Giving You a Shot

Gu Hansheng scooped me up in his arms and walked straight out of the warehouse.

"You won."

"What?"

For a moment, I couldn't react.

"Weren't you betting that I'd come? You won that bet."

After that, I lost consciousness completely.

The persistent high fever turned my world into a haze.

In my daze, I remembered many things from the past.

Back then, Gu Hansheng had still been my legal husband. His heart and eyes had been full of nothing but me. After I went out clubbing and came home hungover, he would bring me warm honey water.

And after I lost my temper and smashed things, he would quietly clean up the mess for me.

He knew all my likes and dislikes and accepted all my flaws.

Yet I had lost someone like him completely.

We could never go back, either.

My heart hurt as though it were being torn apart. I kept crying, choking and sobbing until I couldn't control myself.

Until a pair of cool lips pressed against my cheek.

Gently, he kissed away the tear tracks on my face.

In my daze, I opened my eyes. Gu Hansheng's sculpted face was inches from mine.

I cried even harder.

I hadn't expected Gu Hansheng to refuse to leave me alone even in my dreams.

"Get away, you bastard."

Although I resisted him with my words, I desperately craved the coolness of his body.

Gu Hansheng held me in his arms and pressed his face against my forehead, his voice low. "Your fever's too high. Looks like you need a shot..."

The next second, I knew what he meant by a shot.

And I finally woke from my dream.

"Gu Hansheng! You're an animal," I cursed.

But he had no intention of letting me go.

"Yu Han, you really don't listen."

"I'm not your damn dog. Why should I obey you?"

With the fever fueling me, I finally found some backbone.

As if punishing me, Gu Hansheng began to grow rough. My battered body couldn't take it at all, and I started crying again.

That flustered him a little, and he became much gentler.

He brushed back the loose strands beside my cheek and said quietly, "Do you know what that event you attended meant? It was a consort-selection banquet for a bunch of wealthy young heirs. Did you think that five million would be so easy to get?"

"My business is none of yours."

I was still seething. He actually had the nerve to bring up that five million!

Anger gradually crept over Gu Hansheng's face, too. "If it's none of my business, why did you send me your location? I should have left you there for the stray dogs to eat! Yu Han, you have no conscience!"

I bit down hard on his shoulder, even tasting blood. "Then leave me alone if you've got the guts. Without me, where else will you find someone who can take your animal lust like I can? You certainly couldn't bear to do this to Shen Nian!"

At the mention of Shen Nian, I distinctly felt his movements pause. Then he seized my chin. "Don't mention her, especially in bed."

Right!

His white moonlight was pure and clean. I wasn't worthy of saying her name.

Gu Hansheng kept at it for so long that I thought I would die, but unexpectedly, after sweating profusely, my fever really did break.

My lower back ached terribly, though, and I didn't wake until noon the next day.

Gu Hansheng hadn't left. He even had lunch with me.

"Yu Hui's been taken to the hospital. Your parents haven't been told," he said casually.

I finally relaxed a little. I knew Gu Hansheng wouldn't leave Yu Hui to fend for himself, but hearing him tell me in person still reassured me.

"Thank you." I meant it sincerely, but Gu Hansheng was clearly dissatisfied.

"That bald guy is a notorious thug in Haicheng. He's been working for a boss with a shady background. What exactly did Yu Hui do to get involved with those people?"

I really couldn't muster the courage to tell Gu Hansheng about my family's troubles again.

Although I had no right to speak of dignity now, I still didn't want my situation to look too ugly.

From the moment Gu Hansheng tossed the voting device to Shen Nian, I had known I was someone he could discard at any time. I couldn't indulge in too many fantasies about him.

I shook my head without saying anything and simply drank the plain rice porridge in front of me.

My reaction seemed to displease Gu Hansheng a little. He didn't ask anything else, merely telling me which hospital Yu Han was in before leaving for the office.

After eating, I stuffed a large handful of cold medicine into my mouth and forced myself to go to the hospital.

Yu Hui wasn't doing very well. His physical injuries could all heal with proper care, but his spirit was very much off.

The instant he saw me, Yu Hui's eyes reddened, and he quickly lowered his head.

The Yu Hui I remembered had been the young master of the Yu Group, a graceful young man brimming with confidence.

But now, there wasn't a trace of sharpness left in him, only inferiority and self-reproach. He looked utterly dejected.

I walked over and gently stroked his hair.

"Sis... I'm sorry..." Yu Hui choked up as soon as he spoke.

"You little brat, what's with all this mourning the spring and grieving the autumn? You're an adult, and you're still sniveling."

In the past, Yu Hui and I had always bickered.

I had always felt that our parents favored Yu Hui, so I had always been domineering at home and hadn't exactly been gentle with my younger brother.

But only after trouble struck our family did I truly realize.

The only people who could walk on beside you without abandoning you were family.

Seeing Yu Hui like this, my heart ached for him from deep within.

I handed Yu Hui the bank card An'an had given me. "For the next couple of days, look after things at home for now. There's four million on this card. See if you can use it to ease the pressure from the loans. I'll find a way to get the rest."
