Background / History
Village Childhood and Recruitment
Han Li grew up in an impoverished farming household of seven. The fourth of five children, he had two older brothers, an older sister, and a younger sister. He admired his eldest brother’s blacksmith apprenticeship and hoped to obtain a respectable trade, earn money, and improve his family’s circumstances 1.
His Third Uncle, a restaurant manager and outer disciple of the Seven Mysteries Sect, recommended him for the sect’s recruitment examination. Han Li left home at ten, intending to return once he had earned enough money. During the Bone Refining Cliff test, he persevered despite exhaustion and injured hands and knees, but could not climb beyond the lowest knot of the final rope before the deadline 1 4.
Training under Doctor Mo
Doctor Mo accepted Han Li and Zhang Tie as Registered Disciples, teaching them medicine, literacy, and a secret Mnemonic. Unlike Zhang Tie, Han Li produced the energy required by the method and became Doctor Mo’s personal disciple. His master supplied precious medicines and a private cultivation chamber, but prohibited him from learning other martial arts 6 8 9 10.
Money initially drove his training: Doctor Mo promised to double his monthly allowance with every advancement. Han Li sent most of his silver home, helping his family escape its former poverty. Over time, cultivation itself became his central pursuit, while years of separation made his family’s letters feel increasingly distant and formal 14 22 24.
The Bottle and Li Feiyu
Han Li discovered a heavy green bottle after accidentally kicking it beneath fallen leaves. Its nighttime absorption of white light revealed its unusual nature, but he put it aside for years while concentrating on cultivation. Later experiments showed that its green liquid could rapidly mature medicinal herbs, giving him access to ingredients unavailable even to Doctor Mo 10 13 14 25 26.
During Doctor Mo’s absence, Han Li rescued Li Feiyu from an attack caused by the Marrow Extraction Pill. Li Feiyu initially threatened to kill him to protect the secret, then promised repayment after Han Li swore silence. Their arrangement developed into an exchange of pain-relieving medicine for martial instruction from the Seven Ultimates Hall 20 21 33.
Doctor Mo’s Coercion
Han Li gradually became suspicious of Doctor Mo’s intense interest in his cultivation. When his master returned from gathering herbs, Han Li concealed his recent progress. Doctor Mo’s mysterious attendant immobilized him, and Doctor Mo confiscated his concealed tube of Five Poisons Water 15 27 28 29 32.
Doctor Mo then forced him to swallow a Corpse Worm Pill, claiming it would kill him without an antidote after a year. Threats against his family compelled Han Li to promise that he would reach the fourth layer within that time, although he had already done so. Recognizing that cleverness alone could not protect him, Han Li began preparing more effective means of resistance 31 32.
Secret Training and Confrontation
Through Li Feiyu, Han Li obtained the neglected Blinking Sword Manual. He also overheard Wild Wolf Gang spies discussing a plot against the sect and passed the information to Li Feiyu, leaving his friend to pursue the resulting merit. With only months remaining before Doctor Mo’s deadline, Han Li memorized the manual, commissioned specialized equipment, and withdrew to a concealed ravine to practice selected techniques 34 38 39 41 42.
On returning, Han Li demanded an antidote before allowing Doctor Mo to examine him. Doctor Mo attacked after confirming his cultivation, beginning a fight in which Han Li used concealment, sword attacks, evasive footwork, and reflected sunlight to counter a stronger opponent. By their subsequent standoff, Han Li claimed that a concealed spike had poisoned Doctor Mo with Entwining Fragrant Silk; the confrontation remained unresolved 44 45 46 47 50.
Appearance
- Complexion and features: Dark-skinned and unremarkable, with the appearance of an ordinary farm boy rather than a handsome or distinguished young master 1 14.
- Adolescent bearing: Described at fourteen as quiet and steadfast 14.
- Hair: Black; left loose and disheveled during his secluded training 43.
- Training appearance: Emerges from practicing in the thorn forest with shredded clothing and small iron bells attached to his neck, waist, arms, thighs, and ankles 43.
Personality
Han Li is intelligent and unusually mature despite his childhood nickname. His determination is evident in his refusal to abandon the entrance climb and his willingness to cultivate through exhausting, sometimes injurious practice. Poverty makes him highly conscious of money: his early ambition is not fame, but a secure livelihood and a better life for his family 1 4 7.
Experience makes him increasingly guarded and calculating. Bribery, favoritism, and mistreatment by wealthy disciples undermine his childhood admiration for the sect’s powerful figures. Li Feiyu’s attempt to silence him after being rescued becomes a decisive lesson: Han Li resolves not to intervene again without sufficient benefit and confidence in his safety 12 21.
His pragmatism does not entirely erase his empathy. He avoids questioning Li Feiyu about the painful reasons behind his use of the Marrow Extraction Pill, yet deliberately dispenses medicine in yearly supplies so that Li Feiyu will remember his debt. He likewise remains attached enough to his family that threats against them force his submission to Doctor Mo 22 31.
Han Li favors preparation over direct confrontation. After his first defeat by Doctor Mo, he deliberately trains himself to remain alert in unfamiliar surroundings. Before their later meeting, he rehearses possible dangers and responses in detail; even Doctor Mo becomes alarmed by the thoroughness of his traps 38 43 50.
Abilities & Skills
Eternal Spring Art
A cultivation method that strengthens Han Li’s spirit, mind, and senses more noticeably than his physical combat power 43.
- Enhances vision, hearing, smell, and touch sufficiently to detect minute activity across several dozen zhang 28 35.
- Grants perfect visual recall at the fifth layer, enabling him to replay and analyze observed martial techniques 34.
- Can dispel the fatigue of an entire night spent studying 40.
- Produces energy Han Li calls Pseudo True Qi: it circulates through his meridians but does not demonstrate the striking power of ordinary martial True Qi 43.
- His limited aptitude makes later progress heavily dependent on spirit medicines; he suspects further layers exist but lacks their instructions 43.
Blinking Swordsmanship
An assassination art built around killing with a single well-timed sword strike rather than overpowering an opponent 39.
- Uses terrain, surrounding objects, lighting, and visual illusions to expose or create openings 39.
- Suits Han Li’s exceptional senses and lack of conventional refined internal force 37 39.
- Requires years for full mastery; under his deadline, he selects only techniques that can become useful quickly 40 41.
- Applies its principles in traps involving an open doorway and reflected sunlight during his confrontation with Doctor Mo 50.
Gossamer Smoke Steps
An evasive movement technique that Han Li brings to practical proficiency through dangerous training in a thorn forest 43.
- Allows silent, elusive movement through narrow gaps between thorn-covered branches 43.
- Practiced with iron bells attached to multiple parts of his body 43.
- Enables him to slip out of Doctor Mo’s attempted capture after losing his sword 47.
Concealment Techniques
Han Li combines the Bone-Softening Art, Breath-Concealing Art, and Disguise and Concealment Technique for ambushes 46.
- Uses all three together, wearing floor-colored clothing, to conceal himself before a nearly successful sword thrust at Doctor Mo 46.
- Begins his secluded training with the Bone-Softening Art, which he considers the hardest technique to practice 42.
Medicine and Poison Preparation
Doctor Mo gives Han Li extensive medical instruction and unrestricted access to his medical books 9.
- Uses silver needles and medicine to stabilize Li Feiyu during a Marrow Extraction Pill attack 20 21.
- Prepares a year’s supply of pain-relieving medicine in an afternoon 22.
- Produces rare cultivation, healing, and antidote medicines from bottle-matured herbs, though his early attempts include costly failures 27 28.
- Manufactures Five Poisons Water and obtains the formula for Entwining Fragrant Silk from Doctor Mo’s books 32 50.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Mysterious green bottle: A heavy, leaf-patterned bottle that gathers white light at night and produces green liquid. Han Li keeps its properties secret, including from Doctor Mo 10 13 26 27.
- Herb maturation: Undiluted liquid turns a ginseng plant into the equivalent of a hundred-year-old specimen overnight. Repeated applications can further increase medicinal age 26.
- Dilution: Spreading diluted liquid across many plants produces a smaller increase in each plant’s medicinal age 26.
- Replenishment and storage: Clear weather permits its light-gathering phenomenon to resume; attempts to preserve the liquid in other containers fail 25 26.
- Danger: Liquid tested on rabbits causes them to swell and explode, whereas medicines made from treated herbs produce no observed poisoning in later rabbit tests 24 25.
- Yellow Dragon Pills and Golden Marrow Pills: Rare medicines central to his rapid advancement beyond his cultivation bottleneck 34.
- Clear Spirit Powder and Essence Nourishing Pills: Additional medicines prepared and stored alongside his cultivation pills 27 28.
- Short swords: Commissions several designs with secret alterations. The blade drawn against Doctor Mo is about a foot long, sharp, and green-gleaming 41 45.
- Iron bells: Commissioned for his preparations and worn during movement training 41 43.
- Five Poisons Water tube: A concealed sleeve weapon confiscated before he can use it in his first confrontation with Doctor Mo 29 32.
- Poisoned concealed spike: Han Li claims it has wounded Doctor Mo and delivered Entwining Fragrant Silk during their later fight 50.
- Safety talisman: Kept in a small leather pouch against his chest and associated with memories of home 22 23.
