Background / History
Admission to Divine Hand Valley
Zhang Tie nearly completed the Seven Mysteries Sect’s cliff-climbing entrance test, following immediately behind Han Li on the rope. Although neither reached the summit in time, Hall Master Yue recognized their endurance and granted them another assessment in half a year rather than dismissing them. Doctor Mo subsequently selected both boys to live and work in Divine Hand Valley 5.
As Doctor Mo’s Registered Disciples, they studied medicinal herbs and medicine in the mornings, then attended lessons in literacy, meridians, acupoints, and basic martial training. A month later, Doctor Mo taught them a secret nameless Mnemonic and made progress in it the condition for remaining under his tutelage 6.
Despite diligent practice, Zhang Tie achieved nothing with the Mnemonic. At the assessment, Doctor Mo initially appeared ready to reject him, but reconsidered after examining his Root Bone. Zhang Tie immediately accepted the offer of another cultivation method and passed the assessment alongside Han Li. As formal disciples, the boys received separate cottages 8 9.
Disappearance
After mastering the third layer of the Elephant Armor Technique, Zhang Tie abruptly vanished. His farewell letter stated that he intended to make his way in the jianghu. The departure caused an uproar in the sect; Han Li later heard that Doctor Mo had intervened to spare Zhang Tie’s recommender and relatives from repercussions 15.
Han Li grieved for several days and felt that something about the disappearance was wrong. He later speculated that Zhang Tie might have fled out of fear of training the fourth layer, but the circumstances remained unresolved 15.
Appearance
- Appeared noticeably older than Han Li when they first became acquainted 6.
- Wore a thin green cloth shirt when returning from training; he was sweating heavily, with faint steam rising from his body 11.
Personality
Zhang Tie was helpful and accustomed to physical work, telling Han Li that remaining idle made him uneasy. On their first evening in Divine Hand Valley, he fetched two buns for Han Li after realizing that his companion had missed dinner. He later brought meals to Han Li’s room while Han Li’s injured foot healed 6 13.
He was diligent even when his efforts produced no results. Han Li regarded his cultivation of the nameless Mnemonic as conscientious, and later admired his persistence through the Elephant Armor Technique’s punishing training. Initially attracted by the technique’s promised power, Zhang Tie came to dread it and envied what he believed was Han Li’s comparatively painless meditation practice 8 9 13.
Abilities & Skills
Elephant Armor Technique
A rare, nine-layer martial art taught to him by Doctor Mo because it suited his Root Bone 8 9.
- Strength and toughness: After two months, Zhang Tie was substantially stronger and better able to withstand blows 10.
- Demonstrated carrying capacity: Could carry a bucket weighing several dozen jin in each hand while racing up and down the mountain. He regularly filled Divine Hand Valley’s large water vats 11.
- Training methods: Endured waterfall impacts, foul-smelling medicinal baths, and beatings with Doctor Mo’s wooden staff intended to temper his sinews and bones 9 13.
- Physical cost: Training left his body red and swollen, making contact with his wooden bed painful and disrupting his sleep 13.
- Advancement limits: The technique’s difficulty and suffering increased sharply from the fourth layer onward. Zhang Tie is only documented as mastering the third layer; its reputed ninth-layer resistance to weapons, water, and fire was not an ability he demonstrated 9 15.
Foundational Training
- Studied basic medicinal knowledge under Doctor Mo 6.
- Learned reading, writing, meridian and acupoint locations, horse stance, and striking exercises alongside other recruits 6.
- Could not cultivate the nameless Mnemonic despite sustained effort; Doctor Mo attributed this failure to unsuitable aptitude 7 8.
Relationships
- Han Li — Fellow disciple and close friend, brought together by similar backgrounds and temperaments. Han Li obtained injury medicine for Zhang Tie, considered asking Doctor Mo to change his technique, and developed an effective pain-relief prescription specifically for him. That prescription later provided a basis for helping Li Feiyu 9 10 11 21.
- Doctor Mo — Master and instructor. Allowed Zhang Tie to remain after his failure with the Mnemonic, taught him the Elephant Armor Technique, and personally administered its painful conditioning. He reportedly intervened on Zhang Tie’s behalf after the disappearance 8 9 13 15.
