Background / History

Disciple of the Eight Gods Pavilion

Cangsong accepted Bai Junhao and Su Mingyue as disciples after Song Qi left to train in the Central Province. He considered Bai Junhao slightly more gifted than Mingyue and nurtured both in the hope that they could eventually catch up with Song Qi 45.

Eager to meet his master's expectations, Bai Junhao rushed his cultivation and nearly suffered Qi Deviation. Cangsong intervened before it fully occurred, but Bai Junhao's meridians were damaged. He searched ancient texts and consulted the pavilion's elders until he learned that Buddhist Vajra, the Heavenly Buddha Temple's foremost body-tempering technique, could repair and strengthen his meridians 45.

Duel at Heavenly Peace Peak

While Cangsong was in seclusion, Bai Junhao formally challenged the Heavenly Buddha Temple's Buddhist son. He wagered Cangsong's signature Nine Heavens Sword Instruction against Buddhist Vajra. The temple accepted, and the duel took place at Heavenly Peace Peak 45.

Bai Junhao won despite suffering grave injuries and brought Buddhist Vajra back to the Eight Gods Pavilion. Soon afterward, the temple announced that its Buddhist son had been crippled, while people within the pavilion spread rumors that Bai Junhao had suffered Qi Deviation. The Heavenly Buddha Temple rallied other sects to demand his public execution; only the Clear Bathing Palace refused to join the pressure campaign 45.

Defection

Despite Cangsong's opposition, the immortal sects decided that Bai Junhao would lose his cultivation and remain confined to the Eight Gods Pavilion even if he cultivated again. After hearing the decision, Bai Junhao returned to his cave abode, changed into a new scholar's robe, and crushed a token that opened a pitch-black vortex. He escaped through it, vowing to return and make those responsible pay 46.

His defection to the demonic path became public the following day. The escape also exposed a breach in the pavilion's protective barriers, prompting Cangsong to replace them all 46.

Personality

Bai Junhao's pride and impatience preceded his defection. According to Cangsong, he relied on his exceptional talent, sought quick results, and pushed himself dangerously hard to fulfill his master's hopes. Once injured, he pursued a remedy obsessively and arranged the duel while Cangsong was unavailable to stop him 45.

His punishment left him deeply distrustful of the righteous sects. He argues that their moral principles would collapse under the pressure of survival, claiming that trapped righteous disciples would slaughter the Eight Gods Pavilion's members if doing so bought their freedom. Being reminded of his past remains particularly painful to him 40 41.

His attachment to Su Mingyue initially survives their opposing allegiances: he offers to spare her because of their long association. After she escapes the Azure Seclusion Plain, however, he warns that she will receive no further chance. His order to kill every retreating righteous disciple within fifty li demonstrates the ruthlessness of his revenge 39 41.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship

  • Fights with a longsword and initially exchanges several moves with Su Mingyue without either gaining the upper hand 40.
  • Keeps her occupied throughout the array battle; she subsequently recognizes that he is stronger and deliberately preventing her from intervening elsewhere 40.
  • Challenges Song Qi directly, but his array-powered sword attack is shattered by Song Qi's counterattack 41.

Heavenly Demon Great Array Control

  • Orders He Xuan to begin preparing the array while the opposing forces clash 39.
  • Uses its accumulated spiritual power to form an enormous sword against Song Qi 41.
  • Relies on an array that drains spiritual power, absorbs battlefield blood, isolates its prisoners, and blocks outside assistance; He Xuan, rather than Bai Junhao, performs its setup 39 40.
  • Cannot prevent Song Qi from breaking the spiritual-power sword and shattering the array 41.

Military Command and Planning

  • Directs the demonic elders during the Azure Seclusion Plain ambush and draws Su Mingyue away from the battlefield's center 39 40.
  • Commands the fifty-li pursuit following the righteous retreat 41.
  • Instructs Ye Gong to reach Golden Core, gain influence, and monitor the elders during the ten-year preparation period 47.

Equipment / Items

  • Longsword — His weapon against Su Mingyue and the focus through which he directs the array's power into a giant sword 40 41.
  • Nascent Soul Breaking Pill — Awarded by the Holy Lord for his battlefield contributions; expected to give him a chance of reaching Nascent Soul within ten years 42.
  • Escape token — A previously unused token kept in his Storage Bag. Crushing it opened the vortex through which he fled the Eight Gods Pavilion 46.
  • Buddhist Vajra — Obtained through his victory over the Buddhist son and brought back to the pavilion. He sought it to repair his damaged meridians; the account does not confirm his subsequent mastery 45.

Relationships

  • Cangsong — Former master. Cangsong valued his talent, tried to protect him from the sects' demands, and continued to blame himself for failing to prevent his defection 45 46.
  • Su Mingyue — Senior sister and the Eight Gods Pavilion's Grand Elder. He once listened to her closely, but rejects her offer to return and later fights her at Azure Seclusion Plain 39 40 45.
  • Song Qi — Former pavilion contemporary and battlefield opponent. Bai Junhao knew his reputation but had never fought him before their clash at Azure Seclusion Plain 41.
  • He Xuan — Demonic associate who prepares the Heavenly Demon Great Array on his command 39.
  • Holy Lord — Superior who orders the withdrawal and rewards him with a Nascent Soul Breaking Pill. Bai Junhao resents the recall until he receives the reward 42.
  • Ye Gong — Disciple who reports on righteous sect preparations. Bai Junhao directs his cultivation and efforts to gain influence 47.
  • Heavenly Buddha Temple — Central enemy in his past. Its demand for punishment after his duel helped precipitate his break with the righteous path 45 46.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Azure Seclusion Plain

Bai Junhao confronts Su Mingyue roughly a century after leaving the righteous path and refuses reconciliation. He summons demonic reinforcements and holds the righteous elders in battle while He Xuan seals the plain with the Heavenly Demon Great Array 39.

With the trapped disciples losing spiritual power, he occupies Su Mingyue and taunts her about the righteousness of her allies. Qin Yi's summoning of Song Qi overturns the trap: Song Qi destroys Bai Junhao's giant sword and breaks the array, allowing the righteous forces to retreat. Bai Junhao responds by ordering a fifty-li pursuit 40 41.

Ten-Year Ceasefire

After Song Qi challenges the Holy Lord, the demonic army withdraws and both sides prepare for a decisive battle in ten years. Although the ambush failed to annihilate its targets, the Holy Lord recognizes Bai Junhao's contributions with a Nascent Soul Breaking Pill 42.

At Vast Righteousness Mountain, Bai Junhao receives Ye Gong's report about the righteous sects' preparations. He assigns his disciple to cultivate, acquire influence, and watch the elders before activating his abode's protective formation and entering seclusion 47.
