Background and History

Shi Yan grew up in poverty. His mother died early, and his father fled after falling into debt, leaving him responsible for Xiao Ling. When creditors came to their home, he escaped with his sister. He sought to become a Soul Master so that he could repay the debt and protect her 11.

Feng Xiaotian encountered him in the Heavenly Wind Mountain Range, injured but still defending Xiao Ling from a Wind-Patterned Python. After helping him obtain his first Soul Ring, Feng Xiaotian observed how carefully he looked after his sister and invited both siblings to Godwind Academy. Shi Yan accepted only after confirming that Xiao Ling could accompany him 11.

His admission required an exception: Godwind Academy normally accepted students with Wind Attribute Martial Souls, while his bell had only faint wind patterns. Feng Xiaotian personally guaranteed him, took responsibility for his training, and secured permission for him to remain without occupying an official academy place 17. Objections persisted for years, particularly when Shi Yan outperformed senior students in internal assessments 14.

Shi Yan is quiet, dependable, and protective. His care for Xiao Ling is expressed through practical acts: giving her the best food, covering her with his outer garment at night, and carefully rebraiding her hair while she sleeps. Her safety is his first concern even after being repeatedly knocked down in battle 11 131.

He is deeply grateful to Feng Xiaotian, whom he calls “Brother Xiaotian,” and readily volunteers to take attacks head-on for the team 17. Although physically imposing, he can be socially awkward: after exchanging compliments with Zhong Yue, he becomes embarrassed and reddens at the ears 53.

His determination sometimes becomes impatience. Watching teammates reach level thirty drives him to attempt extra weighted exercises despite unstable breathing. He accepts Feng Lingtian’s correction, however, and recognizes that he must progress one step at a time 47. Joining Godwind’s Team

Shi Yan accepts Feng Xiaotian’s invitation to join the combined junior and intermediate academy team pursuing victory in the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament 17. Subsequent ring hunting, medicinal treatment, and paired training develop him into a reliable defender, though he initially struggles with falling behind his teammates’ cultivation pace 20 39 40 47.

Against Iron Wolf, he withstands the combined assault of Tie Feng and Tie Lei without allowing his barrier to break. The victory demonstrates the effectiveness of Godwind’s two-defender formation 53. He later joins the masked Nameless Team and helps close the defensive gap targeted by Iron Wing 57 58.

The One-Year Pact

After Godwind wins the Five Elements Exchange Tournament, Huyan Shan challenges Shi Yan’s eligibility because his bell shows no clear Wind Attribute. Yu Leiting also demands an explanation. Feng Xiaotian negotiates a one-year agreement: Shi Yan will prove himself against opponents from Elephant Armor Academy and Thunder Academy, leaving Godwind if he fails 74.

The challenge motivates him to volunteer as the first Soul Core test subject. His success raises him from level thirty-four to thirty-seven and transforms his Martial Soul into the Void Resonance Bell 101 102.

In the Elephant Armor match, he protects Godwind’s formation from impact and coordinates with Jiang Lin to attack weaknesses in the enemy’s Soul Power circulation. His repeated sonic disruption dismantles Huyan Li’s Diamond Shield and forces a concession, clearing the pact’s first hurdle 132 133.

He completes the promise against Thunder Academy by defeating three fighters before forcing Lei Dong out of bounds 150.

Bai Yu’s Mountain Trials

Shi Yan accompanies Bai Yu to Mountain-Venerating Village, telling her that he has no home to visit outside Godwind Academy. He follows her through the village’s mist barrier and stays in an empty room at her family home 213 214.

During her crevice trial, his bell’s toll reaches through the stone and pressure to restore her clarity. He then uses Bell Toll · Heart Protection to support her as she continues forward 218.

He later joins Bai Yu and Bai Rong in investigating a northern ruin for her First Trial. He identifies evidence of recent intruders, reasons that they abandoned the tablet after discovering its dependence on the platform, and tests its connection to Bai Yu. The three bring it back to the village for the priest to examine 220.
