Background / History
Childhood and connection to Voldemort
Harry’s parents, James and Lily Potter, rejected Voldemort’s recruitment attempts three times and participated in operations against the Death Eaters. Draco identifies their resistance as fulfilling a condition of the prophecy concerning Harry 205.
Peter Pettigrew betrayed the location of the Potters’ hiding place to Voldemort. When Voldemort’s Killing Curse rebounded, it destroyed his body and accidentally lodged a fragment of his soul in Harry’s lightning-shaped scar. Harry consequently became an unintended Horcrux 328 580.
Harry grew up at 4 Privet Drive with the Dursleys, whose household did not treat him as family. His Hogwarts acceptance letter arrived when he was eleven, marking the beginning of his departure from that life 331 434.
First year at Hogwarts
On the Hogwarts Express, Harry initially does not understand Ron’s hostility toward Draco and watches the unfamiliar boy with curiosity 40.
During his Sorting, the hat recognizes both courage and qualities suited to Slytherin, including ambition and decisiveness. Harry repeatedly refuses Slytherin, and the hat ultimately respects his choice by placing him in Gryffindor 48.
Harry later becomes absorbed in a mysterious mirror, remaining pale and distracted when Draco, Hermione, and Ron approach him. When he and Ron subsequently search the classroom, they find the mirror gone and report that Draco’s Invisibility Cloak is missing as well 293 299.
His curiosity also draws him toward the Gringotts theft and the Philosopher’s Stone. He remembers collecting a mysterious package with Hagrid on the day connected to the theft. However, the confrontation intended for him never occurs as planned: Draco abandons Dumbledore’s arrangement and seals Voldemort himself 236 314.
Reunion with Sirius Black
After Pettigrew is exposed as Ron’s rat, Scabbers, Harry immediately visits Ron. Although Pettigrew betrayed his own parents, Harry recognizes Ron’s distress and stays beside him with their friends 328 329.
Sirius subsequently enters Gryffindor Tower and introduces himself as Harry’s godfather. Harry initially has no knowledge of him and reacts with uncertainty. Draco explains that Sirius was James’s closest friend, was framed for Pettigrew’s betrayal, and spent thirteen years in Azkaban 330 331.
Learning that someone still considers him family overwhelms Harry. Dumbledore arranges a safer meeting for the following day, and Sirius accompanies him on the journey home. At King’s Cross, they prepare to make matters clear to the Dursleys so Harry will no longer be forced back into their house 331 332 333.
Life with Sirius
By the beginning of second year, Harry is noticeably more confident. He wears well-fitting robes, stands with relaxed shoulders, and speaks with an ease Draco attributes to being loved and supported. Harry describes a summer of outings with Sirius, who also helps him choose a new broomstick 353.
During the Chamber of Secrets disturbances, other students begin casting suspicion on Harry. Draco maintains that Harry’s connection to Voldemort does not make him dark, while Harry insists that hostile gossip will not break him. Ron and Olivia agree to remain close to him and discourage solitary or rash action 370 373.
In a later Quidditch final, Harry rides the Firebolt Sirius has given him and catches the Golden Snitch against Ravenclaw. His catch secures Gryffindor the Quidditch Cup and gives Wood a victorious final match before graduation 452.
Abduction and resurrection ritual
Harry is abducted by Voldemort’s accomplices and held in an abandoned Gringotts vault. His disappearance causes widespread alarm at Hogwarts, while Sirius repeatedly tries to leave and search for him 556 566.
Voldemort uses Harry’s blood in his resurrection ritual. After Draco and Hermione rescue him, Harry awakens with bodily pain and a wound on his arm. Despite his weakness, he immediately tries to warn Sirius and Dumbledore that Voldemort has returned 571.
He is stunned to learn that Draco and Hermione have already dealt with Voldemort. Unable to reconcile the news with the enemy who has haunted his life, Harry asks for time to himself 571.
Removal of the soul fragment
In a protected Hospital Wing ward, Draco explains the true cause of Harry’s Parseltongue, nightmares, and perceptions of Voldemort. The revelation that he carries part of Voldemort’s soul initially horrifies Harry 580.
Using ancient magic, Draco draws the fragment out through Harry’s scar. The procedure causes intense pain, but afterward the scar loses its angry redness and becomes a barely visible silver mark. Harry experiences the change as liberation from his connection to Voldemort 580.
Following examination and treatment, Madam Pomfrey permits him to leave the Hospital Wing. Harry wants to return to Gryffindor Tower, see his friends, and resume ordinary classes and meals rather than remain defined by his ordeal 581.
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Black hair and green eyes 48 51.
- Initial build and clothing: Small and thin when first boarding the Hogwarts Express, wearing ill-fitting old clothes and appearing visibly uneasy 353.
- After living with Sirius: Slightly taller, dressed in properly fitting wizarding robes, with relaxed posture and a steady gaze 353.
- Distinguishing mark: A lightning-shaped forehead scar that fades to a faint silver trace after Voldemort’s soul fragment is removed 580.
Personality
Harry’s courage is accompanied by a strong insistence on choosing his own path. He rejects Slytherin despite the Sorting Hat’s promises of power and leadership. Later, when injured after Voldemort’s ritual, his first concern is warning others rather than his own recovery 48 571.
He is loyal without being indifferent to other people’s pain. When Pettigrew’s identity is revealed, Harry comforts Ron despite being the son of the people Pettigrew betrayed. He also avoids simply echoing Ron’s resentment of Draco, showing curiosity about Draco’s accomplishments instead 177 329.
Family and belonging have a profound effect on him. Sirius’s arrival transforms his belief that he is alone, and life with his godfather gives him greater confidence. Even after surviving extraordinary dangers, Harry’s stated wish is to return to his friends and live like a normal student 331 353 581.

Parseltongue and Voldemort-Linked Perception
These abilities originate from Voldemort’s soul fragment rather than Harry’s own ancestry 580.

- Can sense Voldemort’s emotions and experience dreams from his perspective 580.
- Suffers nightmares involving killing and darkness, explained as projections of the soul fragment rather than prophecies 580.
