xiao, he thanked Yun Manman. She permitted visits but expressly forbade him from taking the children away. He accompanied her and Yun Rui toward Red Star Village; when they sensed danger ahead, he entrusted Yun Rui to Qing Yi and followed Yun Manman toward the attack 50.
Appearance
- Build and bearing: Tall, lean, and powerful, with a heroic appearance and an imposing, naturally authoritative presence 29 40 45 49.
- Eyes: Deep lake-blue eyes; Yun Xiao shares their color 29 48.
- Hair: Long, ink-black hair, worn tied high with a warm white jade crown during sword practice 29.
- Facial features: Swordlike brows; Yun Rui’s face closely resembles his own 48 49.
- Clothing: Fitted white martial attire or moon-white robes, including a belt patterned with four-clawed dragons 29 49.
Personality
Mo Beiyuan is usually restrained, commanding, and severe. He maintains a calm expression even when angered, imposes harsh retraining on guards who fail their duties, and orders suspected followers dealt with decisively. His reputation as the “God of Slaughter” contrasts sharply with his later behavior around his family 29 48 50.
He respects demonstrable competence. He defends the unidentified woman’s right to the bandits’ treasure, recognizes the sophistication of her martial arts, and urges Han Yu to improve his own organization rather than provoke a superior rival 45 46.
Discovering his son exposes an unusually emotional side: his hands tremble, his eyes fill with tears, and he addresses Yun Rui affectionately as “baby,” astonishing his guards. With Yun Manman, he shifts from confrontation to deliberately aggrieved appeals, then restrains himself when he realizes that pressing too quickly will deepen her distrust 49 50.
