First Appearance Chapter 18, “Nine-Layer Chaos Restriction”

Background

Daoist Sanqing is the Chaos True God Yuanshi, rather than three independent beings. Grand Supreme Elder Lord and Celestial Worthy of Numinous Treasure are avatars he formed through One Qi Transforms into Three Pure Ones 18.

As the founder of the Daoist Sect, Sanqing belongs to the small group of leaders whose decisions carry greater weight in the Three Realms than the Heavenly Emperor’s nominal authority. His peers include the Three Sovereigns of humanity and Buddha Tathagata 18 22.

Sanqing has accepted only about a dozen disciples, but several have become True Gods or Dao Ancestors. His lineage’s success draws the envy of Dao Father Carefree, whose much larger body of disciples has produced fewer students who satisfy him 26.

Appearance

  • White hair: During the crisis in the Netherworld, Sanqing appears as a white-haired Daoist 76.
  • Taiqing avatar: At Tushita Palace, he appears as an old man of immortal bearing, radiating boundless Dao resonance beside a furnace 18.
  • Horsetail whisk: He holds a whisk when receiving Zhou Qing as a disciple 18.

Personality

Sanqing describes his approach to accepting disciples as following the natural course: once he learns of Zhou Qing’s extraordinary talent and Dao heart, he chooses to teach him without demanding a more elaborate justification. Although openly proud of his disciple, he refuses to take credit for achievements Zhou Qing earned through his own talent and prior foundations 18 27.

Patriarch Bodhi characterizes him as proud and aloof. Sanqing himself distinguishes between respecting Nuwa and finding only a few other major powers worthy of his attention. Nevertheless, he readily acknowledges Bodhi’s superiority in survival techniques and encourages Zhou Qing to learn from him 31 56.

His usual composure gives way when his disciple is threatened. He forcefully removes Zhou Qing from Elder Yuan’s custody and later threatens retaliation against the Seamless Gate if Zhou Qing is harmed. His distrust of Elder Yuan rests on the sense that Yuan’s behavior toward old friends is unnaturally false 56 76.

Abilities & Skills

One Qi Transforms into Three Pure Ones

Sanqing uses this technique to manifest the avatars associated with the Three Pure Ones 18.

  • Grand Supreme Elder Lord and Celestial Worthy of Numinous Treasure are manifestations of Yuanshi, not separate original beings.
  • His Daoist Taiqing avatar wields the Yin Heavenly Dao and is also known as Laozi on Earth 18.

Leader-Level Power

Sanqing stands among the leading combat powers of the Three Realms 18 78.

  • The Three Realms’ leaders can match ordinary Ancestor Gods despite possessing the bodies of True Gods or third-class Ancestor Immortals.
  • Their Dao insights are comparable to those of peak Ancestor Gods 18.
  • Sanqing considers his overall strength greater than Bodhi’s, while admitting that Bodhi far surpasses him in staying alive 31.

Spatial Manipulation and Mass Relocation

Sanqing demonstrates large-scale control when responding to the discovery of Bai Qi’s mine 27.

  • His arrival is accompanied by the surrounding space and time freezing.
  • He reaches into the mountain range and gathers countless enslaved miners into his sleeve.
  • He relocates the miners to nearby Netherworld cities free of nether Qi, retaining Immortal Duohe for Zhou Qing 27.

Heartforce Instruction

Sanqing created Seeking the Dao, a Heartforce cultivation art 21.

  • The technique leads directly to the fourth level of Heartforce.
  • Zhou Qing selects it from the Daoist Sect’s Scripture Pavilion to provide a plausible explanation for Heartforce attainments he already possesses 21.
  • Sanqing later attributes Zhou Qing’s apparent rapid progress to exceptional talent, unaware of that concealment 26.

Equipment / Items

  • Horsetail whisk — Held during Zhou Qing’s initiation at Tushita Palace; no combat function is demonstrated in that scene 18.
  • Ten Thousand Flowers Precious Lotus — A silver Xiantian Supreme Treasure obtained during Sanqing’s travels through the chaos. It suppresses the void and visibly distorts nearby space. Sanqing gives it to Zhou Qing as a first-meeting gift 18.
  • Nine-Layer Chaos Restriction — An opportunity Sanqing obtained in the chaos, contained within the lotus he gives Zhou Qing. Refining its restrictions aids Dao comprehension; Zhou Qing’s Great Dao of the Claw reaches the Great Dao Domain Realm while studying it 18.
  • Xuandu Dao Unification Chapter — A Fiendgod Body Refining method offered to him by Zhou Qing. Sanqing judges its conception inferior to Nuwa’s Inner Contemplation of Freedom Ancestor God Scroll, but its practical details more complete 79 80.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Accepting Taixu

Zhou Qing’s performance at Perfected Taiyi’s Golden Light Cave draws the attention of several Daoist Sect immortals who wish to teach him. Sanqing intervenes and accepts him personally, recognizing both his talent and his Dao heart 18 77.

At Tushita Palace, Sanqing offers three Daoist names: Returning to the Repository, Mystic Subtlety, and Taixu. Zhou Qing chooses Taixu, after which Sanqing presents him with the Ten Thousand Flowers Precious Lotus and explains the value of its Nine-Layer Chaos Restriction 18.

Sanqing subsequently advises Zhou Qing to accept appointment as Great Emperor of Fengdu. After studying the Six Paths of Reincarnation, Zhou Qing concludes that his master likely intended the office to give him access to their profound Daos 23 24.

Bai Qi’s Mine and the Empyrean God Tribulation

After Zhou Qing kills Bai Qi and discovers an Annihilation Dark Gold mine, Sanqing arrives within a few breaths of receiving his message. He praises Zhou Qing’s achievement, frees the enslaved miners, and allows him to take Immortal Duohe away 27.

Sanqing negotiates the mine’s distribution with True God Youdu and Ksitigarbha. The Daoist Sect receives 70%, the Underworld 20%, and the Buddhist Sangha 10%. After consulting Dao Father Carefree, Sanqing awards Zhou Qing 30% of the sect’s share, equivalent to 21% of the total output 30.

He remains in the Netherworld to protect Zhou Qing during his Empyrean God Tribulation. Afterward, he delivers the first chapter of Bodhi’s Time and Space technique and relays Bodhi’s offer: comprehend the Power of Time and Space within three hundred years to receive discipleship and the remaining chapters 30 31.

Ink Bamboo’s Pursuit and Elder Yuan

When Dao Ancestor Ink Bamboo pursues Zhou Qing, Sanqing watches alongside Bodhi and initially urges his friend to intervene. Seeing Zhou Qing evade capture reveals that his disciple has already reached fourth-level Space Power 55.

After Elder Yuan drives Ink Bamboo away and pressures Zhou Qing to become his disciple, Sanqing intervenes. He challenges Yuan’s qualifications to teach a student who ostensibly possesses the same Heartforce level, takes Zhou Qing away, and privately warns him to remain guarded around Yuan 56.

Defending the Six Paths of Reincarnation

During the Seamless Gate’s assault on the Netherworld, Sanqing advances with Suiren and Tathagata to provide aid. Master Huanmu blocks their path, provoking Sanqing’s anger over both the attack and the danger to Zhou Qing 76.

After Zhou Qing defeats Dao Ancestor Demon Hand, Sanqing acknowledges that his disciple’s rise to leader-level strength has exceeded even his expectations. He calls for a response to the Seamless Gate and supports retaliation during the subsequent Hall of Myriad Clans deliberations 77 78.

Following the meeting, Sanqing joins the other leaders in promising support to weaker allied powers. He and Bodhi then bring Zhou Qing to the Nuwa Immortal Realm, where Zhou Qing offers the Xuandu Dao Unification Chapter, a method with potential to help them advance toward Ancestor God cultivation 79 80.

Dao Attainment Ceremony

Sanqing congratulates Zhou Qing on fully comprehending the Heavenly Dao of Destruction and urges him to hold a grand Dao attainment ceremony to strengthen morale before war. He agrees to have the Daoist Sect prepare the event in Fengdu City, scheduled for ten years later, and publicize its disciple selection 99.

At the ceremony, Sanqing praises Ji Ning’s rapid Sword Dao progress. After learning that Ji Ning is a reincarnator from Zhou Qing’s Infinite World, he recognizes that Zhou Qing arranged the selection with Ji Ning in mind 103.
