Background / History

Previous Life and Reincarnation

Ji Ning was an Earthling whose previous life was plagued by terminal illness. He spent considerable time online and was familiar with infinite-flow novels, even imagining that becoming a reincarnator might offer him a healthy body. His parents’ suffering remained important to him: before drinking Meng Po Soup, he recalled his caring father and his mother’s tears as his illness worsened 74 75 82.

In the Underworld, Lord Cui recognized his accumulated merit and Childlike Heart and intended to grant him a favorable reincarnation. Zhou Qing met him at Lord Cui’s residence and bestowed a wisp of Pure Yang primordial Qi. Besides strengthening his soul and future cultivation talent, the gift prevented Meng Po Soup from erasing his memories 74 75.

Lord Cui had intended him to become a heaven-born deva. Zhou Qing instead directed him into the Path of Humans while claiming it was the Path of Devas, believing that familial and romantic love would better suit his temperament. Ji Ning was subsequently reborn into the Ji Clan of the Great Xia World 75 81 101.

The Ji Clan Crisis

The Ji Clan came under pressure from Snowdragon Mountain after Daoist Hanyang traced his grandson Dong Qi’s death to Ji Yichuan. Hanyang’s overwhelming power frightened the clan’s leaders, leaving Ji Ning fearful that they would surrender his father 80 81.

Ji Ninefire entrusted Ji Ning with the immortal-grade Azure Scripture and the divine ability Three Heads and Six Arms. He urged Ji Ning to escape with a Lesser Teleportation Talisman, join a major sect, and eventually return strong enough to save the clan. While Ji Ning agonized over abandoning his family, a mysterious message appeared and transported him into the Infinite World 81.

Life in the Infinite World

Ji Ning entered the Infinite World without recognizing its guide as Zhou Qing, whose avatar had a different appearance. Already possessing Daoist Sanshou’s Water Mansion inheritance and several divine abilities, he became one of its rare lone-wolf reincarnators 82.

Mission rewards accelerated his cultivation. After reaching Peak Wanxiang and developing his Sword Dao, he returned to kill Daoist Hanyang and ended the Ji Clan’s crisis. Later missions yielded the Azure Sea Bright Moon Pearl, enabling him to cultivate a powerful Second Primaltwin 82.

He cultivated a close relationship with the guide by repeatedly offering immortal wine and asking questions. The guide’s advice became a major contributor to his progress. When Ji Ning eventually asked how to leave the Infinite World, he learned of two routes 83:

  • Complete ten consecutive hell-level missions while still mortal.
  • Become an Empyrean God or Celestial Immortal, then complete one hell-level mission.

The hardest mission he had completed at that point was calamity-level, and it had nearly killed him 83.

Celestial Immortal and Disciple Selection

At fifty, Ji Ning’s Second Primaltwin became a Second-Class Celestial Immortal. His reincarnator panel then offered a hell-level mission to become True God Taixu’s disciple. He accepted it as his opportunity to leave the Infinite World 99.

Before departing, he thanked the guide for decades of instruction. During their conversation, he learned that Taixu was the Great Emperor of Fengdu—the same youth who had arranged his reincarnation into the Great Xia World 101.

Ten years later, Ji Ning entered Taixu’s disciple-selection tournament. He defeated Fengyun Wuji and won several hundred matches, attracting the attention of Lü Dongbin, the Heavenly Emperor, and the Xia Emperor. In the final, he narrowly defeated Celestial Immortal Fenglian; their Dao insights were nearly equal, but Ji Ning’s superior golden core and stronger magic power secured his victory 102 103.

Zhou Qing accepted him as his personal disciple. When Ji Ning wondered why his mission had not registered as complete, Zhou Qing revealed that he was also the Infinite World’s creator and its familiar guide. Ji Ning thus discovered that the two figures who had most influenced his life were the same person; his actual release from the Infinite World is not confirmed in this scene 103 104.

Appearance

  • Appears as a youth even while a soul in the Underworld 74.
  • Wears white during the disciple-selection tournament’s final 103.
  • Bears divine markings on his hands associated with the Star-Plucking Hand 82.

Personality

Lord Cui identifies Ji Ning as possessing a Childlike Heart, while Zhou Qing recognizes his kindness through the merit surrounding his soul. His attachment to family is equally pronounced: he is distressed by his parents’ willingness to die together and resists the idea of leaving his clan in danger 74 81.

Ji Ning is adaptable and independent, becoming a successful lone-wolf reincarnator despite initially resenting his recruitment. He is also persistent and practical, repeatedly bringing wine to the guide to obtain instruction. Although he seeks freedom from the Infinite World, he feels genuine sadness at the prospect of parting from the man he regards as both teacher and friend 82 83 101.

He remains courteous in victory. After defeating Fenglian, he formally salutes him and privately acknowledges that their understanding of the Dao is almost equal 103.
