Appearance
- Petite build: She uses her small body to shield Kiyohiko from stray sunlight while escorting him through the mansion 18.
- Twin tails: Her hair is repeatedly described in twin tails, including when they are tied crookedly during her anxious breakfast visit 27 33.
- Work clothing: She wears an apron while cooking and doing laundry, and a uniform during rehabilitation training 21 44 48.
- Stern expression: Her habitual frown and sharp manner remain visible even when she is serving refreshments or tending to Kiyohiko 33 36.
Personality
Aoi is outspoken, easily provoked, and strict about cleanliness and patient routines. She repeatedly objects to being called “Sunflower Seed” and scolds Kiyohiko for dirtying the hallway, startling the kitchen staff, and criticizing Shinobu. Her actions are often gentler than her words: she slows down to protect him from sunlight and consistently feeds him despite the extra work his appetite creates 18 21 33.
She is deeply loyal to Shinobu, defending her methods and becoming emotional when explaining how Kanae’s death changed her. That respect also carries apprehension: after giving away Shinobu’s pickled ginger, Aoi initially blames Kiyohiko rather than admit her mistake, then feels guilty and tries to compensate him with an unusually generous breakfast 22 24 27.
Aoi struggles with fear and doubts the value of her supporting role. Kiyohiko’s cold touch recalls the demons of Final Selection, prompting an involuntary recoil that leaves her ashamed. His reassurance that maintaining the mansion is its own battlefield helps her relax and take pride in her work 36.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Supervising Kiyohiko
Aoi introduces herself as Kiyohiko’s new daily supervisor, brings his prescribed breakfast, and escorts him to Shinobu’s darkened dojo. Although irritated by his teasing, she adjusts her pace and shields him from sunlight. When he tries to retreat from training, she pushes him inside and closes the door 18 19.
After a poison test leaves him hungry, Kiyohiko startles her by appearing upside down at the kitchen entrance. While feeding him, Aoi explains that Shinobu’s constant smile follows Kanae’s death and that her reliance on poison stems from being unable to decapitate demons. This gives Kiyohiko context for Shinobu’s behavior 21 22.
The Pickled-Ginger Misunderstanding
Aoi gives Kiyohiko Shinobu’s pickled ginger, then tells Shinobu that he took it himself. Feeling guilty, she brings him a lavish breakfast and asks whether Shinobu punished him. His reference to Shinobu having “laid hands” on him means a forehead flick, but Aoi imagines a much harsher punishment and believes he endured it to protect her lie 24 27.
Her vague questions lead Kiyohiko and Shinobu to think she witnessed their private rooftop conversation. When Shinobu questions her directly, Aoi confesses about the ginger and confirms that she saw nothing on the roof. Shinobu forgives her for giving away the pickles 28 29.
Becoming “Sunshine Girl”
When their fingers accidentally touch, Aoi recoils from Kiyohiko’s unnatural coldness and calls herself useless. He responds by pointing out how much injured Corps members depend on her work, finally calling her “the sunshine of this place.” Her mood lifts, and she adopts “Sunshine Girl” while teasing him over Shinobu’s bitter daifuku 36.
Later Mansion Activities
Aoi arranges for craftsmen to make Kiyohiko’s transport box at Shinobu’s request, keeping the preparations secret from him. She also witnesses him transfer a critically injured Slayer’s wounds onto himself and subsequently directs the emergency room’s cleanup 40 41 42 49.
During a later rehabilitation game, she unsuccessfully tries to warn Kiyohiko that Shinobu is standing behind him as he boasts about taking revenge on her. Aoi leaves the dojo before the ensuing confrontation 48 49.
Relationships
- Kiyohiko — Patient, training partner, and frequent source of exasperation. Their relationship develops from wary supervision into affectionate bickering, with his reassurance helping her recognize the importance of her work 18 27 33 36.
- Shinobu Kocho — Her superior, addressed as “Lady Shinobu.” Aoi follows her instructions, defends her against criticism, and notices the improvement in her mood around Kiyohiko 18 22 33.
- Kanae Kocho — Aoi remembers her as gentle and always smiling, and explains how Shinobu changed after her death 22.
- Kiyo Terauchi, Sumi Nakahara, and Naho Takada — Younger mansion helpers whom Aoi directs during meal preparation and looks after during shared meals 21 39.
- Kanao Tsuyuri — Fellow Butterfly Mansion resident. Both are relieved when Shinobu and Kiyohiko reconcile after an argument 47.
Bond Value with Kiyohiko
These values measure Aoi’s relationship with Kiyohiko through his system, not her own combat strength.

| −10 | 18 | Initial detection during her introduction as his supervisor. |
| 10 | 24 | Reported after the pickled-ginger incident. |
| 20 | 27 | Rises when she believes Shinobu punished him over the ginger. |
| 60 | 27 | Rises again when she concludes that he protected her lie. |
| 90 | 36 | Reached after he affirms the value of her work and calls her the mansion’s sunshine. |
