Background / History

Sun Wukong was born from a magical stone on Flower-Fruit Mountain, with no father or mother. Patriarch Bodhi recognized him as a being born of Heaven and Earth, gave him the surname Sun, and named him Wukong according to the “Wu” generation of his disciples. 19

At Mount Fangcun, Wukong diligently pursued the Dao. Though his cultivation was initially shallow, he showed loyalty to Senior Brother Zhuo Yingfan by insisting on accompanying him partway home. During that journey, a red-scaled python swallowed and tortured Wukong for three days before Zhuang Yan rescued him. 20

Bodhi eventually expelled Wukong from the Cave of the Slanting Moon and Three Stars. Zhuang Yan took him to Danchi Ridge, where Wukong defeated Vanguard Hu, Chi Ling, and the Fire Spirit True Immortal in sparring matches. After Zhuang Yan repeatedly trapped his Somersault Cloud inside the Earthen Jar, Wukong acknowledged Zhuang Yan as his uncle. 29 30 31

As the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, Wukong disrupted the Queen Mother's Peach Banquet, consumed immortal brews and fruits, stole Golden Cores, and defied the Heavenly Court. He fought heavenly generals, protected his monkey subjects through hostage exchanges, and resisted Erlang Shen and the heavenly armies before Zhuang Yan captured him in the Earthen Jar. 39 41 45

Sentenced to the Eight Trigrams Furnace, Wukong instead tempered his body and refined the Fiery Eyes Golden Gaze. He broke free after forty-nine days, destroyed Tushita Palace, and attacked toward Lingxiao Hall. Tathagata ultimately subdued him beneath Five Finger Mountain for five hundred years. 46

After his release, Wukong became Tang Sanzang's eldest disciple and protector on the journey west. He repeatedly sought allies in Heaven, Spirit Platform Mountain, and elsewhere whenever Tang Sanzang or his fellow disciples faced threats beyond his immediate ability to overcome. 77 93 97 103 148

Sun Wukong is a monkey spirit with distinctive monkey fur and an immortal aura. He is commonly recognized as the Handsome Monkey King despite his nonhuman appearance. 251

He is also boastful, impulsive, and highly sensitive about being called “Bimawen.” He often answers insults with immediate violence, especially when drunk or provoked, though Tang Sanzang and Zhuang Yan can restrain or correct him. 107 272

Despite his unruliness, Wukong respects elders he recognizes as family or teachers. He treats Zhuang Yan as his uncle, remains attached to his former sect, and seeks guidance from Zhuang Yan even after becoming the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. 31 77 94 117
