| Insight | 134 | Identifies a perception ability that examines objects, living conditions, goals, and intentions. Names it Insight. |
History
Previous life as Homelander
John’s first childhood was spent in Vought’s laboratories, where mistakes brought solitary confinement, electroshock, and other punishments. He later became Homelander, captain of the Seven, exchanging his childhood security blanket for a stars-and-stripes cape and a carefully maintained public image 1 2.
His life ended in the White House after his powers were stripped away. Ryan joined Butcher against him, and Butcher struck his skull with a lead crowbar. John died believing that nobody had truly loved him 1 19.
After rebirth, he reconsidered the V1 injection Soldier Boy had supplied before that defeat. He suspected that Sister Sage had arranged for a sabotaged compound whose apparent enhancement concealed a destructive conflict with the Compound V already in his body; this remained his reconstruction of events rather than a confirmed explanation 3.
Adoption by the Kents
John awoke as an infant in a spacecraft that had crashed into a Kansas wheat field. Jonathan and Martha took him home and named him John Kent. Their affection gave him an experience of family he had never found at Vought 1.
He initially treated good behavior as another public persona, but became deeply attached to his parents. He secretly preserved gifts and keepsakes as evidence that their love was real, fearing that his new life might disappear and return him to his death at Butcher’s hands 2.
At four, John exposed his strength while protecting Jonathan from a thug at a gas station. Jonathan urged him to hide his abilities until he could control them and bear the consequences, but assured him that he would always be his son 4.
Jonathan’s crisis and the return to *The Boys*
At eighteen, John broke his promise of secrecy to rescue people during a tornado, including Jonathan and the family dog, Little Yellow. Jonathan subsequently collapsed 6.
Lucifer stopped time and explained that John had occupied a place intended for someone else in the universe’s script. By saving Jonathan from his prescribed death, John had drawn the world’s attention. Lucifer could suppress the black energy affecting Jonathan’s heart for only three months 7 12.
John entered the world of The Boys to seize its Power of the World and save Jonathan. Although he brutally attacked Butcher, he spared him because revenge mattered less than preserving useful events and securing his father’s survival 9 11.
He recruited The Deep and A-Train, pursued Compound V research, and assembled a coalition that included Cate, Lamplighter, and the Boys. He also extracted Becca and Ryan from confinement despite his unresolved bitterness toward the son who had helped kill him in his previous life 17 19 25 38.
The conflict escalated into an assault on the White House. John directed hostage-rescue and attack teams, fought Godolkin’s controlled supes, and survived an ambush involving Soldier Boy’s chest blast. He subsequently defeated Godolkin physically, only for Godolkin to attempt to possess his body 88 97 101.
By the end of this arc, John had reached 100% World Distortion and acquired the world’s authority. Before leaving, he acknowledged to Cate that correcting past regrets was secondary to finding a way to save his family 106.
Kryptonian identity
After acquiring world authority, John encountered records of Clark Kent’s history and recognized the spacecraft, farm, and adoptive parents as counterparts to his own circumstances. He reacted furiously to the account of Clark allowing Jonathan to die, rejecting the restraint that justified that choice 107.
Back at the farm, Old Joe revealed the escape pod hidden beneath the barn and gave John the seal that activated it. Jor-El’s projection identified itself as the remnant of his biological father and directed him toward a dormant Kryptonian base in Antarctica 109.
John rejected Jor-El’s expectation that he become Earth’s savior. He nevertheless accepted Kryptonian technology, redesigning the House of El battle suit into clothing that suited his own image and could transform on command 111.
Lantern conflicts and Zod’s arrival
John activated a Green Lantern Ring formerly belonging to Abin Sur and later confronted Hector and Sinestro. His involvement also drew Lois Lane deeper into his affairs: after Bureau agents detained her, he rescued her, and she promised to protect his identity 114 127 129 137 138.
He sheltered the defeated Sinestro in the Kents’ cellar, but later concluded that Sinestro had betrayed him when other ring bearers arrived on Earth. At the same time, Insight detected a Kryptonian spacecraft in the Atlantic 140 152.
When American soldiers surrounded the farm, John surrendered rather than make Old Joe and Martha watch him kill. During interrogation, he learned that Zod’s fleet had identified him as Kal-El 164.
John refused Zod’s authority and fought him and his soldiers. He deliberately left the soldiers alive as potentially useful manpower. Their battle damaged Black Zero and endangered Metropolis; Zod later tried to exhaust him inside its sunlight-blocking hull and attack his mind through Parallax’s fear projection 168 170 179 188.
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Blond hair and blue eyes; usually wears his hair swept back to the side 90.
- Resemblance to Homelander: Looks like a younger, more sharply defined version of his former self, making an uncovered face a serious identity risk in Vought’s world 9 90.
- Build: Muscular, with concentrated definition rather than the exaggerated inverted-triangle silhouette Homelander maintains for appearances 90.
- Everyday combat clothing: Favors black, partly because he dislikes how blood stains other colors 90.
- Expression: Frequently uses a deliberate, insincere smile, including when taunting opponents 9 128 168.
Personality
John retains Homelander’s arrogance, violent impulses, and appetite for control. The Kents’ upbringing restrains these traits without erasing them: he remains capable of extreme brutality and is particularly angered by weaker opponents who challenge him 43 49.
His strongest attachment is to his family. Martha’s concern and Jonathan’s honesty gradually teach him that affection need not be manipulation. He treasures ordinary gifts and family outings more than the luxuries of his former celebrity life, but his love also has a possessive edge—he regards threats to his parents as intolerable 2 4.
He is more pragmatic about cooperation than his former self. Encounters with Lucifer convince him that personal strength has limits, while allies can generate resources that improve his chances of survival. He rewards useful assistance and gives people who have helped him considerable latitude, but rejects disloyalty and empty promises 25 74.
John does not embrace universal heroism. He considers himself an Earthling despite his Kryptonian body and rejects both Jor-El’s savior narrative and Zod’s demands. Protecting Earth matters to him principally because it is the home of Martha and Old Joe 111 168.
Abilities & Skills
Kryptonian Physiology and Solar Absorption
- Absorbs energy from Earth’s yellow sun, which supports his extraordinary physical abilities and cellular maintenance, repair, and reconstruction 94 111.
- Continues developing beyond the ceiling he associated with his former Compound V and V1 powers 94.
- Possesses immense strength and durability: rifle rounds flatten against his body, while striking his skull shatters Sinestro’s knuckles 49 138.
- Is not absolutely invulnerable. Homelander injures him during their first fight, and Soldier Boy’s blast penetrates his field and throws him back 43 72.
- Zod attempts to exploit his solar dependence by drawing him into Black Zero’s radiation-blocking interior; the supplied events do not establish whether this succeeds 188.
Flight and Speed
- Flies at supersonic speeds and can create destructive shock waves when accelerating or landing 4 6.
- Travels from the outskirts of New York to Washington in less than three seconds 83.
- Can halt abruptly in midair and combine flight with close-range strikes and grappling 43 83 175.
- Rejects an escape pod capable of approximately Mach 100 as too slow, choosing to fly to Antarctica himself 109.
Heat Vision
- Projects destructive eye beams, described as crimson-gold when clashing with Homelander 43.
- Can cut through spacecraft material and melt Zod’s fear-energy halberd 109 179.
- Can redirect beams around corners using Godolkin’s method 128.
- Previously required a short charge; after Soldier Boy’s blast, he reports that the noticeable delay in mobilizing his energy has disappeared 72.
Bioelectric Field
- Forms an invisible protective shell around himself or other matter 5.
- Stops bullets outside his body and holds them suspended until he releases the field 49.
- Can erupt outward to throw off multiple attackers 97.
- Works with Freeze Breath to slow and stabilize A-Train’s uncontrollably vibrating particles 63.
- Can be tuned to prevent reflected sound waves, which John uses for concealment during his approach to Washington 83.
- Has a finite defensive capacity; Soldier Boy’s chest blast breaches its outer layer 72.
Freeze Breath
- Exhales a freezing mist capable of almost instantly encasing a beetle in hard ice 21.
- Uses the ability for precision intervention, helping stabilize A-Train after an improved Compound V injection 63.
Enhanced Senses and Insight
- Combines long-range observation, X-Ray Vision, Microscopic Vision, and Super Hearing 83 109 128.
- X-Ray Vision cannot penetrate zinc or lead. A shielded area beneath the West Wing also blocks his examination 49 88.
- Insight reads more than physical structure: it can assess objects, living conditions, and intentions 134.
- Uses Insight to trace seismic disturbances to a Kryptonian spacecraft beneath the Atlantic 152.
Mental Power and Resistance
- Gains greatly increased mental power after taking more than half of the world’s weight, allowing rough awareness of nearby creatures and emotions 25.
- Expels Cate from his consciousness when she attempts to read his memories; her later, enhanced mental probe also fails to penetrate his defenses 25 61.
- Warns that his accumulated information and multidimensional perspectives could destroy another person’s mind 25.
- Resists a Parallax-related contaminating entity. A later fear projection collapses after failing to interpret his alien memories 116 188.
Authority of the World
- Holds the authority of the world of The Boys after reaching 100% World Distortion 106.
- Can establish coordinates and enter or leave that world at will 106.
- Can stop, slow, or accelerate its time flow 106.
- Can make spoken commands alter reality, including creating matter and rewriting certain established principles 106.
- Reality alteration remains restricted by the world’s rules and consumes a corresponding amount of Power of the World 106.
Strategy and Power Development
- Recruits specialists and organizes intelligence, research, logistics, reconnaissance, and hostage-rescue operations 17 38 88.
- Identifies unconventional uses for teammates’ powers, including The Deep’s water sensitivity and A-Train’s ability to rapidly deliver injections 24 88.
- Suggests equipment-based improvements, such as a high-capacity battery for Starlight 88.
- Draws on decades of experience manipulating superhero imagery and public presentation 111.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Polymorphic liquid nanometal suit — Redesigned with Kryptonian molecular-reconstruction equipment. Changes within seconds between a Rolex-style watch, a black-and-gray formal suit, and battle attire; repairs damage during combat 111 170.
- Its battle form uses deep red and blue, a standing collar, golden eagle-head shoulder ornaments, and a red-and-white striped cape without stars.
- Replaces the conspicuous chest emblem with collar patterns derived from the House of El crest 111.
- Lantern Rings — Activates Abin Sur’s former Green Lantern Ring through exceptional willpower. Later passages show him wearing a pale-blue ring; its resonance alerts him to other ring bearers 114 140 152.
- Phantom Key / Kryptonian seal — Given to him by Old Joe; unlocks the escape pod and contains Jor-El’s interactive consciousness projection 109.
- Book of Destiny — Identified as its owner and a user; Hughie, Frenchie, and Maeve are also users 106.
- Black mask — Initially buys a cheap matte-black mask to conceal his resemblance to Homelander from Vought surveillance 9.
- Family keepsake box — Buried beneath an oak tree. Holds Martha’s first piece of fruit candy, a wooden spinning top from Old Joe, and a preserved strand of Martha’s hair 2.
- Coming-of-age gifts — Old Joe gives him a dark-brown suit and a used car. John later bases his nanometal formal suit on that sentimental outfit 102 111.
Relationships
- Jonathan “Old Joe” Kent — Adoptive father and John’s foremost acknowledged father. His threatened death drives John’s pursuit of world authority 3 4 11.
- Martha Kent — Adoptive mother. Her unconditional care overturns John’s expectations of punishment and exploitation 1 2.
- Lucifer — Reveals John’s displacement of the universe’s intended protagonist and temporarily restrains the force threatening Jonathan. John remains suspicious of his motives 7 12 75.
- Homelander — Counterpart of John’s former identity. John initially conceals their resemblance, later nearly kills him, and eventually surpasses his V1-enhanced physical abilities 9 43 94.
- Billy Butcher — His killer in the previous life and a hostile collaborator in the new campaign. John prioritizes Jonathan’s survival over killing him for revenge 1 11 88.
- Ryan — Son from his former life. John resents Ryan’s part in his death but still rescues the younger Ryan and Becca, maintaining emotional distance 19 43.
- Soldier Boy — Biological father in his previous life. Their renewed encounters are violent, and Soldier Boy’s chest blast unexpectedly strengthens him 3 70 72.
- Cate Dunlap — Recruited psychic and close collaborator. Helps secure the base, accompanies operations, and learns that his mission concerns saving his family 25 38 71 106.
- A-Train — Recruited through an offer of stable Compound V. John promises to handle Homelander himself and later saves A-Train from an unstable enhancement 17 63.
- The Deep — Provides Vought records and operational support; John pushes him to investigate neglected applications of his powers 17 24 88.
- Queen Maeve — Agrees to cooperate in exchange for rescuing Starlight and guaranteeing Elena’s safety 61 63.
- Lois Lane — Investigates his childhood gas-station incident, then becomes entangled in his conflict with the Bureau. Promises not to expose his identity after he rescues her 117 129.
- Jor-El — Biological father represented by an interactive projection. Supplies knowledge and technology, but John refuses his prescribed savior role 109 111.
- Sinestro — Defeated opponent whom John hides at the farm; John later concludes that he has betrayed him 138 140 152.
- General Zod — Kryptonian adversary whose claims of authority John rejects. Their conflict extends through Metropolis and Black Zero 168 175 179 188.
