Background / History
Life Before Hela
Aidan grew up in Great Xia under the shadow of his favored older brother. His brother denied knowing him at school, while their parents celebrated his brother’s birthday and forgot his own despite the dates being only one day apart. Cold treatment and ridicule from schoolmates deepened his isolation 188 462.
Games became a refuge because their characters listened to him, cared about his thoughts, and treated him as a friend. After awakening Electronic Fantasy, he stood up to his family and moved alone to the United States. There, he supported himself by playing on other people’s accounts and lived in a small, carefully cleaned rental room 188 463.
Joining Hela
Aidan readily agreed to become Hela’s subordinate, although he later worried that her apparent innocence did not guarantee she would treat him well. Sans encouraged him to make friends rather than rely exclusively on his monster companions 185 188.
His first killing assignment took him to Star Gym, a Night Star front. Previously a shut-in who had never been in a real fight, he struggled to prepare himself for murder. He initially offered the garrison squad a chance to surrender, but recognized their attempted deception and killed its five members 189 190 191.
Hela’s response became a defining moment in his attachment to her: she wrapped her red scarf around his neck, praised him, and told him she liked him. He was overjoyed by the recognition 191.
The City of Sin and His Entertainment Dream
After entering the City of Sin with Hela’s group, Aidan accompanied her to Sound Beauty Entertainment Company. Tewa also signed him as an artist, briefly bringing his dream of debuting within reach 198 206 210.
The experience soon disappointed him. When Director Liu reached toward Hela’s thigh, Aidan smashed a bottle, prompting the director to withdraw his hand. Afterwards, Aidan became withdrawn and said that some things were not as wonderful as he had imagined 212 213.
His distress over a dream he now considered “filthy” brought him back to his monster friends. Goat Mom and Goat Dad comforted him in their pixelated home, affirmed that he would always be their best child, and helped him recover his memories 216.
Death, Resurrection, and Fulan’s Farewell
While helping search for Fuluolan and the other children, Aidan fought alongside Fulan. Their later confrontation with Summer ended with Summer possessing Fulan and destroying Aidan’s pixel heart. Aidan’s health reached zero, and his body dissolved into pixels 228 233 247 248.
In the void after death, Aidan resisted his monster friends’ plan to sacrifice their souls for him. Goat Mom reminded him that he was only eighteen and deserved to live. Among the six human souls gathered for his resurrection, he recognized Fulan and offered to find him another body 258.
Fulan declined, explaining that he was tired and wanted to join Ailin. Before departing, he affirmed Aidan’s kindness and called him his good brother. Frisk subsequently rewarded Aidan’s sincere friendship with the monsters by giving him the genocide-route knife 259 260.
After returning, Aidan confronted Summer and learned that his knife could damage Summer’s source. Ground later revealed himself as Fuluolan through his special reincarnation symbiosis and told Aidan that, with Hela’s cells gone, he was free to choose whether to follow her or return to humanity 260 263.
Five Years Apart
Aidan rescued Xiaojie, Shasha, and Beibei from the Godslaying Technology Company’s ruins. He returned them to the warehouse, supplied phones and access to money, hired a nanny, and said goodbye. He also rescued Weier and freed Tuote from prison 266 269.
Despite losing the symbiotic bond, Aidan remained committed to Hela. During five years spent searching for her, he became a mercenary to support himself. On their reunion, Hela hugged him and told him to stop mercenary work and follow her again 270 374.
He subsequently fought Ground alongside Hela. His knife wounded Ground, but Ground’s gravity and stone forest overwhelmed him; Hela ultimately delivered the fatal shot. Before Ground died, Aidan reassured him that Xiaojie, Beibei, and Shasha were safe and doing well 377 378 379.
Gravekeepers and Final Farewell
After learning that the Light God Society intended to destroy humanity, Aidan questioned whether he would die as well. Nevertheless, he agreed to Hela’s request to fight the Gravekeeper guarding the Tree of Terra, while privately remaining uncertain about opposing the Night Stars 410 411.
He entered the Gravekeepers’ residential area with Lin Wushuang and Yao Di. During the operation, he faced thirteen-year-old Lü Weitian and the Heroic Spirits protecting him. After his pixel heart was cut in half, his determination to fulfill Hela’s expectations drove a further awakening, raising him beyond Human Limit 454 459 462 463 464 465.
In his final conversation with Yao Di, Aidan admitted that he regretted killing for Hela and had confused being valued with being loved. He revealed that he was already dead and that only a remnant soul remained. It dissipated as Yao Di tried unsuccessfully to hold him 473.
Hela wept over his final letter and forbade Ye Yiqing from reviving him. She later understood that his wish to be remembered had come from someone who already wanted to die 474 481.
Appearance
- Build: Very thin; when Hela hugs him after their reunion, she notices his narrow waist and how little flesh she can feel over his chest 374.
- Everyday clothing: Frequently wears a hood or hat and keeps his head lowered. He covers his earrings with his hood to avoid attracting attention 187 189 215.
- Red scarf: Wears the scarf Hela gives him, sometimes pulling it up to hide his face when embarrassed 191 228.
- Ability manifestation: His body flickers and becomes translucent as a red pixel heart emerges from his chest 186.
- Later combat features: Manifests multicolored pixel wings and a dark-blue, flame-like effect over his right eye when using the Eye of Judgment 260 459.
Personality
Aidan is severely socially anxious. Crowds overwhelm him, sustained attention can leave him unable to speak, and he often stammers or avoids eye contact. His combat strength does not eliminate this anxiety: even after reaching Human Limit, ordinary police questioning leaves him visibly nervous 189 266 380 410.
He is acutely sensitive to contempt and rejection, but equally responsive to sincere kindness. Tuote’s consideration earns his gratitude, while Fulan’s affirmation and his monster friends’ parental affection reach him in ways his biological family never did. Frisk recognizes that Aidan has always treated the monsters as real friends rather than disposable game characters 186 188 258 259 260.
His affection for children repeatedly prompts him to help them, even when doing so inconveniences Hela’s group. He worries about their safety, arranges care for them, and explains his attachment simply: perhaps it is because he used to be a child too 200 228 243 266.
His central conflict is between his conscience and his devotion to Hela. Her praise gives him purpose, but he increasingly hates carrying out her killing orders. By the end of his life, he recognizes that his dependence on her approval is not the same as the love he experiences with Yao Di 411 473.
Abilities & Skills
Electronic Fantasy
Aidan’s ability draws on Undertale. He eventually describes it as allowing him to use all the abilities from that game, including close-range combat, ranged attacks, healing, and high-speed movement 453.
- Game-based growth: Playing games increases his realm 233.
- Distinct source: Yao Di also possesses Electronic Fantasy, but hers comes from Minecraft. Aidan cautions that their abilities may therefore differ 453.
- Pixel manifestations: Can produce weapons, attacks, companions, and even a furnished pixelated home 186 187 216.
Pixel Heart and Intangibility
When Electronic Fantasy is active, the floating pixel heart becomes Aidan’s real body. Attacks aimed at his translucent humanoid form pass through without harming him 186.
- Independent movement: Maneuvers the heart through narrow gaps in incoming attacks using mental control 187 377 460.
- Regeneration: Minor damage to the heart can recover automatically; one lost health point regenerates within seconds during his spar with Fulan 187.
- Primary vulnerability: Opponents who identify the heart can target it directly. Its destruction has reduced his health to zero and caused his body to dissolve 247 248 462.
- Pain: His intangible state does not prevent suffering. Sensation is concentrated in the heart, making repeated hits intensely painful 462.
Pixel Attacks and Defenses
Aidan constructs a broad arsenal of pixel weapons and projectiles 186 190 455 462.
- Bones and spears: Creates ground-based traps, volleys, cages, and layered defensive fortifications 186 191 233 461.
- Gaster Blasters: Summons ranged weapons for bombardment, including attacks used against Ground and the Gravekeepers 377 454.
- Other constructs: Uses ghost-like wisps, fireballs, halberds, cleavers, and machetes 190 455 460 462.
- Downward force: Turns the heart blue and forces targets to the ground 187 189 191.
- Defensive limits: Sustained, concentrated attacks can shatter his bone defenses, while Ground’s reinforced stone largely withstands his bombardment 378 462.
Genocide-Route Knife
Frisk gives Aidan a pixel knife after declaring that his genuine kindness toward the monsters has passed the trial 260.
- Source damage: Cuts Summer’s source, inflicting damage that threatens his continued existence 260.
- Erasure: Aidan understands its wounds to erase targets at the source, bypassing defenses and vitality 378.
- Soul cutting: Can strike souls and kill Heroic Spirits that his other attacks initially cannot harm 411 460.
- Projectile interception: Blade light turns incoming diamond fragments into pixels 378.
- Limit: Ground’s Power of the Source suppresses the spreading wound, and his reinforced stone resists the knife’s erosion 378.
Eye of Judgment and Emotional Perception
Aidan can perceive emotions and dishonesty through people’s words and eyes. The Eye of Judgment also allows him to see souls 185 190 411 459.
- Detects Fulan’s wariness and hostility during their early conversation 185.
- Recognizes that the garrison captain’s surrender is false 190.
- Cannot find a lie when Ground identifies himself as Fuluolan 263.
- Sees souls as differently colored pixel hearts and detects the spirits surrounding Lü Weitian 411 459.
Monster Friends
His monster companions keep him company, train with him, offer advice, and fight beside him 187 216 247.
- Independent behavior: They can emerge without being deliberately summoned 187.
- Combat support: Sister Fish, Goat Dad, and Little Goat join his fight against Summer 247.
- Emotional support: Sans encourages him to form friendships, while Goat Mom and Goat Dad provide parental comfort 188 216 258.
- Sacrifice: The monsters surrender their souls to give him another life after Summer kills him 258.
Wings and Resurrection
- Flight: Manifests enormous iridescent pixel wings capable of carrying him rapidly to great altitude 260 266.
- Heart reconstruction: Repeatedly restores his shattered heart during his earlier game-world battle 227.
- “[He refused...]”: After surpassing Human Limit, returns unharmed from otherwise fatal attacks when the pixelated message appears. His opponents perceive this as apparently limitless revival 464 465.
- Final limitation: These feats do not establish permanent immortality; his remnant soul ultimately dissipates 473.
