Background / History
Family and arrival at Hogwarts
Ron grows up among numerous accomplished siblings. Although Draco regards the Weasleys as a comparatively tolerant family that gives its children freedom, Ron privately measures himself against his brothers and worries about his standing at home 19 174.
On the Hogwarts Express, Ron reacts suspiciously when Draco offers him and Harry seats, sarcastically rejecting his “kindness.” At the Sorting Ceremony, he is called first and becomes intensely embarrassed when Fred and George loudly tease him. His placement in Gryffindor brings obvious relief 40 47.
Conflict with Draco and Hermione
Ron’s early hostility toward Draco persists even when Draco helps other students. After he disparages Draco’s warming magic, Hermione insists that helping their cold classmates deserves acknowledgment 43 44.
Their dispute escalates when Draco joins the Gryffindor table. Ron orders him away and tries to stop Hermione from negotiating an exchange of questions and answers with him. Hermione rejects Ron’s interference, prompting him to leave the Great Hall in humiliation; Harry follows him 71 72 73.
Ron subsequently tries to expose Draco’s lack of preparation in Herbology by pointing out his missing textbook and suggesting that Sprout question him. During another confrontation, he reveals that Draco has been disowned and belongs to Gryffindor, undermining Draco’s attempt to deter Peeves through his family connections. Ron’s further mockery helps provoke Peeves into attacking Draco 85 96.
His objections also extend to Hermione’s growing closeness with Draco. Ron suggests that she may be affected by a Love Potion or Confundus Charm, which she angrily denies. Draco challenges him to substantiate the accusation through an examination by Madam Pomfrey or Dumbledore, leaving Ron unable to answer 116 117.
Losing the bet and joining the second team
Before Quirrell’s Defence Against Dark Magic class, Ron accepts Draco’s wager about the quality of the lesson. A victory would earn him a new wand; a loss would make him Draco’s underling at Hogwarts. Despite Harry’s warning, Ron agrees and later reluctantly acknowledges Draco as his boss 196 201.
Their interactions gradually become more companionable. Draco reassures Ron about his good qualities after teasing him over his romantic prospects, and the two play a closely contested game of Wizard’s Chess that Ron wins 242.
When Gryffindor’s second Quidditch team holds open tryouts, Ron loudly insists that he is uninterested while secretly practicing on his old broom. Draco calls him out of the crowd, tests his flying, and selects him despite his protest that he never volunteered 259.
Scabbers’s exposure
Near the end of the school year, Percy brings Ron and Scabbers to the Hospital Wing under the pretext of mandatory pet screening. There, McGonagall and Dumbledore reveal that the rat is Peter Pettigrew, the fugitive responsible for betraying Harry’s parents. Ron initially refuses to believe that the pet kept by his family since his childhood could be a criminal 328.
Once the truth becomes undeniable, Ron rejects Pettigrew and is overwhelmed by disgust, fear, and the breach of trust. His parents and teachers repeatedly assure him that he is not to blame. Rather than leave immediately, he stays at Hogwarts with his friends until the following day’s train; Lavender accompanies him back to the common room, while Draco discourages curious onlookers 329.
Later school events
On a later return to Hogwarts, Ron borrows Draco’s Death Glasses and sees the Thestral pulling their carriage. During the same journey, he enthusiastically supports the idea of Hermione becoming Minister for Magic once Draco suggests that the connection might secure him a job. Hermione firmly refuses to promise preferential treatment 356.
His tendency to show off creates trouble in Hagrid’s Hippogriff lesson. Ignoring Hermione’s warning, Ron approaches incorrectly and receives a wing strike. Draco negotiates another chance, after which Ron follows the required bowing procedure and earns the creature’s reluctant acceptance 440.
Ron later plays a crucial role in exposing a wizard impersonating Harry. He first notices that “Harry” is unusually quiet and grips his wand too tightly, then identifies unfamiliar eyes. The impostor escapes after the students attack, and Ron explains that he and the real Harry had separated while shopping in Hogsmeade 554 555.
Appearance
Ron has untidy red hair, blue eyes, and a freckled face 40 95.
- His ears and neck flush conspicuously when he is embarrassed or angry, particularly during public teasing 47 72 73.
- His expressions readily reveal his feelings, from suspicion and resentment to relief and excitement 40 47 242.
Personality
Ron is outspoken, competitive, and sensitive to public embarrassment. His early treatment of Draco is strongly shaped by hostility toward the Malfoy family: even an offer of seats is treated as suspicious, while Hermione’s willingness to speak with Draco feels to him like taking an enemy’s side 40 72 73.
His envy is closely tied to insecurity about his siblings. After seeing Draco’s advanced Transfiguration, he imagines how comparable talent might improve his standing within the Weasley family and stop his brothers from teasing him. The Mirror of Erised similarly shows him as Quidditch captain, Prefect, and eventually Head Boy; he is embarrassed to expose these ambitions publicly 174 293 296.
Ron often disguises his wishes with bluster. He denies wanting a second-team place while practicing in secret, and boasts about fighting trolls after having taken shelter during an attack. Nevertheless, he can accept correction: he honors his lost wager, apologizes after disrupting revision, and follows the proper Hippogriff-handling procedure when given another chance 201 259 303 440 451.
Friendship remains especially important to him. His parents recognize that he feels safest beside his friends after Scabbers’s exposure. Draco also describes him as cheerful, loyal, funny, sociable, softhearted, and willing to help others—praise that immediately restores his confidence 242 329.
Abilities & Skills
Wizard’s Chess
Ron is a capable player who patiently explains the rules before facing Draco 242.
- Defeats Draco in a difficult match after his own formation comes under serious pressure 242.
- Recognizes that Draco’s apparently casual play is much stronger than a beginner’s, although he does not know Draco has obtained chess knowledge through his system 242.
Flying
Ron practices seriously when he wants a place on Gryffindor’s second team, despite publicly denying any interest 259.
- Trains secretly in an empty corner using an old broom 259.
- Passes Draco’s flying assessment and is selected for the team; his playing position is not specified 259.
Defensive Magic
Ron’s later Shield Charm earns praise from Professor Lupin 583.
- His classmates connect its solidity to the frequent defensive practice provided by Peeves’s dungbomb attacks 583.
- Earlier spellwork is more uneven: nerves interfere with his pronunciation in Charms, and his first documented match-to-needle attempt remains incomplete 156 169.
Observation
Ron’s familiarity with Harry allows him to detect an impersonator through small discrepancies 554 555.
- Notices unusual silence and a tense grip on a wand before confirming that the impostor’s eyes are unfamiliar 554 555.
- Helps recognize that a stranger may have used a dragon egg to coax information about Fluffy out of Hagrid 307.
Equipment / Items
- Wand — Draco judges Ron’s existing wand to be poorly suited to him and offers a replacement as the prize in their wager. Ron loses the bet, so it does not earn him a new wand 196 201.
- Old broom — Used for his secret flying practice before the second-team tryouts 259.
- Death Glasses, borrowed — Temporarily lent by Draco; allow Ron to see the carriage’s Thestral 356.
Relationships
- Harry Potter — Best friend and dormitory companion. Ron initially shields Harry from Draco, while Harry repeatedly tries to restrain Ron’s confrontations. Their familiarity later helps Ron expose Harry’s impersonator 40 73 117 150 554 555.
- Draco Malfoy — Initially an object of deep suspicion and resentment; later Ron’s nominal boss after their wager, chess opponent, and second-team leader. Draco also supports him after Pettigrew’s exposure 40 201 242 259 329.
- Hermione Granger — Friend whose competence Ron values but whose independence repeatedly frustrates him. She rejects his attempts to control whom she speaks to or sits beside, and later refuses to promise him a Ministry job through personal connections 48 73 117 356.
- Lavender Brown — Frequent sparring partner who challenges his boasting and lack of practice. Draco suggests that their bickering could develop into romance, but Ron rejects the idea. Lavender nevertheless offers him direct comfort after Scabbers is exposed 259 297 329 451.
- Fred and George Weasley — Older brothers whose teasing contributes to Ron’s embarrassment and insecurity. Their concern becomes serious after his public falling-out with Hermione, and their pranks continue to feature prominently in his stories 47 73 174 551.
- Percy Weasley — Older brother and Prefect. Percy escorts Ron’s year to the dormitories and later deceives him about a pet inspection to bring Scabbers to the Hospital Wing 52 328.
- Arthur and Molly Weasley — Parents who comfort him after Pettigrew’s exposure and agree that he should remain with his friends until the train home 329.
- Ginny Weasley — Younger sister. Ron complains privately about her and their mother’s enthusiasm for Lockhart 346.
- Scabbers / Peter Pettigrew — Trusted family pet revealed to be a fugitive wizard. Ron is devastated by the deception and explicitly refuses ever to see him again 328 329.
