Background / History
The Human Hela and the Variant
The human girl whose identity Hela adopts was born on December 1, 2012, to an Eluo father and a Great Xia mother. She lived in Eluo until her father died in an accident when she was sixteen, then moved with her mother to City C, Shan’an. Hospital records identify her as seventeen and state that her mother had been diagnosed with a terminal illness six months earlier 19.
The human Hela had albinism, could not tolerate prolonged sunlight or strenuous exercise, and found drawing unusually grounding when much of her life felt unreal. During her mother’s hospitalization, her classmate Zhao Rui brought meals, helped with household tasks, and took her to the hospital by bicycle. Their growing closeness left her shyly considering her feelings for him 277 282.
The Variant and the human girl are distinct consciousnesses, not simply one person with lost memories. Hela eventually explains that she had been using the girl’s identity and later allowed her soul to control the body. Following her own death, she also brings the human Hela back to life 334 514.
Life with Sun Hai’s Squad
Sun Hai initially takes Hela home believing she is a vulnerable girl who needs care. Her unfamiliarity with ordinary behavior is pronounced: she grabs scalding noodles with her bare hands, prompting him to feed her and plan to obtain a spoon 20.
The squad considers two explanations for her condition: a human girl surviving through symbiosis with [HeLa Cell], or [HeLa Cell] itself assuming another form. Hela is taught to introduce herself as a Symbiote, while Sun Hai, Feng Xuan, Liu Xiaogang, Xing Lan, and Si Xiaobei provide physical training, theoretical instruction, language practice, and lessons in morality 37 42 44.
She enters recruit training and becomes Keke’s roommate. Her early goals are practical rather than heroic: becoming a stronger Night Star would let her fight and eat more energy-rich Variants, extending her survival 44 48 159.
Exposure and Xing Lan’s Death
Night Kill recognizes Hela as [Life], revealing a designation Hela herself does not yet understand. Hela later overpowers Night Kill and attempts to devour her despite her pleas and offer of resurrection through the Light God Society 96 100.
During the battle with Ye Qing, Hela tries to protect Xing Lan but cannot prevent her from being cut in half. At Xing Lan’s request, Hela consumes her dying body, transforms, and continues fighting beside Sun Hai and Liu Xiaogang 144.
Her identity as a man-eating Variant destroys her place among humans. Ye Yiqing accuses her of consuming City C’s million inhabitants, while Han Xiaoxiao pursues revenge for her brother’s death. Exhausted and badly weakened, Hela is unable to defeat Xiaoxiao and survives only with outside help 153 158 160.
United States and the Pursuit of Strength
After reaching the United States, Hela abandons the belief that merely appearing harmless will keep her safe. She resolves to become powerful enough to destroy anything threatening her survival. She kills and impersonates Jamie, then uses further disguises to infiltrate a Night Star group and obtain its equipment 160 161 162.
Sky identifies her as [Life], one of the Five Calamities, alongside Sky, Ground, Ocean, and Four Seasons. Hela begins actively developing her powers with Tuote’s assistance and declares that she will stand at the pinnacle of the world 176 177 181.
Her attempt to obtain Godslaying Technology Company’s Battle Armor includes working as a singer and making contact with its pilot Diyana. She eventually swallows and operates multiple suits directly from inside her body, using them against the company’s pilots 207 209 221.
Five-Year Sealing and the Human Soul
Ground seals Hela inside rock for five years. Remaining conscious throughout, she questions why she should struggle for power when being sealed away still fulfills her only innate desire: staying alive 334.
Seeking a purpose beyond survival, she lets the original human Hela’s soul wield her body. The girl awakens among the Sea Shark Dragons, initially unaware of her strength or what has happened to her. Discovering that her body belongs to the creature responsible for killing her mother and Zhao Rui leads her to repeatedly attempt suicide; the Variant consciousness intervenes 279 291 316 317.
Hela ultimately puts the human soul back to sleep because it cannot withstand the truth. She decides to search for meaning herself, says farewell to the Sea Shark Dragons, and secures cooperation with the Light God Society 334.
Partnership with the Light God Society
Hela explicitly maintains that she is working with the Light God Society rather than joining it. Through this partnership, she learns that the Five Calamities originate from [Ultimate], the incarnation of Earth’s will, and can be reborn even after their Power of the Source is annihilated—though their memories and identities may not survive 340 394.
Her later activities include fighting Silver Ghost, developing life control, recovering Variant Artifacts, confronting a Night Star base, and battling Ground again. Ground acknowledges that both her raw strength and combat intelligence have increased severalfold 350 357 361 377 418.
Noah becomes particularly important to her changing understanding of life. His apparent happiness interests her, but she later concludes that he has deceived and delayed her. She destroys and consumes his corpse in anger 440 444.
Ultimate, Death, and Reincarnation
After fusing with the other Five Calamities, Hela accesses their memories through the souls within her body. Sky’s memories reveal a previous incarnation of Life: an elderly man who had married a human woman 478 479.
Having mastered all five powers, Hela becomes the strongest being in the world. Keke nevertheless confronts her, begging her to stop killing their former classmates and ultimately asking her to die. Later, Keke embraces her from behind; although physically incapable of restraining her, she leaves Hela motionless long enough for Brown’s Space Slash to reach her 504 505 508.
Before dying, Hela understands her purpose as judging whether humanity deserves to continue existing. She recognizes both human cruelty and the capacity of individuals to choose goodness 509.
Nearly a year later, she reincarnates, grows into a wolf, and encounters the resurrected human Hela. Her memories return, and she follows the girl back to Xing Lan and the others. She subsequently awakens in a black void in her familiar white-haired form and meets a five-eyed stranger whose power exceeds even her Ultimate form 514.
Appearance
Hela’s customary appearance reproduces the human girl’s pale complexion, white hair, and pink eyes, but her body is entirely mutable 163 177 315.
- Hair: Snow-white, commonly reaching her waist 163 414.
- Eyes: Usually peach-pink; blood-red pupils also appear during confrontations 177 255.
- Build: Usually a small young woman around 1.6 meters tall; absorbed energy can increase her height and fullness 192 204.
- Transformed body: Can become black liquid, animals, enormous masses of flesh, or shapes bearing extra eyes, mouths, claws, and tentacles 6 66 221 222.
- Clothing: Can manufacture hair-like fabric from her own flesh, producing garments that resemble ordinary clothing but feel slightly unusual 177.
Personality
Survival is Hela’s original overriding motive. Early on, she has little ambition to improve once food, shelter, and safety are available. Her decision to hunt Variants comes from their value as energy sources, not an innate commitment to protecting humanity 159.
Her expressionless speech and limited social understanding often contrast with her intelligence as an adaptive organism. She initially accepts her abductors’ hospitality at face value, yet later deliberately impersonates people, stages apparent deaths, and studies how to exploit her opponents’ expectations 83 161 162.
Hela perceives pain and emotion without necessarily being compelled by them. She describes sensations as information about her condition and resents guilt when it interferes with her judgment. Although she repeatedly identifies herself as emotionless, she also experiences anger, loneliness, pleasure at receiving help, and attachment to remembered companionship 63 173 204 334 444.
Her pursuit of strength eventually gives way to an existential problem: if she cannot be killed, she still needs a reason to live. This search makes human relationships central to her development, culminating in her recognition that humanity cannot be judged solely by its malice 334 509.
Abilities & Skills
Regeneration and Distributed Survival
Hela can reconstruct destroyed tissue and remain alive through separated pieces of herself 66 117.
- Regrows limbs and a severed head, and survives repeated dismemberment 104 117 157.
- Can continue seeing through a detached eyeball 117.
- Confirms that a surviving fragment can replace a destroyed main body; neither body is inherently less “real” 66.
- Regeneration consumes energy. Under extreme depletion, repeated recovery shrinks her body and reduces her fighting strength 143 157 158.
- Fire and powerful explosions are serious threats despite her recovery ability 117.
Shapeshifting and Biological Weapons
Hela reshapes her own cells into disguises, movement structures, and weapons 6 66 214.
- Produces bone blades, whips, spikes, claws, fangs, tentacles, and additional mouths 48 117 252.
- Assumes animal forms and copies human appearances for infiltration 157 161 162 350.
- Separates fingers into tentacles that kill, consume targets, and return nutrients to her body 214.
- Grows gills and functions underwater 316.
- Reproduces structures from blood she has consumed and understood; previously copied blood remains limited by the original sample’s level 193.
Devouring and Energy Assimilation
Consumed flesh supplies nutrients, regeneration, and power 6 192 252.
- Digests human and Variant bodies, including high-level meat used to recover after fighting Ground 192 394.
- Can exceed her body’s safe energy capacity, requiring growth, compression, or redistribution into clones 192 204.
- Does not automatically gain abilities by eating inorganic matter. She can instead store such material inside herself or use it as weaponry 164.
- Retains metallic elements absorbed from Silver Ghost and forms strong metal spikes from them 414.
Clones and Shared Perception
Detached flesh can become an independently moving organism or a complete duplicate 66 192.
- Shares vision with separated organisms and states that the connection has no distance limit 66.
- A fragment can act under her control while also possessing a mind of its own 66.
- Feeding a fragment allows it to grow into another Hela 66.
- Creates the male-presenting clone Xiao Er, who reaches Ten Thousand Stars 192.
- A clone’s available energy depends on what was allocated to it; a hand-derived Hela No. 2 initially possesses only about five percent of the main body’s strength 414.
Symbiosis and Control over Life
Hela’s cells can enhance another body, while her later Source-derived ability allows direct control without implanted cells 181 350.
- Tuote reports that [HeLa Cells] comprising only 0.2 percent of his body already let his muscles exceed their normal limits 181.
- After absorbing Ocean’s Power of the Source, Hela controls Telake and reads information in his brain’s nerve cells 350.
- Greater intelligence or mental power makes a creature harder to control 350.
- Silver Ghost breaks free almost immediately through overwhelming resentment, limiting Hela’s control to a brief interruption 358.
Power of the Source and Souls
Power of the Source changes Hela’s cells and supports abilities beyond ordinary stored physical energy 262 334.
- Sustains the original human Hela’s soul and allows it to operate her body; Hela attributes their compatibility to the body having been washed by her Source power 334.
- Enhances the Judgment Gun’s deconstruction effect 361 362.
- After fusion, accesses the memories and souls of the other Five Calamities 478.
- Rebirth can occur after complete Source annihilation, but may erase a previous incarnation’s memories and identity 340.
Learning, Combat, and Artistic Skills
Hela learns rapidly, though effective use of her abilities requires instruction and experimentation 42 159 181.
- Physical performance: Lifts a hundred-kilogram barbell; improves her hundred-meter time from 15.71 seconds on all fours to 9.66 seconds upright after instruction 40.
- Combat: Excels at hand-to-hand fighting, but initially has poor compatibility with most conventional weapons 42.
- Singing: Quickly memorizes lyrics and impresses recording staff during a sound check 207.
- Drawing: While the human soul controls the body, produces a lifelike portrait of Tang Tang and offers to teach her 287.
- Weakness: Mental power is identified as her weakest basic attribute when she tests the Judgment Gun 361.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Straight blade — Her initial armory choice, described as the only conventional weapon she knows how to use at that point 47.
- Flight cloak — Allows flight; she wears it tied around her waist rather than across her back 173.
- Sky’s feathers — The first enables flight through mental-power activation. She later eats it, then receives five more containing Sky’s Power of the Source 177 450.
- Anti-detection bracelet — Helps conceal her Variant identity; its blue gemstone flickers when Meng Yuan unsuccessfully attempts to sense her realm 168 241.
- Swallowed Battle Armor — Operates suits from within her flesh, combining their shields, cannons, mechanical limbs, and thrusters 221.
- Mouth of the Void — Storage artifact used to hold the objects previously filling her body 361.
- Judgment Gun — Fires invisible, mental-power-driven attacks. Source power turns its deconstruction effect into a weapon capable of destroying half of Silver Ghost’s body; Hela later identifies it as the gun used to wound Ground 361 362 427.
- Serrated blade — Stored inside her body; its killing power increases with the strength of her grip 377 427.
- Mental-power-controlled chains — Can move like tentacles, though Hela dismisses them as junk while sorting her possessions 427.
Relationships
- Human Hela — The girl whose appearance and identity she adopts. Their consciousnesses remain distinct; the Variant temporarily entrusts her body to the girl, later puts her soul to sleep, and eventually resurrects her 334 514.
- Sun Hai — Takes her into his home, cares for her, and oversees her early training while investigating her connection to [HeLa Cell] 20 37 42.
- Xing Lan — Close caretaker and instructor who teaches her everyday skills and shares affectionate companionship with her. Hela consumes her at her dying request 40 144 204 516.
- Keke — Roommate and training companion who relies on “Sister Hela” for reassurance. Her final plea and embrace halt Hela despite their enormous difference in strength 44 60 61 505 508.
- Han Xiaoxiao — Survivor of Hela’s attack, which killed her brother and cost her two limbs. Her presence provokes Hela’s guilt; she later hunts Hela in revenge 63 157 158.
- Tuote — Researcher and subordinate who designs new applications for Hela’s body and teaches her to use her strength more efficiently 181 183.
- Aidan / Blood Scarf — Companion and subordinate who later becomes known as the strongest human mercenary. Recognizes Hela as his former boss when she reveals her identity 188 373 394.
- Xiao Huan — Hallucination Bug named by Hela; accompanies her, searches for useful objects, and frequently travels in a pocket 164 184 394.
- Ye Yiqing — Changes from temporary training ally to enemy and eventual reluctant partner. Hela forces his agreement to cooperate with the Light God Society 50 139 153 334.
- Sky — Fellow Five Calamity who explains her origins, provides Source-bearing feathers, and treats her with unusual warmth 176 177 450.
- Ground — Overwhelming adversary who seals her for five years, recognizes her exceptional growth potential, and later praises her improved combat ability 265 334 377.
- Spirit Shark, Mingsha, and Kai Sha — Sea Shark Dragon companions whom Hela embraces before leaving their community 287 324 334.
- Noah — A human whose happiness draws Hela’s interest and influences her thinking. Her belief that he has deceived her turns that interest into anger 440 444.
