Personality

Shen Yanchuan is flippant, slick-tongued, and fond of provoking reactions. Yu Han remembers this manner from their earlier meetings at gatherings. He repeatedly calls her “Xiao Hanhan” despite her objections and falsely claims that they have an intimate relationship in front of Gu Hansheng 17 37 40.

His teasing often disregards Yu Han’s vulnerability. After her humiliation at Goddess Night, he questions whether the ordeal was worth five million and suggests that she could turn to him for money instead. Yu Han interprets the suggestion as treating her like someone selling herself; Qin An’an likewise distrusts his frivolous behavior toward her 22 23.

He is not invariably unhelpful. He makes his date apologize to Yu Han and An’an, ends his drinking contest when Yu Han asks him to spare her friend, and stays behind to ensure both women get home safely. His usual composure also breaks when a party challenge requires physical intimacy with Yu Han: he looks to Gu Hansheng for help and ultimately chooses to drink instead 40 42 43.

Goddess Night

Before Goddess Night, Shen Yanchuan already knew Yu Han through gatherings as Gu Hansheng’s friend. He encounters her again while helping review applications as one of the event’s sponsors. After reading her application, he directs her to the preliminary banquet at the Dichen Hotel and warns that Gu Hansheng may react strongly to her participation. He subsequently calls Gu Hansheng to invite him, hinting that familiar people have entered 17.

Shen arranges Yu Han’s styling and outfit, has a makeup artist attend to her, and assigns her the final place among twenty-seven contestants. When she objects to her revealing red gown, he says it is the most conservative option and reminds her that withdrawing means abandoning the five-million prize. After her dance, he praises her performance and jokes that Gu Hansheng would pay far more to see it 18 19 20.

When Yu Han ties with contestant No. 18, Shen tells her that both will receive five million and says he voted for her. After Shen Nian challenges the result because Gu Hansheng has not voted, Shen encourages Yu Han to appeal to him. Gu Hansheng instead lets Shen Nian cast the deciding vote, which goes to No. 18 21 22.

Backstage, Shen offers himself as another possible source of money. Confronted by Yu Han, he says he did not tell Gu Hansheng that she was competing, but admits mentioning it to Shen Nian. He then confirms that Shen Nian is his cousin, while claiming they are not close. Yu Han concludes that the cousins have toyed with her; An’an later suspects that the contest may have been a deliberate trap 22 23.

Yu Han’s Job Search

Shen encounters Yu Han after an unsuccessful customer-service interview while accompanied by Gu Hansheng. His familiar nickname and false claim of intimacy immediately provoke Gu’s jealousy. An interviewer recognizes him and addresses him as “President Shen” 37.

As Gu Hansheng mocks Yu Han’s failed job search, Shen adds teasing remarks about their former marriage. When the exchange becomes an argument, he offers her clerical work, followed by a suggestive offer to become his personal secretary. Yu Han refuses and leaves 38.

Shen Nian’s Birthday Party

At a karaoke venue, Shen initially supports the woman accompanying him during a dispute with Yu Han and An’an. Upon recognizing Yu Han, he changes sides, makes his date apologize, and sends her away. He then challenges An’an to drink and brings both women into his private room without warning Yu Han that Gu Hansheng and Shen Nian are inside celebrating Shen Nian’s birthday 39 40.

Shen remains visibly composed as An’an becomes drunk. At Yu Han’s request, he pretends to concede the contest, but then proposes the King’s Game, with a two-glass penalty for refusing a challenge. When Yu Han chooses to drink rather than participate in a bridal-carry challenge with Gu Hansheng, Shen takes her second glass, arguing that Gu should bear the penalty, and drinks it on his behalf 41 42.

A later challenge pairs Shen and Yu Han to touch noses and hold hands for one minute. Shen becomes flustered and asks Gu Hansheng for help. Yu Han turns his teasing back on him, and he ultimately drinks four glasses rather than complete the challenge 42 43.

After the party, Shen stays with Yu Han and the sleeping An’an. He tells Yu Han that she and Shen Nian occupy different places in Gu Hansheng’s heart, adding that he does not mean the distinction she assumes, but is interrupted before explaining. His driver takes An’an home and then returns Yu Han to the villa. Near the villa, Shen remarks that Gu Hansheng must be “going crazy” 43 44.

Call About Shen Nian

On the morning of Yu Han’s first day at work, Shen calls Gu Hansheng while Gu is driving her. The conversation is not disclosed, but Gu tells him to have Shen Nian wait, leaves Yu Han at a subway station, and rushes away 46.
