Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Martial power restored through an unnamed secret method 30 Recounted retrospectively: after his betrayal, Mo followed a method from a mysterious book to recover his power. It also caused rapid aging, with Evil Qi draining his vitality. No named realm or level is given.

Background / History

Mo Juren established himself as the feared Ghost Hand in Lan Province, carving out his own territory and exerting influence over both righteous and underworld factions. After being betrayed, he discovered a strange book in a mysterious location. Its method restored his martial power but left him prematurely aged and steadily losing vitality 30.

Several years before accepting Han Li, Mo saved Seven Mysteries Sect Master Wang Lu from otherwise fatal injuries sustained in an enemy ambush. Impressed by both his medicine and martial arts, Wang Lu invited him into the sect as an Attendant and had a residence built for him in a secluded valley 6.

Mo subsequently searched hundreds of children for someone capable of practicing the Eternal Spring Art. According to his explanation to Han Li, the art required a Spirit Root constitution, and its fourth-layer Qi could help reverse his condition 30.

Appearance

Doctor Mo appears to be a sickly old man despite being only thirty-seven. His premature aging becomes increasingly pronounced as his remaining vitality declines 28 30 44.

  • Hands: Dry, callused skin, later described as withered 8 45.
  • Complexion: Initially sallow; nearly lifeless and ashen after his lengthy absence from the valley 15 28.
  • Eyes: Usually murky or half closed, but capable of a sharp, intimidating gleam 29 30.
  • Illness: Persistent coughing that grows more frequent and prolonged over time 5 15.
  • Black Qi: A shifting layer appears across his face when he openly turns against Han Li 29.
  • Later appearance: By their decisive meeting, he looks indistinguishable from a seventy-year-old man 44.

Personality

Mo is reserved, calculating, and highly observant. His usual expressionlessness conceals intense anticipation, suspicion, and fear. He studies Han Li’s reactions closely and deliberately applies psychological pressure, believing that people reveal the truth when they lose control of their thoughts 8 31.

His generosity toward Han Li is substantial but self-interested: he spends precious medicines, money, and influence to accelerate the boy’s cultivation. Once persuasion proves insufficient, he uses poison and threats against Han Li’s family. He explicitly admits that he never truly regarded Han Li as his disciple 9 14 29 31.

Mo’s confidence in his martial experience repeatedly becomes contempt for his younger opponent. He dislikes Han Li’s composed demeanor and initially dismisses his techniques as petty tricks. After narrowly surviving several traps, however, he abandons that contempt and treats Han Li with extreme caution 46 47 49 50.

Abilities & Skills

Medicine and Pharmacology

Mo is an accomplished physician whose teaching gives Han Li a strong foundation in diagnosis, treatment, medicinal preparation, and rare formulas 6 9 27.

  • Saved Wang Lu from grave injuries and treated Han Li’s damaged meridians without lasting complications 6 9.
  • Prepared an external-injury powder that rapidly eased swelling and pain 11.
  • Freely explained rare medicinal formulas, although missing ingredients prevented him from producing some of the finished medicines himself 27.
  • Hid the formula for Entwining Fragrant Silk in one of his medical books; Han Li later used it against him 50.

Demonic Silver Hand

Mo’s signature martial technique transforms his arms and hands, swelling them and turning their skin silver-white with a metallic sheen 47.

  • Produces powerful palm attacks and a dense defensive screen 47.
  • Resists blades and spears, allowing him to seize Han Li’s sword by its edge 49.
  • Protects the areas he actively guards, but does not prevent Han Li from grazing his neck with a concealed spike 49.

Internal Force and Acupoint Techniques

  • Air-Splitting Palms: Expels Han Li’s smoke screen through the room’s open doorway 46.
  • Force-infused shout: Temporarily disrupts Han Li’s balance, vision, and bodily control 45.
  • Acupoint sealing: Immobilizes Han Li during their first confrontation; a later attempt fails against Han Li’s hardened chest 29 45.
  • Bleeding control: Seals blood vessels near his neck wound with two fingers 49.
  • Breath control: Can refrain from breathing for three to five quarters of an hour, allowing him to avoid inhaling suspicious smoke 46.

Movement and Combat Senses

  • So Close Yet Worlds Apart: Rapidly closes the distance to Han Li 48.
  • Evasive flexibility: Uses an iron plank bridge to avoid an abdominal thrust and an extreme neck movement to escape a fatal strike 46 49.
  • Sound and wind detection: Tracks incoming attacks while temporarily blinded 49.
  • Danger awareness: Detects a faint trace of murderous intent, though he cannot immediately locate Han Li’s concealed position 46.

Cultivation Instruction and Examination

  • Teaches Han Li the initially nameless mnemonic later identified as the Eternal Spring Art 6 30.
  • Teaches Zhang Tie the Elephant Armor Technique, supported by medicinal baths and staff beatings intended to temper his body 9 13.
  • Examines Han Li’s Qi through physical contact and pulse-taking rather than reliably sensing his cultivation at a distance 8 15.
  • Fails to detect Han Li’s fourth-layer breakthrough when Han Li deliberately suppresses his Qi to resemble the third layer 28 29.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Longevity Scripture: A book on cultivating character and prolonging life that Mo studies obsessively during his disciples’ early training 7.
  • Medical library: Includes treatment texts, rare medicinal formulas, and the concealed Entwining Fragrant Silk formula 9 27 50.
  • Corpse Worm Pill: A white pill kept in a carved sandalwood box. Mo forces Han Li to swallow it, claiming it will hatch and kill him unless counteracted after one year 31.
  • Black antidote pill: Given to Han Li before the final examination; Han Li checks his body and finds that the Corpse Worm Pill has dissolved 44.
  • Cloud-Winged Bird: A yellow bird sent to monitor Han Li during his secluded training 41 42.
  • Powdered beast bones: Used to draw a strange formation while Mo consults Yu Zitong; its purpose is not disclosed in these events 42.

Relationships

  • Han Li — Personal disciple and intended means of restoring his vitality. Their outward master–disciple relationship deteriorates into coercion and lethal conflict 8 30 31 45.
  • Zhang Tie — Disciple taught the Elephant Armor Technique after failing to cultivate the nameless mnemonic. His training includes painful medicinal baths and beatings 8 9 13.
  • Wang Lu — Sect master whose life Mo saved; secured Mo’s position and residence within the Seven Mysteries Sect 6.
  • Yu Zitong — A voice communicating within Mo’s mind and the source of a cultivation method Mo distrusts. Mo promises him benefits if their plan succeeds 42.
  • Mysterious attendant — A towering, hooded figure brought back to Divine Hand Valley. He remains silent, follows Mo closely, and displays extraordinary endurance; Mo evades questions about his identity 28 29 32 34.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Taking Disciples

Mo selects Han Li and Zhang Tie from the newly admitted registered disciples, ostensibly needing help refining medicine and gathering herbs. He begins their medical education, then teaches them a secret mnemonic under a six-month assessment 5 6.

When Han Li produces the desired Qi, Mo promotes him to personal disciple. He secures a private cultivation chamber, supplies valuable medicines, and later doubles Han Li’s monthly silver for each advancement. He also forbids other martial training, claiming it would hinder the mnemonic 8 9 10 14.

Declining Health and Open Coercion

After his medicines are exhausted and Han Li reports a year without progress, Mo leaves to gather herbs. He returns nearly a year later with the mysterious attendant and a markedly worse complexion 15 28.

Mo then restrains Han Li, confiscates his concealed poison tube, and reveals his identity and premature aging. He claims that killing an old enemy during his journey consumed so much vitality that he has only one year left. To force Han Li to reach the Eternal Spring Art’s fourth layer within that time, he administers the Corpse Worm Pill and threatens the Han family 29 30 31.

Preparations and Duel

When Han Li leaves a note announcing four months of secluded cultivation, Mo sends the Cloud-Winged Bird to watch him. Meanwhile, he argues with Yu Zitong over their cultivation method and prepares a beast-bone formation 41 42.

At their next meeting, Mo supplies the antidote but attacks immediately after confirming Han Li’s fourth-layer Qi. Han Li escapes the attempted restraint, beginning their fight 44 45.

Mo survives a concealed floor-level ambush, sunlight reflected into his eyes, and a hidden spike that grazes his neck. By the ensuing standoff, he no longer underestimates Han Li. Han Li then claims the spike carried Entwining Fragrant Silk, alarming Mo despite his confidence in his own medical knowledge 46 49 50.
