Background / History
Ancient Jade Lake Saintess
Yang Yi was Jade Lake’s Saintess ten thousand years before Su Yu’s era. A recognized genius of the Eastern Wasteland, she reached Great Accomplishment King during a cultivation journey spanning centuries. She loved Zhang Lin, the Fifth Generation Source Heavenly Master, and entered Purple Mountain seeking him. Her inscription announcing that search remained visible ten thousand years later 143 148 191.
Su Yu discovered her sealed in Source while exploring Purple Mountain with Jiang Taixu and took the block away 16.
Revival and Confinement
Divine Spring Liquid alone failed to revive Yang Yi, so Su Yu used his last Sacred Fruit. She regained consciousness within a quarter of an hour, but he immediately suppressed her with the Devouring Heaven Demon Jar and bound her primordial spirit with an Emperor Qi Thought Restriction to protect his secrets 64.
Learning that Zhang Lin remained alive restored her desire to live. Unable to leave and indebted for her revival, she accepted the position of medicine garden maid. She nevertheless privately resolved to resist any attempt to make her submit sexually 64 66.
Her work included watering Immortal Divine Medicines, tending medicinal fields, and planting spiritual flora. Daily opportunities for Dao comprehension and access to Divine Spring water accelerated her cultivation. Despite her captivity, she gradually began treating the Chaos Small World as her home 139.
Sainthood and Return to Purple Mountain
Yang Yi became an instructor to the women living in Su Yu’s medicine garden, guiding Yan Ruyu and Qin Yao and teaching Zixia the Western Emperor Scripture. She later shared that scripture with Su Yu after he demonstrated possession of Great Emperor Wushi’s inheritance 80 103 138.
After attaining sainthood, she helped relocate the Void Small World using borrowed Emperor Weapons. Before returning to Purple Mountain, she opened a Bitter Sea for Fifth Master Zhang and left him an ancient medicine to prolong his life 141 142 143.
Inside Purple Mountain, Yang Yi appealed to the red-haired Zhang Lin while Su Yu restrained him with the Demon Jar. Her voice briefly stirred his memories, but neither could restore his senses. Overcome with grief, she declared that the Zhang Lin she loved had died ten thousand years earlier. Su Yu carried her out and promised to protect his descendant and help him when sufficiently powerful 144.
Freedom and Partnership with Su Yu
After their Purple Mountain journey, Su Yu removed Yang Yi’s Emperor Qi Thought Restriction. He also passed on three of the Nine Secrets, eight imperial scriptures, and a hundred strands of Black and Yellow Qi. Their relationship subsequently developed beyond captivity into affection 153.
The pair plundered the Immortal Abode Small World, collecting medicines, divine terrain, and a Chaos Pure Land. Yang Yi transported entire mountains and lakes with the Bronze Emperor Coffin, leaving an abyss three thousand zhang deep. She later wielded the Devouring Heaven Demon Jar against opponents carrying the Taihuang Sword and Jiuli Diagram 151 153 154.
By this period, Su Yu regarded Yang Yi as the person he trusted most, placing her ahead of Jiang Taixu 187.
Ziwei Campaign
Yang Yi repaired the Five-Colored Altar used for Su Yu’s journey to Ziwei Ancient Star. Her knowledge of imperial scriptures and complete Extreme Dao formation patterns made her a formidable Saint even before that expedition 216 218.
On Ziwei, she fought the divine dynasty’s ancient ancestor, deployed formations derived from imperial inheritances, and joined Su Yu in destroying a Saint King’s spirit body. She also subdued Great Accomplishment Kings and captured their weapons using the Lihuo Divine Furnace 223 224 226 244.
After obtaining the Taiyin True Scripture, she copied it for Jiang Tingting and studied it alongside the Taiyang Scripture. Her reflections on Su Yu, past lives, and others’ fates deepened her understanding of karma and preceded her breakthrough to Saint Fifth Heaven 283.
Later Activities
Yang Yi continued assisting Su Yu’s forces, wielding the Green Lotus Emperor Weapon against a Saint King and helping secure the submission of captured Ancient Saints. She also received the rescued descendants of the Human Emperor of the Moon, explaining their heritage and ordering them to stop kneeling before her 293 296 307.
She later brought the unconscious Jiangzhu’er to Mother Ye on Flying Snow Island. There, she explained the dangerous imbalance between the seven daughters’ pure yin and Ye Yu’s pure yang. She also maintained contact with Zhang Lin through a letter delivered by Su Yu 456 473.
By a later visit from Su Yu, Yang Yi was residing in the Jade Lake Secret Realm in Great Luo Heaven. Her eventual consumption of an immortal fruit transformed her aptitude and enabled her rise to the Quasi-Emperor Realm 583 699.
Appearance
Yang Yi is portrayed as an otherworldly beauty whose usual white clothing contrasts with her silver combat armor 103 190.
- Hair: Turns purple after her comprehension of the Qilin Immortal Medicine; later descriptions range from waist-length pale-purple hair to ankle-length hair shimmering with starlight 103 227 293.
- Complexion: Lustrous, jade-white skin, repeatedly compared to an exquisitely carved jade figure 103 227.
- Usual dress: Plain white robes or gowns; later appears in a white dress inlaid with jade and patterned in purple 77 456.
- Accessories: A purple-gold hairpin and, on Flying Snow Island, a silver moon crown 195 456.
- Battle attire: A silver garment that separates into fitted armor, giving her the appearance of a goddess of war 190 223.
Personality
Yang Yi is reserved and composed, recovering her calm even while restrained immediately after revival. Su Yu initially considers her an “ice woman,” but she shows a gentler manner toward those she teaches 64 77 80.
Her devotion to Zhang Lin survives ten thousand years of separation. Even after reluctantly accepting her confinement, rescuing him remains her overriding concern; she is prepared to sacrifice herself for that chance 138.
She is compassionate toward people in vulnerable positions. She comforts Zixia, sympathizes with Yu Zi after learning that she too carries an Emperor Qi Thought Restriction, and reacts with pity and anger to the treatment of the Taiyin descendants 103 192 307.
As she grows closer to Su Yu, Yang Yi becomes more openly teasing and critical of his excuses for pursuing women. Her affection does not erase her discomfort with his conduct or with sharing intimate situations alongside younger Jade Lake women 192 196 583.
