Background / History

In his previous life, Su Yu was an orphan who struggled through university in poverty. He had recently turned twenty-two and passed an examination for a county-office position before that life ended. With few attachments left behind, he quickly accepted his new circumstances 1.

He awakened among corpses in an unfamiliar body, carrying a chipped purple jade jue carved with a ghostly face. After absorbing the original owner’s fragmented memories, he learned that the body also bore the surname Su. He recognized his surroundings as the Ruthless One’s Dao grounds in the Cloudbreak Mountains, where the Devouring Heaven Demon Lid had been unearthed 1 2.

His knowledge of the original timeline became a major advantage: he pursued the Wushi Emperor Jade, anticipated the Green Lotus Emperor Weapon’s appearance, and prepared for the future Road to Immortality and Dark Turmoil. He also arranged protection and resources for Ye Fan’s parents as partial repayment of his perceived karmic debt to the Ruthless Great Emperor 7 13 192 320.

Appearance

  • Build and features: Tall and slender, with exceptionally handsome features, sword-like brows, and clear eyes repeatedly described as containing stars or galaxies 33 129 137.
  • Hair: Usually long and black, worn loose or tied with a gold or jade ribbon. Its described length ranges from his waist to his ankles 33 37 137 165.
  • Cultivation marks: Bears sword, bell, or six-pointed-star sword marks between his brows at different points in his cultivation 129 137 289.
  • Aura: Frequently surrounded by five-colored divine light, Chaos Qi, or luminous chains of Dao laws 30 46 268.
  • Clothing: Wears outfits including black phoenix robes embroidered with gold, purple-gold True Dragon Dao robes, and silver robes 65 268 287.
  • Later ancient-era appearance: Awakens with long silver hair and torn, bloodstained battle robes 731.

Personality

Su Yu is adaptable, calculating, and skilled at building useful connections. His experience as a county committee cadre informs his understanding of hierarchy: after saving the Divine Silkworm Princess, he deliberately presents his lineage as proof that he is worth cultivating a relationship with. He likewise uses the Ji Family’s backing, marriage negotiations, medicines, and inherited knowledge to strengthen his position 23 67 113 278.

His kindness is selective rather than universal. He rescues Jiang Tingting and her grandfather, refuses to take Ye Fan’s Bodhi Seed while Ye Fan is near death, and provides valuable cultivation resources to companions. At the same time, he uses destructive soul searches, mental restrictions, deception, and coercion when they serve his aims 13 47 66 198 211 230.

His romantic attachments combine genuine affection with possessiveness and ambition. He acknowledges having coerced Yan Ruyu, and later recalls choosing to forcibly prevent the Divine Silkworm Princess from leaving. Other relationships begin partly as attempts to obtain cultivation benefits or powerful allies 174 211 278 591.

Protecting his family eventually becomes as important to him as attaining eternity. After confronting the consequences of a cultivator’s defeat, he resolves to protect his loved ones even if the world regards him as a demon. His later reflections favor fidelity to his own heart over conventional judgments of right and wrong, while rejecting a path that would dissolve his individuality into heaven and earth 309 470.
