His compassion is backed by stubborn resolve. He refuses to surrender Kiyohiko even when threatened with exclusion from the Demon Slayer Corps and treatment as a traitor. He later challenges Sanemi’s judgment despite the difference in their authority 8 12.

Final Selection
Kiyohiko initially seeks Tanjiro because he expects the protagonist’s gentle personality to make forming a rewarding bond easy. He eventually finds Tanjiro confronting the Hand Demon beside two fallen candidates 1 4.
During their joint battle, Kiyohiko shields Tanjiro from a cage of arms and is impaled. He then holds the Hand Demon in place, allowing Tanjiro to follow the Opening Thread and behead it 5 6.
When healing the wounded candidates drives Kiyohiko toward a loss of control, Tanjiro refuses his request for execution. Instead, he knocks him unconscious, gags him, and organizes his transport away from the approaching sunlight 6 7.
Defense of Kiyohiko
At the selection’s finish line, Tanjiro rejects the Ubuyashiki twins’ demand to kill or abandon Kiyohiko. Zenitsu and the rescued candidates join him in protecting the demon, prompting the matter to be referred to Kagaya Ubuyashiki 8.
Before the Hashira, Tanjiro argues that Kiyohiko could have eaten the candidates to recover but chose to save them instead. He attempts to stop Sanemi from acting against Kiyohiko, only to be restrained by the Kakushi 12.
After Kagaya permits Kiyohiko to live under Shinobu’s supervision, Tanjiro embraces him in relief. He is then instructed to return to training and later bids Kiyohiko farewell 13 14.
