Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Original aquatic abilities 12 22 Communicates with marine life, swims at high speed, and withstands deep-sea conditions. His original physical advantages depend on water, leaving him vulnerable on dry land.
Expanded use of water sensing 24 Under John’s guidance, learns that sensing water within a body can help locate foreign objects. He cannot yet manipulate water.
New Compound V enhancement 29 Volunteers as the first test subject. His heart temporarily stops while new muscle forms inside it; water throughout the basement levitates before John restores his consciousness.
Quantified water control and ocean “listening” 42 Can freely manipulate water below five tons without expenditure. Gains access to information carried by ocean organisms and seawater itself, with no stated distance restriction while touching the sea.
Fine control of five tons 58 Within less than a week of enhancement, masters the flow, combination, and dispersal of five tons of water. Uses restraint and drowning attacks to defeat Maeve.
Internal bodily-water control 73 Applies lessons from biology and physics to immobilize a Vought agent’s arm without an external water source nearby.
Current-driven swimming 79 Propels himself by controlling surrounding currents rather than swimming physically, becoming more than three times faster than before.
Fluid hardening and pressure manipulation 80 During his fight with Torpedo, locks five tons of water into a dense barrier, then alternates pressure and flow to generate collapsing bubbles that destroy his opponent.
Compressed-water projectiles 85 While mentally exhausted, shapes less than two tons of spilled water into piercing needles, explosive water bombs, and propulsion jets.
Lethal internal-water attack 90 Forces the water within Cindy’s body to rupture her, but the effort leaves him unconscious in an environment with insufficient water to replenish him.
Water-jet flight 103 Raises himself nearly twenty meters on spiraling water jets. Launches a five-ton high-pressure sphere that overturns an armored vehicle, then falls after using up his supporting water.

Background / History

The Deep attended Godolkin University alongside A-Train. Twenty years before John approached him, the two were freshmen putting up posters featuring Homelander’s earliest publicity photograph. This memory later helped him recognize John’s unusually young version of Homelander’s face 12.

After joining The Seven, he received an introduction to Vought’s original heroes from Edgar at the company’s memorial museum. He admired Torpedo, an early military supe whose official history described him as dead. The Deep also remembered watching Torpedo’s televised funeral as a child 80.

His work at Vought included environmental advertisements and deep-sea salvage. Despite those specialized abilities, he was treated as an ineffective member of The Seven and believed he could not defeat any of his teammates. He wanted a higher position partly to prove that he was more than the team’s mascot 23 58.

During an earlier period when Vought sidelined him, Carol brought him into the Church of the Collective. That connection later gave John’s group access to a media network outside Vought’s control 76.

Appearance

The Deep has gills on both sides of his abdomen and usually wears a tight, dark-green superhero suit resembling a wetsuit 12.

  • Abdominal gills: Visibly open and close along his torso 12.
  • Green uniform: His customary costume, worn both during his Vought career and later operations with John’s group 22 89.
  • Later civilian styling: After becoming captain, wears slicked-back, gelled hair and an expensive custom shirt at the Oval Office gathering 104.
  • Battle injuries: Loses two fingers from his left hand during the White House infiltration; the wounds remain tender during the pursuit of Sage 90 95.

Personality

Initially, The Deep is fearful, insecure, and eager to please powerful figures. John remembers his obedience to Homelander as fear rather than loyalty. When confronted in his apartment, he alternates between invoking The Seven’s authority, kneeling, inventing excuses, and attempting to escape 9 13.

His vanity and desire for recognition make John’s offer of second-in-command especially effective. He eagerly anticipates news of the promotion and later seeks praise after defeating Maeve. Even while nearly dying against Torpedo, he regrets that he has not yet attained the position 22 58 80.

His growing confidence produces genuine acts of courage without eliminating his boastfulness. He helps Frenchie during Black Noir’s attack, refuses to retreat when Carol threatens him, and fights desperately after Torpedo kills his marine companions. Following that battle, he becomes less inclined to waste time trading insults with attackers 23 76 80 85.

Marine life matters to him personally, not merely as a source of power. He treats sea creatures as friends, attempts aquarium rescues, and is devastated by the deaths of Aisha and his other aquatic companions 58 80 105.

Abilities & Skills

Aquatic Physiology and Recovery

  • Can travel rapidly underwater and operate at depths where ordinary humans could not withstand the pressure 22.
  • His original physical advantages are water-dependent; deep-sea pressure resistance does not make him automatically bulletproof on land 22.
  • Possesses a superhuman physique capable of surviving a chest stabbing that misses his heart 24.
  • Immersion accelerates healing. After his fight with Torpedo, his wounds begin recovering rapidly in a heated water tank; two days of soaking largely restore his body, though his mental exhaustion persists 82 85.
  • Moisture can also help restore his stamina, as shown while pursuing Sage through a damp coastal tunnel 95.

Marine Communication and Ocean Perception

  • Communicates with aquatic animals and recruits them for transport, reconnaissance, and sabotage 22 79 95.
  • Following New Compound V, can receive information from marine plants, animals, and seawater while maintaining contact with the ocean. Distance is explicitly described as irrelevant to this “listening” 42.
  • Combines organisms’ shared perceptions into three-dimensional outlines of underwater terrain and objects, allowing him to navigate despite darkness and polluted water 79.
  • Uses ocean information to locate Homelander’s coastal hiding place and determine that a child is with him 42.
  • Has a keen sense of smell, sufficient to distinguish John from a shapeshifter who cannot reproduce scents 12.

Water Manipulation

  • Controls water telekinetically, including seawater, fresh water, sewage, and blood-containing water 42 58 90.
  • Shapes water into restraints, enclosing spheres, defensive walls, piercing projectiles, and explosive attacks 58 85 89 90.
  • Uses currents and jets for underwater acceleration, movement across the ground, and limited flight 79 85 103.
  • Can separate filth from sewage while forming a moving water cushion for himself and Kimiko 89.
  • Capacity limit: Water below five tons is initially effortless; exceeding five tons causes dizziness and requires a full day’s sleep to recover 42.
  • Exhaustion limit: After fighting Torpedo, can control only the less than two tons spilled from his broken recovery tank 85.
  • Loss of support: Redirecting all his water into an attack leaves nothing to sustain his flight 103.

Pressure Control and Fluid Hardening

  • Compresses water into a dense barrier capable of stopping Torpedo’s fist just short of his face 80.
  • Rapidly changes flow speed and pressure to create vacuum bubbles whose collapse destroys Torpedo’s body 80.
  • Concentrates pressure into small projectiles that penetrate superhuman bodies 85.
  • Compresses and detonates water against obstacles, including a heavy cast-iron grate beneath the White House 89.

Bodily-Water Manipulation

  • Senses water inside people and can use it to locate foreign objects 24.
  • Immobilizes a Vought agent’s arm by manipulating the water within her body 73.
  • Kills Cindy through internal-water manipulation after she overwhelms his external defenses 90.
  • Controls his own bleeding at the stumps of his severed fingers 90.
  • Target limitation: Cannot manipulate Torpedo’s circulation because his vessels contain a thick, preservative-laden mixture rather than flowing blood 80.
  • Energy cost: Manipulating restricted water inside another body is especially draining. A large surrounding water supply can replenish him, but the damp White House passage cannot sustain the effort against Cindy 90.

Infiltration and Insider Knowledge

  • Accesses Vought archives and supplies John with original Soldier Boy V1 records, although the synthesis pages are missing 13 17.
  • Knows sensitive information about teammates, including Black Noir’s severe nut allergy 22 23.
  • Uses marine creatures, currents, drainage outlets, and crane vulnerabilities to sabotage guarded cargo shipments 79.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Green superhero suit — His regular uniform during operations 22 89.
  • Homemade waterproof phone — Used to warn A-Train that the White House basement contains no hostages 90.
  • Flight 37 black box — Hid the recording in a Pacific trench beyond ordinary shipping routes and Vought’s deep-sea surveillance coverage 13.
  • Secure USB drive — Carries Flight 37 footage and a recording of Edgar’s plans to Carol for distribution through the Church of the Collective 76.
  • Recovery tank and baths — Used to exploit his water-assisted healing after severe injuries 82 87.

Relationships

  • John Kent — Recruiter, leader, and mentor. Initially coerces his cooperation, then offers advancement and helps him develop his powers. The Deep later regards John as the boss who remade him 13 24 73.
  • Homelander — Original captain and a source of intense fear. Homelander dismisses him as useless, while The Deep secretly preserves evidence of the failed Flight 37 rescue 9 13 31.
  • A-Train — University contemporary, teammate, and frequent trading partner in insults. A-Train rescues him from armed guards after the Torpedo battle and explains his water-assisted recovery to the others 12 76 81 82.
  • Frenchie — Ally who helps teach him practical physics, administers the experimental New Compound V, and arranges his recovery tank 29 58 82.
  • Kimiko — White House infiltration partner. They survive Cindy’s attack together and later capture Sage at sea 88 90 95.
  • Queen Maeve — Former teammate and antagonistic ally. He defeats and humiliates her after his enhancement, but later follows John’s order to rescue her girlfriend Elena 58 73.
  • Ambrosius — Female North Pacific octopus with whom he has an intimate relationship; by the White House preparations, he says she has broken up with him 12 88.
  • Aisha — Female great white shark used as a mount during the Newark operation. Her death at Torpedo’s hands helps drive him into a furious counterattack 79 80.
  • Sang Biao — Giant scarred tuna who carries him and Kimiko in pursuit of Sage. The Deep later feeds him salmon at the Oval Office gathering 95 104.
  • Carol — Church of the Collective contact who originally recruited him. He later intimidates her into accepting the evidence handoff and agreeing to his group’s conditions 76.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Recruitment and the V1 Records

John selects The Deep as a Vought insider who can help obtain drugs and confidential records. After confronting him about the hidden Flight 37 black box, John reveals that he is not the Homelander The Deep knows. The Deep guesses that he is a Vought-created clone and attempts to flee, only to be stopped by Heat Vision. He agrees to investigate Soldier Boy, Original Compound V, and veteran researchers after John offers him second-in-command of The Seven 12 13.

The Deep leaves the original Soldier Boy records at a hidden drop. Although the formula’s synthesis pages are absent, the material advances John’s efforts to develop a stable Compound V supply 17.

Black Noir’s Attack and Enhancement

Black Noir follows The Deep to the Boys’ repair-shop hideout, exposing the group’s Compound V stock. Initially hiding because he cannot fight effectively on dry land, The Deep supplies the crucial information about Noir’s nut allergy, then charges him and pulls Frenchie away from danger. Noir stabs him in the chest, but John determines that the blade missed his heart and calls him out for playing dead 22 23 24.

The Deep subsequently volunteers for the first New Compound V injection. The transformation briefly stops his heart and awakens water manipulation. His enhanced ocean perception later helps the team locate Homelander and Ryan 29 42.

Open Defiance of Vought

When Maeve confronts the Boys, The Deep refuses to stand aside, declaring that his new life gives him freedom and something Edgar cannot provide. He overwhelms her with water from pipes and a sewage pool, restrains her, and nearly drowns her before being ordered to stop 57 58.

He later intervenes to extract Elena from Vought surveillance, discovering bodily-water control in the process. When conventional media channels prove vulnerable to Vought censorship, he proposes the Church of the Collective’s independent network and negotiates the evidence handoff with Carol 73 76.

Newark Sabotage and Torpedo

At the Port of Newark, The Deep sabotages two shipments aboard the Polaris and Aegis. He destroys one container, but the other’s protective shell preserves its core. Torpedo then attacks him underwater, inflicting extensive fractures and killing his marine companions 79 80.

Unable to control Torpedo’s preservative-thickened blood, The Deep instead applies John and Frenchie’s lessons about pressure. He destroys Torpedo through fluid hardening and collapsing bubbles, but reaches shore too exhausted to resist capture. A-Train rescues him from the guards, and the group places him in water to accelerate his recovery 80 81 82.

Bounty hunters attack while he is recuperating. He kills and injures several with compressed water, but an ice-powered attacker freezes his supply, leaving him exposed to fire and sonic attacks. He is later shown recovering in a bath at the group’s base 85 86 87.

White House Assault and Captaincy

John assigns The Deep and Kimiko to infiltrate through drainage tunnels, locate the hostages, and release water onto the South Lawn for Starlight. Instead, they encounter Cindy. The Deep kills her through bodily-water manipulation, loses two fingers, and warns A-Train that the basement contains no hostages 88 89 90.

The pair then pursue Sage through a coastal escape tunnel. Riding Sang Biao, they catch her boat; The Deep overturns it and pulls her from the sea while Kimiko forces her surrender 95.

During the final fighting, The Deep demonstrates water-jet flight and destroys a tactical barricade with a massive water sphere. At the gathering seven days after the White House battle, both he and Starlight identify him as The Seven’s current captain 103 104.

Revisiting the Aquarium Rescue

The Deep is the first companion to touch John’s Book of Destiny. It returns him to the night of an attempted dolphin rescue at an Ohio aquarium. Hearing the other captive animals, he expands his plan and floods the facility by opening its water systems 105.

He returns with memories of spending seven or eight years making films and seafood advertisements to repay Vought. He also reports that the alternate history contained Homelander and the others, but no trace of John. The storyline’s closing account confirms that he ultimately achieves his dream of becoming captain of The Seven 105 106.
