When Did You Two Get So Close?
But I couldn't help the bitter ache in my heart.
I felt I couldn't stay another second. My hand tightened involuntarily around my résumé. "I'll be going."
I hurried past Gu Hansheng.
I faintly heard Shen Nian say, "Brother Hansheng, your ex-wife doesn't seem to like me very much."
"Don't bother with her."
I returned to the villa and lay on the bed, my heart aching all the while.
Because of the interview, and because of Gu Hansheng and Shen Nian.
Gu Hansheng's icy eyes and the mocking look on his face kept surfacing in my mind.
After thinking for a while, I felt I couldn't keep wallowing in such negative emotions.
I sat up and opened my laptop.
It was fine. So what if Gu Hansheng didn't like me?
So what if I'd failed a job interview?
There would be other jobs.
I sent out another batch of résumés.
Besides needing to earn money, I also needed a job to distract me from Gu Hansheng.
Afraid my résumés would sink like stones into the sea, I went out as soon as I got up the next morning, planning to look around the job market.
Maybe I could find a job.
On the way, I received a call from a sales company I'd applied to the night before, asking me to interview for a customer service representative position.
I headed excitedly toward the interview location. When I arrived, there were lots of people at the entrance. At first, I didn't know what they were doing.
Only later did I realize they were all applicants waiting to be interviewed.
I'd thought there was hope, but with so many applicants, I probably didn't stand a chance.
With the thought that I should give it a try no matter what, I joined the back of the line.
I'd arrived relatively late, and there was only one applicant behind me.
The applicants ahead of me went in one by one and came out not long afterward.
You could tell whether they'd passed the interview from the looks on their faces when they came out.
Some rejoiced, while others grieved.
Because of my interview experience the day before, I was still very nervous when my turn came.
I went in and, to my surprise, found only two interviewers.
I relaxed considerably and introduced myself.
However, the moment one of the interviewers spoke, he left me feeling rather embarrassed.
"Is a wealthy young lady like you here to see how the other half lives?"
My heart sank. "No, I'm not. I genuinely want this job."
"This isn't a game!" The interviewer's voice grew stern. "Customer service representatives have to serve customers. If you encounter a difficult customer, a pampered young lady like you won't be able to stomach the indignity."
I wanted to say more, but he had already called out, "Next..."
The applicant behind me came in, and I couldn't very well keep standing there.
I came out holding my résumé. Once, my status as a wealthy young lady had filled me with a sense of superiority.
Now, however, I wanted to shed that label.
I let out a long sigh. Although I still felt dejected and wronged, I no longer felt so wronged that I wanted to cry, as I had yesterday.
I even felt a little indignant. What right did they have to view me through tinted glasses?
But it was no use. No matter how indignant or wronged I felt, they still wouldn't hire me.
I'd only taken a few steps when someone blocked my path.
"Xiao Hanhan!" Shen Yanchuan sounded delighted. "It really is you! I was just wondering why this person looked so much like you."
My expression darkened. I certainly hadn't forgotten the beauty pageant incident last time, when he and Shen Nian had joined forces to set me up.
The next second, my gaze landed on the man behind him.
Gu Hansheng's voice was as cold as the depths of winter. "When did you two get so close? Huh? Xiao! Han! Han!"
"I'm not close to him at all!" I hurried to explain. After all, I was still his secret lover.
But judging by Gu Hansheng's sinister expression, he had definitely misunderstood.
Shen Yanchuan smiled and stepped up beside me, pressing close. "What are you saying, Xiao Hanhan? We have a very intimate relationship!"
I looked at him in disbelief. "Have you gone mad? What are you talking about?"
He was definitely doing this on purpose, wasn't he?
I turned to Gu Hansheng, wanting to make it clear that there was nothing between Shen Yanchuan and me, but the corner of his mouth visibly lifted a little. "An intimate relationship?"
My body stiffened. "Gu Hansheng, that's not true. There's nothing between us! He's talking nonsense."
Shen Yanchuan narrowed his eyes like a fox, wearing a devil-may-care smile. "Why are you explaining yourself so nervously?"
The way Gu Hansheng looked at me already felt like thorns digging into my back.
"I'll be going."
Shen Yanchuan blocked me again. "What's the rush?"
No wonder he was related to Shen Nian. Even the things that made them annoying were exactly the same.
"I have something to do." As I spoke, I tried to go around Shen Yanchuan and leave.
Gu Hansheng sneered. "Exactly. What's the rush? Didn't you find a job? What are you doing here with a résumé?"
My cheeks burned.
Sure enough, when you lied, the slap in the face came quickly.
The thought that I'd told Gu Hansheng just yesterday that I'd found a job, only to turn up at an interview today clutching my résumé, made me want to leave as quickly as possible.
While Shen Yanchuan was pestering me, all the interviews inside had finished, and the two interviewers had come out carrying the résumés of those they'd hired.
Both froze for a moment when they saw Shen Yanchuan.
The interviewer who had rejected me spoke. "What brings you here in person today, President Shen?"
"Don't mind me. President Gu and I are just having a look around. Carry on."
The interviewer glanced at me. "Aren't you leaving yet, Miss Yu Han?"
