Background / History

Lost childhood

Jiang Mingxi was separated from his family following a hotel fire in Rongcheng when he was three. Bai Zheming believed that both their parents and his younger brother had died. Jiang Mingxi retained traumatic memories of a little boy trapped in a smoke-filled bathroom while his mother called for him to be brave 180.

After entering an orphanage, he recognized his family home and returned there with the director. A boy at the door denied that he belonged to the family and ordered him driven away. The side story shows three-year-old Jiang Mingxi stabbing the boy’s arm with a small knife before the door was shut; he cried until he lost consciousness on the journey back 187 233.

Bai Zhonghui later had him lured out of the orphanage and thrown into a river. Six-year-old Gong Wang, later known as A-Wang, rescued him. The orphanage director subsequently renamed him Jiang Mingxi 198 219.

Adoption, abuse, and A-Wang

Jiang Mingxi grew up partly through the support of village households before the village chief sent him to Spring Radiance Orphanage. Its director, Aunt Xu, later made it possible for him to attend university 101.

A university couple who adopted him subjected him to severe abuse. The director discovered his condition during a follow-up visit and brought him back before the abuse became fatal. His injuries included serious psychological harm; hospital examinations recorded visual and auditory hallucinations 119 132 177.

A-Wang and his parents helped him recover in a settlement in Country A. Because Jiang Mingxi had become terrified of water, they gradually reintroduced him to the river, its stones, and its fish. It took half a year before he dared touch the water. When the director came to take him back to school, he refused to leave without A-Wang, who eventually accompanied him to Yun City 120.

During another childhood incident, Jiang Mingxi intervened when four armed men attacked A-Wang. He used a slingshot to disarm and distract an attacker, then shielded A-Wang with his body and was stabbed in the back. He awoke three days later to learn that A-Wang had been adopted by a distant family 236 237.

The later side story also recounts an adoption by an out-of-town couple. After the wife became pregnant, they abandoned him with an elderly neighbor rather than returning him to the orphanage, beginning another period of mistreatment 240.

The Jiang Family’s deception

Jiang Mingxi was initially presented as the Jiang Family’s biological son, supposedly recovered at twenty-two. He desperately sought their affection, while Jiang Ke favored Jiang Mingle, the family’s adopted young master and his romantic partner 1 41 69.

The claimed blood relationship was fraudulent. Jiang Ke eventually admitted that the family had bribed the person conducting the DNA test. They intended to conceal earlier crimes and obtain benefits from the powerful family searching for Jiang Mingxi, with Jiang Mingle taking his place 164.

Within the household, Jiang Mingxi endured psychological manipulation and repeated self-harm. Jiang Ke recalled that he had previously obeyed an instruction to slit his wrists. Later disclosures established that the family had never taken him in out of genuine parental concern 41 62 132.

“Transmigration” and the other self

At the opening of the story, Jiang Mingxi believes he has transmigrated into The Overbearing CEO Dotes Every Night as its doomed cannon-fodder young master. He distinguishes himself from the body’s “original owner” and believes that Jiang Ke and Jiang Mingle would have caused that person’s death 1 160.

This understanding becomes complicated as unfamiliar childhood experiences overlap with memories he considers his own. A-Wang’s account of abuse recalls similar experiences from Jiang Mingxi’s supposed life before transmigration 119 120.

Gu Yanchu later determines that Jiang Mingxi’s “other self” emerged shortly before Survival Challenge. The trigger was Jiang Ke locking him up with the family dog after he refused to serve as Jiang Mingle’s foil. Xu Tao found him, removed him from the household, and took him to hospital; Gong Wang then helped contact Gu Yanchu 198.

Appearance

  • Fair skin and a youthful face: In a light-blue shirt and jeans, he resembles a lively college freshman 61.
  • Large eyes: Their slightly upturned corners give him an alluring look without losing their apparent clarity and innocence 61.
  • Slender lower legs and ankles: Described while Song Lan examines his injured knee 23.
  • Left-wrist scar: Usually covered by a wristband; he reveals it while discussing the Jiang Family’s psychological manipulation 41.
  • Distinctive birthmark: One of the identifying details he raises during Bai Zheming’s search for his younger brother 180.

Personality

Jiang Mingxi is outspoken, theatrical, and quick to retaliate against mistreatment. Rather than continuing to beg for the Jiang Family’s approval, he publicly challenges their statements, posts evidence, and directly confronts Jiang Mingle. His humor often accompanies his defiance, including exaggerated self-encouragement and gleeful commentary on his own successes 1 11.

His pursuit of Song Lan is openly affectionate and flirtatious, but it is also his first attempt at courting anyone. Much of his apparent confidence comes from pushing himself past embarrassment. Rejection and dismissive remarks hurt him more deeply than his playful behavior initially suggests 10 52 127.

He values independence and clear boundaries. Liking Song Lan does not make him willing to compete endlessly with other admirers, accept unwanted touching, or remain in a relationship made exhausting by interference. He also insists that romance should not replace a career 59 60 78 84.

With people he trusts, he is protective and attentive. He risks injury for A-Wang, comforts Qianqian, and reassures Song Lan when gossip makes him jealous. His longing for maternal affection remains especially vulnerable: as a child, he worried that asking his mother for a favorite food might make her stop liking him 44 138 152 237.

Further revelations expose Bai Zhonghui’s attempts to kill him. Later, a village kindergarten and its principal provide a new lead to his mother.
