Background / History

Previous Life and Transmigration

Yun Manman originally led the Yun family, an ancient martial arts clan in the twenty-eighth century. While cultivating the Lotus Heart Art in seclusion, she was betrayed by clan elders and trusted followers. She subsequently awakens in the body of another Yun Manman, a village girl attacked by three hired men in the northwestern countryside. Unable to summon true qi, she nevertheless overpowers the attackers using lethal close-combat techniques 1.

The original girl had been quiet, timid, and unfamiliar with martial arts. Yun Manman later identifies the girl's grandfather, grandmother, and second uncle as the relatives who arranged to ruin her chastity. After escaping the attackers, she suffers an overwhelming heat, encounters a white-robed man in a cave, and becomes intimate with him before leaving. She resolves not to marry and to pursue the freedom denied to her previous life 1 2 5.

Becoming Part of the Yun Family

Returning to the village, Yun Manman protects Old Father Yun from Beilin soldiers, suffering a shoulder wound before killing the attackers. She openly tells him that she is not the daughter he previously knew and that the original Yun Manman cannot return. He accepts her as his daughter regardless, and she promises to protect his family 3 4.

She helps her parents sever ties with the abusive older Yun household, rescues her younger brothers from Master Shen and his wife, and uses memory-erasing pills to prevent the couple from remembering the Yun family. Hunting and selling game provide funds for clothing, food, books, and improved living conditions 6 8 9 21.

Her relatives repeatedly attempt to exploit the family's improving circumstances. When they sell her to Zhang Gouzi for ten taels, she forces him to surrender the contract, cuts a finger from Old Madam Yun and Yun Wang, and directs him to take Yun Wang's daughter as repayment instead. Later, she expels the older household from her housewarming feast. She also secretly acts against Old Woman Yun, whose subsequent death she regards as retribution for the original girl's suffering 15 35 36 39.

Building an Independent Household

After seeing Master Wang torture women, Yun Manman raids his estate, taking its wealth, grain, weapons, furnishings, and horses. During this period, she rescues Yuanwei and negotiates a one-year arrangement with the Ten Cold Gate: she will accept difficult missions, but kill only people guilty of unforgivable evils 24 25 27.

She subsequently feeds twenty-eight starving children and offers them food, shelter, and training in exchange for lifelong loyalty. After they agree, she gives them the surname Yun and names drawn from a twenty-eight-character poem. She promises to make them strong enough to establish a path that even imperial authority will hesitate to threaten 29 30 31.

Back in Red Star Village, she designs a four-courtyard residence and a separate compound for the children. Construction also provides a schoolroom and training ground. She begins cultivating fields under Old Father Yun's guidance, gathers oxen, and obtains wild potatoes for trial planting 33.

Pregnancy and Motherhood

Yun Manman does not initially connect her missing periods and changing figure to the cave encounter. A doctor eventually confirms that she is more than three months pregnant with twins. She tells her family that their father died saving her from Beilin soldiers, although he is actually Mo Beiyuan and remains alive 36 37.

Accepting the pregnancy, she ends her cooperation with the Ten Cold Gate and stops strenuous exercise while continuing the Lotus Heart Art and supervising her household. She gives birth without pain and names the elder twin Yun Rui and the younger Yun Xiao. After Guagua detects powerful resentment directed at the newborns, she restricts outsiders' access to them and appoints dedicated protectors 37 41 42.

After her postpartum confinement, she resumes intensive training for her followers. Her methods include controlled encounters with wolves and a raid on Longevity Stronghold, where captured bandits become live sparring opponents. Over the following four years, her space expands, her followers develop specialist skills, and her Nine Lotus Pavilion assists Magistrate Yang with cases 42 43 45 46 48.

Reunion with Mo Beiyuan

Four years later, Yun Manman confronts Mo Beiyuan after Yun Rui leaves to find him. Their fight lasts dozens of exchanges, with observers believing she may be gaining the upper hand. After confirming that Yun Rui is unharmed, she attempts to take him home 49.

She eventually permits Mo Beiyuan to visit both boys, but forbids him from taking them away. Rather than accepting a romantic reunion, she privately envisions an arrangement like divorced parents sharing responsibility while living separately. On their return to Red Star Village, she senses danger and flies toward an attack on the household, urging Yun Xiao to focus his heart into a lotus 50.

Appearance

  • Eyes: Pale purple after transmigration, replacing the original girl's black eyes. Their color is subtle under ordinary conditions but deepens when she uses the Heart-Devouring Lotus 1 2 4 17.
  • Distinguishing mark: A small mole at the corner of one eye, which Old Father Yun recognizes 4.
  • Complexion and bearing: Described with jade-like, translucent skin and an aloof, imposing presence 16.
  • Clothing: Initially wears plain hemp clothing; later appears in white dresses, fitted white martial outfits, and black clothing with a face covering for nighttime raids 4 22 24 36.
  • Male disguise: Uses men's clothing, cosmetics, and a lowered voice to appear as the refined “Young Master Man” during her dealings with Shopkeeper Chen 19 20.

Personality

Yun Manman values independence over marriage, clan obligations, or affairs of state. After transmigrating, she wants a life centered on farming, ordinary comforts, and the people she chooses to protect. Even after meeting Mo Beiyuan again, she insists that his relationship with their children does not give him control over her life 2 37 50.

She is calm and blunt, but initially unfamiliar with familial affection. Old Father Yun's willingness to protect her surprises her, and she often struggles to comfort others verbally. Instead, she expresses care through practical action: carrying her mother, buying food, rescuing her brothers, and providing training so her family can defend themselves 3 7 8 13 31.

Her protectiveness can be ruthless. She retaliates against abuse with mutilation, drugs, humiliation, and threats, and deliberately uses fear to discourage village gossip. Nevertheless, she rejects Guagua's suggestion that she simply kill people for resentment and limits her proposed assassination work to offenders she considers deserving of death 3 5 15 27.

As a teacher, she demands discipline without encouraging submission. She tells Tongtong not to kneel readily, urges the children to live boldly, and offers trust in exchange for loyalty. Her instruction emphasizes self-reliance, decisive action, and teamwork 13 27 30 31.
