Background / History
Early Life and Symbiosis
Xing Lan lost her parents in a car accident. Bullying during her school years made her withdrawn. After joining the military, she encountered the Star Moon Butterfly and entered symbiosis with it to stay alive; her temperament subsequently changed drastically 141.
Joining the Special Investigation Squad
At nineteen, Xing Lan met Nanming and Si Xiaobei to apply for the Special Investigation Squad. Nanming warned her that its mortality rate was sixty percent—twice that of other Night Stars—but she remained determined to join 24.
Her arrival at the disguised headquarters was less discreet than intended: she burst into Star Barbershop announcing herself, startling Feng Xuan into ruining a customer’s haircut. In the basement, Sun Hai tested her strength and defeated her by shattering her wings. Despite her loss, he accepted her and ordered that she receive a briefing and dormitory room 25 26 27.
Xing Lan began training early the following morning. She confidently challenged Liu Xiaogang, only to emerge bruised and limping. Rather than resent him, she accepted rigorous training as part of the squad’s responsibilities 30 31.
Caring for Hela and Early Missions
Sun Hai brought Xing Lan to meet Hela, and Xing Lan became closely involved in her daily care. They shared a room, played together, and grew affectionate. Xing Lan later helped teach Hela upright running and participated in her combat training 28 29 30 40 41.
On her first investigation mission, Xing Lan found and killed a Beast King-level Variant without reporting its location or checking its strength. Feng Xuan reprimanded her for charging in recklessly 32 33.
While seeking inexpensive accommodation with Hela, she discovered a spider-like Variant in an isolated rental property. The landlady restrained Xing Lan during the fight, allowing the creature to reach Hela and cut her in half. Believing Hela dead, Xing Lan collapsed in grief and nearly died herself before Liu Xiaogang intervened. Hela’s regeneration turned her despair into tearful relief 33 34 35 36.
Although Xing Lan wanted Hela to fight beside her, she struggled with the danger that becoming a Night Star would bring. During Hela’s subsequent recruit training, a month-long assignment kept them apart over New Year. Hearing Hela say she missed her moved Xing Lan to tears 38 81.
Hela’s Return and the Village Investigation
Xing Lan helped collect Hela from training and enthusiastically welcomed Ye Yiqing and Ye Ciqing into the squad, despite Feng Xuan’s reminder that recruitment required the captain’s approval. Back at headquarters, she was dismayed to learn that Hela had reached her own realm and no longer needed her protection as before 104 105 106.
During a later village investigation, Xing Lan fought a wind-wielding opponent in the air and cut through his tornado defense. She and Sun Hai pursued him to a clearing, where he summoned a gigantic Variant worshipped as a god. Its sensory interference disoriented her, and the prolonged fighting depleted her spiritual power until she could produce only a few stars rather than a crescent attack 119 120 121 125.
Betrayal and Death
While searching for Feng Xuan in the artificial-intelligence facility, Xing Lan recognized star-shaped route markers he had carved. They led her and Hela to the core computer room, where they found him shot dead. Xing Lan followed his blood-written instruction and connected the Satellite charm to the server 137.
Ye Yiqing and Ye Ciqing then turned against them. Their betrayal devastated Xing Lan, who had sincerely regarded the brothers as comrades. She nevertheless coordinated with Hela, using a dense star barrage to prevent Ye Yiqing from assisting his brother. Ye Yiqing’s retaliatory Demon Slaying attack shattered her wings 138 139.
After the brothers fused into Ye Qing, Xing Lan attempted to get Hela out of the building, but their escape was blocked. Despite exhaustion, burns, and a pierced thigh, she continued fighting. Learning that Hela was actually the mass-killing HeLa Cell nearly broke her resolve; Sun Hai and Liu Xiaogang’s refusal to abandon their teammate helped her stand with them again 140 142.
Ye Qing ultimately cut Xing Lan in half despite Hela’s attempt to shield her. Dying in Hela’s arms, she recognized Hela’s genuine feelings, asked to be eaten, and admitted that she did not want to die. Hela consumed her and rejoined the battle in a transformed state 144.
Post-Death Appearances and Return
Xing Lan subsequently appeared alongside her deceased teammates, mourning her early death and protesting that she had not yet saved the world. Much later, Hela spoke with her through a glass sphere. Xing Lan immediately questioned her about her welfare, while Hela expressed hope that she could bring her former companions back to life 148 332 333.
When the squad later encountered Deputy Commander Jian Luo, Xing Lan concluded that the Night Stars organization had resurrected them; this was her interpretation of their return. She subsequently resumed life at Star Barbershop and named the white wolf accompanying Hela “Little Hela” 510 513.
Appearance
- Build: Slender despite her enormous appetite; described as having the face and figure of a mature beauty 25.
- Eyes: Blue, with starry or star-shaped effects accompanying excitement and ability use 24 26 137.
- Symbiotic manifestation: Two pairs of butterfly-like wings formed from stars and starlight 26.
- Introductory outfit: Black overcoat, gentleman’s hat, black mask, sunglasses, and a briefcase—an attempted disguise that attracted more attention than it avoided 24.
- Sleepwear: Stitch pajamas 30 110.
Personality
Xing Lan approaches Night Star work through the language and expectations of adventure fiction. She delights in secret bases, dramatic entrances, mysterious powers, and supposedly hidden masters. Ye Yiqing’s eyepatch and sword prompt questions about sealed powers, ninjas, and breathing techniques, while Ye Ciqing readily joins her theatrical role-playing 24 25 34 104 105.
Her confidence often exceeds her experience. She celebrates her aerial advantage before Sun Hai has finished testing her and attacks her first mission target without assessing its realm. Even after later missions, Sun Hai still has to remind her that the squad’s purpose is reconnaissance—not charging into every battle 26 33 516.
Beneath the theatrics, she is hardworking and deeply loyal. She rises at five thirty to train, accepts painful sparring without blaming her teammate, and insists that romantic feelings cannot justify abandoning Night Star duties. Her attachment to Hela is especially protective: she celebrates Hela’s achievements, comforts her after nightmares, and continues fighting beside her when escape appears impossible 30 31 40 110 138 140.
She also has a striking appetite. Her meal before joining nearly costs Nanming the squad’s entire daily food budget, and she later eats more than ten bowls during the village investigation 25 114.
Abilities & Skills
Star Moon Butterfly Symbiosis
Xing Lan’s powers originate from her bond with the Star Moon Butterfly 26.
- Her partner is classified as City Destruction Level; this is distinct from Xing Lan’s own cultivation realm 26 106.
- Becoming a symbiote coincided with a drastic change from her formerly withdrawn temperament 141.
Star Wings and Flight
She manifests two pairs of star-formed butterfly wings for aerial movement, defense, and ranged attacks 26.
- Flight: Allows her to pursue airborne opponents and gives her an overall mobility advantage over Hela at King Master 107 119.
- Shielding: The wings can intercept a blade attack 26.
- Vulnerability: Sufficiently powerful or well-placed attacks can shatter them and send her falling 26 27 139.
- Sensory interference: Flight becomes dangerous when an opponent disrupts her perception; Sun Hai specifically orders her to remain grounded against such a Variant 121.
Star Projectiles
Xing Lan fires streams of stars from her wings or forms individual stars in her hands 26 35.
- Sustained volleys crater the training-room floor and pressure opponents from a distance 26.
- Individually formed stars can destroy a lock 35.
- Concentrated fire can occupy a skilled opponent and prevent him from assisting an ally 139.
- Her exceptionally dense barrage against Ye Yiqing consumes most of her stamina, leaving her slower to evade his counterattack 139.
Crescent Attacks and Saber Combat
She creates crescent-shaped attacks in her hand or through her blade 26 35.
- A large blue crescent blocks Sun Hai’s opening two-blade strike 26.
- A spinning crescent grows as it travels and cuts through a tornado, severing the wind user’s ear 119.
- She combines agility, slides, and ranged attacks to exploit slower enemies 35.
- Her technique initially falls short of Sun Hai’s and Liu Xiaogang’s; both defeat her while holding back 27 30 31.
- Crescent attacks require sufficient spiritual power. When exhausted, she must fall back on weaker star attacks 125.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Straight saber: Her usual weapon is a first-tier Variant Artifact. Such weapons are stronger than ordinary equipment but lack special functions 41.
- Fire Imbuement — briefly handled: She activates Ye Yiqing’s flaming blade with mental power and produces a flaming blade of light before returning it. It is not her own weapon 111.
- Satellite charm — temporarily used: She connects it to the facility’s server according to Feng Xuan’s final instruction 137.
Relationships
- Hela — Her closest companion and the focus of her protective affection. Xing Lan cares for and trains her, while Hela tries to shield her from Ye Qing. Xing Lan’s death causes Hela an intense emotional response 29 40 110 144.
- Star Moon Butterfly — Her symbiotic partner, bonded with her during a life-threatening encounter after she joined the military 26 141.
- Sun Hai — Captain and strict mentor. He accepts her after defeating her in a test and repeatedly corrects her recklessness 27 112 516.
- Liu Xiaogang — Teammate and sparring instructor. He trains her rigorously and saves her from the spider-like Variant 30 31 35.
- Feng Xuan — Teammate who briefs her, reprimands her unsafe decisions, and harbors romantic feelings for her. Their habit of drawing stars together lets her recognize his emergency trail 27 33 41 137.
- Si Xiaobei — Teammate who treats her sparring injuries and comforts her when she is distressed. Her overenthusiastic acceptance celebration initially leaves him struggling for breath 27 31 36 81.
- Nanming — Vice captain who handles her initial interview, warns her about the squad’s mortality rate, and brings her to headquarters 24 25.
- Ye Yiqing and Ye Ciqing — Recruits she welcomes with immediate trust. Their later betrayal overturns her belief in their shared comradeship 105 138.
- Ye Qing — The brothers’ fused form and Xing Lan’s killer 140 144.
- Little Hela — White wolf she names when the squad agrees to keep it 513.
