Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Original Compound V1 recipient 28 37 70 Injected by Thomas Godolkin during the original experiments recorded in 1944. Gains extraordinary strength, durability, and resistance to aging. John identifies him as the sole survivor of his initial test group.
Soviet experimentation and Chest Cannon 37 46 71 During thirty-eight years of captivity, develops greater resistance to physical and energy attacks. Soviet experiments produce a chest-mounted energy discharge capable of temporarily stripping supes of their powers.

Appearance

  • Build: Broad, heavily muscular, and sturdy, with high cheekbones and brown-to-hazel eyes 40 44 48.
  • Hair: Wears his hair long enough to comb back with his fingers after recovering his equipment 44.
  • Apparent age: Looks middle-aged but has gained no visible wrinkles during his thirty-eight-year disappearance 48 51.
  • Signature outfit: A palm-green or palm-brown combat uniform with leather shoulder panels, military boots, and an eagle shield 44 70 87.
  • Public imagery: An older Payback portrait depicts him in a Stars and Stripes uniform, grinning with a cigar between his teeth 37.

Personality

Soldier Boy is arrogant, violent, and controlling. Vought’s internal assessment describes him as a workplace bully who frequently opposed the company. His teammates’ hatred stems from sustained abuse rather than a single dispute: Black Noir remembers being forced to drink vodka while Soldier Boy mocked his distress 28 37.

He prizes a rigid, old-fashioned image of masculinity and treats contemporary fashions and behavior with contempt. His speech is routinely obscene, racist, and sexist. Despite his professed disdain for modern society, he readily demands luxury furniture, expensive whisky, and other comforts from Vought 40 48 56.

Betrayal becomes his overriding obsession after captivity. Although the former TNT Twins describe him as someone who honors agreements, they also fear his willingness to prolong torture. His attachment to Liberty exposes a more vulnerable side: imagining a future fishing trip with her helped him endure imprisonment, making the revelation of her involvement especially devastating 51 54.

Abilities & Skills

Superhuman Strength

Soldier Boy possesses strength that Edgar considers comparable to Homelander’s 37.

  • Punches through a load-bearing wall during his escape from containment 38.
  • Tears an apartment door from its hinges and effortlessly overpowers Frenchie, Mother’s Milk, and Kimiko 48.
  • Trades heavy blows with John, although John inflicts more damage during their exchange 70.
  • Physically restrains John during Godolkin’s White House ambush, even after John throws off the other attackers 97.

Durability and Longevity

Original Compound V1 grants him exceptional resilience and an effectively ageless appearance 3 51.

  • Assault-rifle and handgun rounds fail to penetrate his skin 38 48.
  • Crimson Countess’s energy attack leaves only a faint red mark after his return; Soldier Boy attributes this increased resistance to Soviet experimentation 46.
  • Endures decades of machine-gun fire, extreme heat, electric shocks, and poison-gas experiments 40 46.
  • Survives his own near-total energy discharge at the White House, though he is badly burned and left in a deep coma 99.
  • Limits: John’s punches and Heat Vision can injure him. After exhausting his energy, he is vulnerable to a sustained beating that renders him unconscious 70 72.

Chest Cannon

A concentrated orange-red energy discharge developed through Soviet experimentation. Its defining anti-supe effect is the ability to disperse Compound V and temporarily remove powers 37.

  • Destructive output: Vaporizes rubble, melts metal, destroys concrete, and can sweep across an entire floor as Soldier Boy turns his body 70 71.
  • Charging: Builds energy visibly in his chest. One documented charge reaches a dense core within five seconds 70.
  • Resistance to interruption: John’s direct punch into the charging core fails to stop it and instead intensifies the accumulated energy 70.
  • Repeated attacks: Can fire again shortly after an initial discharge, including at point-blank range 70.
  • Claimed ceiling: Soldier Boy says that more than four hundred Soviet tests failed to establish an upper limit. This is his claim, not a demonstrated guarantee of limitless output 71.
  • Cost: Full-power attacks heavily drain stamina, concentration, and endurance. One attack consumes approximately ninety percent of his available energy 72.
  • Counters and exceptions: John’s Heat Vision overpowers the beam in a direct clash. A later hit fails to depower John, who instead discovers renewed vitality and strength 71 72.

Close-Quarters and Shield Combat

Soldier Boy combines punches, elbows, grappling, and shield strikes, using his resilience to remain on the offensive 15 70.

  • Breaks through Payback’s coordinated attack in Nicaragua and closes on individual teammates 15.
  • Uses his shield’s rim to interrupt Crimson Countess’s attack 15.
  • Counters John’s neck grab by seizing his wrist and pulling him into the Chest Cannon’s firing line 70.
  • Feigns defeat before launching another close-range blast 71.

Psychological Vulnerabilities

  • Trauma triggers: A Russian song in Manhattan triggers memories of captivity and an uncontrolled chest blast 40.
  • Psychic interference: Mindstorm disrupts his senses during the Nicaragua ambush, although Soldier Boy’s rage makes continued control difficult 15.
  • Memory impairment: Awakens from a later hibernation pod with severe head pain and fragmented memories; he suspects the drugs used on him 86.
  • Mind control: Godolkin ultimately uses him as a puppet during the White House battle 97.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Eagle shield — Used for defense, striking, and throwing. John takes it during their fight and blocks a Chest Cannon discharge with it, leaving its surface extensively cracked 70.
  • Combat uniform — Preserved and regularly maintained by The Legend during Soldier Boy’s absence; later repainted for his public return 44 87.
  • Cuban cigars — Stored alongside his uniform and shield by The Legend; a recurring part of his appearance 44 87.
  • Vintage jukebox — Installed in his monitored penthouse to play jazz from his own era 56.

History

Original Compound V and Manufactured Heroism

Vought’s archive records Soldier Boy’s participation in the 1944 Original Compound V experiments. Cate later sees Thomas Godolkin administering his first injection in Black Noir’s memories 28 37.

During their confrontation, John exposes Soldier Boy’s celebrated military record as fabricated. According to John, a New Jersey recruiting office rejected him on the day of the Normandy landings; his father, an early Vought investor, then arranged his military paperwork and entry into the V1 project. Clara subsequently wrote the Normandy publicity narrative. Soldier Boy angrily rejects John’s account 70.

He became Vought’s original superhero icon and a central figure in Payback. His early teammates included Bombsight, Private Angel, and Torpedo, all of whom also received successful injections 28 37.

Nicaragua Betrayal and Soviet Captivity

In 1984, Vought approved the Homelander development project while Soldier Boy was becoming increasingly difficult to control. Edgar and Godolkin arranged to deliver him to Soviet intelligence under cover of an operation in Nicaragua. The agreement permitted experimentation but required that he remain alive and controllably frozen, with Vought retaining retrieval rights 37.

Payback attacked him using coordinated energy blasts, gunfire, and Mindstorm’s psychic interference. Soldier Boy fought through the assault and brutally injured Black Noir, leaving him disfigured and unable to speak. Godolkin subsequently saved Noir with a new version of Compound V 15 28.

Publicly reported as killed in action, Soldier Boy was held in a cryogenic facility 120 meters beneath an abandoned Soviet base in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Siberia. He endured thirty-eight years of imprisonment and experimentation 37 40.

Later testimony implicated Liberty as another principal organizer: the former TNT Twins said she supplied his power data and arranged the false operational route, while Mindstorm identified Clara—the woman Soldier Boy knew as Liberty—as the person behind his capture 51 54.

Release and Revenge

After Homelander killed Madelyn Stillwell, Edgar activated Soldier Boy’s thawing plan. He intended to use Soldier Boy against Homelander and the surviving Payback members, restoring Vought’s control through competing superhuman threats 37.

Soldier Boy escaped containment, stole supplies, and eventually reached Manhattan. There, a Russian song triggered a destructive discharge. He then sought out The Legend, recovered his equipment, and learned that Vought and his teammates had arranged his disappearance 38 40 44.

Edgar offered the locations of former teammates and the prospect of restored celebrity. Soldier Boy confronted Crimson Countess, attacked the Boys’ apartment, and interrogated the former TNT Twins. Learning of Liberty’s involvement sent him into another uncontrolled discharge, causing the Nevada massacre and derailing Vought’s planned public comeback 45 46 48 51 52.

When Soldier Boy demanded Liberty’s whereabouts, Edgar used a classified treason charge and evidence of the massacre to force him into temporary seclusion. Soldier Boy later recognized Liberty’s eyes during Stormfront’s televised introduction to The Seven 54 56.

Defeat by John

Sent into action at Edgar’s request, Soldier Boy encountered John and mistook him for Homelander. Their argument over his military history and Clara’s betrayal escalated into a prolonged fight 69 70.

Although his Chest Cannon threatened John and devastated the surrounding corridors, John overpowered its beam with Heat Vision and survived a subsequent close-range blast. With Soldier Boy almost completely exhausted, John beat him unconscious but deliberately spared his life 71 72.

White House Battle and Aftermath

Soldier Boy later awoke in Storm’s office with fragmented memories. She claimed to have rescued him from Soviet imprisonment and announced that she had adopted “a child of our own,” horrifying him 86.

He subsequently appeared beside Victoria Neuman at a public briefing, presenting himself as a defender of the White House. During the ensuing battle, Godolkin controlled him, used him to pin John in a crater, and triggered his charged chest blast beneath a mass of bodies 87 97.

Both survived. Soldier Boy was left charred, depleted, and deeply comatose. John later revealed that he had deposited him on Lolita Island after the battle 99 107.

Connection to John’s Previous Life

Before his rebirth, John regarded Soldier Boy as his biological father and one of the few people around whom he could lower his guard. Their relationship nevertheless included betrayal: Soldier Boy supplied the V1 that John later concluded had dangerously conflicted with the Compound V already in his body. John also remembers eventually returning him to cryogenic confinement 1 3 70.

Relationships

  • Homelander — Biological son, created through Vought’s genetic experimentation. Edgar considers their family connection useful in restraining Homelander 37 70.
  • John Kent — Reincarnated counterpart of his son. John rejects him as a true father after finding a family with the Kents, defeats him, and ultimately leaves him on Lolita Island 3 70 72 107.
  • Liberty / Clara / Stormfront — Former lover whose memory sustained him through captivity. Her involvement in his betrayal becomes the central focus of his revenge 51 54 56.
  • Stan Edgar — Corporate handler and co-organizer of his capture. Later releases him, offers revenge targets, and uses legal threats to control him 37 45 54.
  • Thomas Godolkin — Administers his original V1 injection, helps arrange his betrayal, and later controls him during the White House battle 28 37 97.
  • Black Noir — Abused teammate who participates in the Nicaragua ambush. Soldier Boy’s retaliation destroys his face and ability to speak 15 28.
  • The Legend — Preserves his uniform, shield, and cigars and explains what happened to Payback during his absence 44.
  • Mother’s Milk — Holds a longstanding blood feud against him. After John incapacitates Soldier Boy, Mother’s Milk considers that grievance settled 48 74.
