An'an comforted me. "It's all right. Maybe your degree wasn't a match. Let's try sales. Anyone can do that job, whatever their major, as long as they're good with words."

Hearing her say that restored some of my confidence.

"An'an, you're my little sun! You always warm me up!"

That afternoon, I sent out another batch of résumés. I figured I could at least do sales.

I could just speak to customers the way salespeople had spoken to me when I went shopping.

Surely I wouldn't fail to land even a sales job?

I waited a day and still didn't hear anything.

The main thing was that I still didn't know why no one was inviting me for an interview. I checked my résumé again, but there was nothing wrong with it.

As I racked my brains, an email arrived from a luxury watch company, asking me to come in the next day for a sales interview.

I knew I couldn't be completely useless!

On the day of the interview, I found a business outfit. I'd bought it when I went shopping with An'an before. She'd insisted I buy one along with her, saying I might need it someday.

Luckily, I'd bought it then.

After putting it on, I tied my hair into a simple ponytail and headed to the interview.

I'd been to that watch company before. I'd even been a VIP member there.

Facing seven or eight interviewers, I was very nervous. After all, this was my first time being scrutinized by several people.

The process was simple. I answered a few questions about the company and how much I knew about the brand.

When I finished answering, I saw two of the interviewers nod as they looked at my résumé.

"Miss Yu Han, you used to be the Yu Family's heiress, correct? You were also one of our VIP customers, weren't you?"

A woman sitting at the far end stood up.

She looked familiar, but I couldn't quite place her.

The other interviewers looked a little puzzled too.

The woman smiled. "I suppose important people like you have short memories, Miss Yu. Once, because one of my subordinates was feeling unwell,

she didn't immediately pour you water when you entered the store, so you verbally abused her right there,

and filed a complaint with headquarters. Isn't that right?"

"I..." I did vaguely remember it, but it hadn't happened the way she said. That saleswoman had clearly assumed I couldn't afford anything and mocked me first.

Just as I was about to explain, an interviewer sitting in the middle spoke slowly. "Our brand's primary audience is women. Our company's mission is to celebrate women's kindness, independence, and self-respect. It appears you aren't a suitable fit for our brand, Miss Yu."

"We can't afford to employ an heiress like you. Please leave." A mocking smile hung on the woman's lips as she deliberately stressed the word "heiress."

I knew explaining would be useless now.

I simply stood up and smiled faintly. "If mocking customers for not being able to afford something counts as feeling unwell, then that subordinate of yours really should go to the hospital and have that nasty condition looked at."

With that, I left.

The bitter ache in my heart was unbearable. I knew I couldn't change anything.

I couldn't change the way people around me looked at me, or make them hire me.

Saying those words hadn't made me feel much better.

Nor had it salvaged even a shred of my dignity.

I just wanted to leave quickly, because if I came out even a second later, they might discover I was crying.

Tears were already falling uncontrollably. I kept my head down, terrified that the people beside me would notice I was crying.

As I walked out, I bumped into someone coming toward me.

"I'm... sorry..."

"Sister Yu Han?" Shen Nian called to me in a sweet voice.

Gu Hansheng was beside her. His gaze lingered on my face for two seconds before shifting to the résumé in my hand, and his expression darkened.

He was always like this when he saw me.

That was fair. He hadn't come home for days. Who would want to look at a woman who cared only about money and had once humiliated him in every possible way?

I wanted to leave, but Shen Nian caught hold of me. "Sister Yu Han, why are you crying?"

"It's-it's nothing. Something got in my eye just now, and I rubbed it a few times, so it's a little red."

I knew it was an obvious lie too.

"Are you looking for a job, Sister Yu Han?" Shen Nian glanced at the résumé in my hand.

"I've already found one." Feeling a little guilty, I glanced at Gu Hansheng.

He looked at me, his eyes icy.

Did he have to treat me like this?

"Brother Hansheng, haven't you been looking for an assistant lately?"

Gu Hansheng gave a faint scoff. "Not just anyone can be my assistant."

Shen Nian tightened her hold on Gu Hansheng's arm and pressed closer to him. "Why don't we ask Sister Yu Han to help me choose a watch design? I'm afraid the one I pick won't look nice."

"No, no. I have something else to do. I'll leave you to it."

"Sister Yu Han, just help me choose. I heard this brand released a new limited edition. I only mentioned it in passing, and Brother Hansheng insisted on buying it for me. It's over thirty million. I can't bear to let him spend that much money."

She'd only mentioned it in passing? And he was willing to spend over thirty million to make Shen Nian happy.

What about me? For fourteen million, I'd lived on tenterhooks, racked my brains, thrown away my self-respect, and fawned over him to please him, only to be humiliated by him like that.

"If you really can't bear it, don't buy it."

I knew I couldn't compare to Shen Nian. When I'd been humiliating him, Shen Nian had been the only one who cared about him.
