Background / History

Adopting Fang Yi

Ying Xuanzi found Fang Yi as a baby during an outing and raised him as both his adopted son and disciple. A jade token bearing a yin-yang symbol was found with the child. Ying Xuanzi investigated its origins for years without discovering its source, eventually returning it to Fang Yi 15 21 28.

He also knew that Ying Huanhuan was a reincarnator. When Fang Yi noticed her unusual nature as a child, Ying Xuanzi confirmed it but instructed him to keep the matter between father and son. Neither initially told Huanhuan herself 16 27.

Zhou Tong and the Yuan Sect

Zhou Tong was Ying Xuanzi’s most outstanding disciple and the one he considered most likely to reach Reincarnation. After Zhou Tong apparently died at the Yuan Sect, Ying Xuanzi went there seeking an explanation. The Heaven, Earth and Human Three Yuan Masters forced him to withdraw, arguing that Zhou Tong had killed three of their elders and challenging whether the Dao Sect intended to start a war 15.

Unable to secure justice, Ying Xuanzi felt unworthy of his position and stopped residing in the sect master’s hall. His failure to protect Zhou Tong remained a lasting source of guilt 15 53.

He later acted on Fang Yi’s warning about further Yuan Sect schemes, preparing life-saving measures for Dao Sect disciples before a Sect Competition. Those precautions helped Wang Jie and her companions survive, although Wang Jie suffered serious injuries 17 36.

Protecting the Reincarnated Ancient Masters

Fang Yi brought Jiang Yinyin to the Dao Sect after accepting her as a disciple on Ying Xuanzi’s behalf. Learning that she was likely the reincarnation of the Lord of Life and Death, Ying Xuanzi recognized both her importance and the danger of attracting factions stronger than the Dao Sect. Nevertheless, he formally accepted her and undertook to protect her 14 15.

Ying Huanhuan’s partial awakening subsequently revealed that her previous incarnation was the Ice Master. Although he had long known she was a reincarnator, the identity alarmed him: her ancient enemies were the Yimo, whose hostility would not disappear with reincarnation. He continued to regard her as his daughter regardless of her past 27 29.

For Jiang Yinyin, he favored delaying deliberate memory awakening until she reached Nirvana. Besides her physical readiness, he wanted her to develop lasting emotional ties to the Dao Sect before recovering her former identity 29.

Strengthening the Dao Sect

Fang Yi gave Ying Xuanzi cultivation insights intended to help him reach Reincarnation and protect the Dao Sect against the Yuan Sect. Ying Xuanzi accepted instruction from his own disciple and later gained further reincarnation insight from Yimo Pills refined by Fang Yi 21 29 30.

He supported Fang Yi’s arrangement with the Great Desolation Tablet, concealed the disciples’ comprehension of the Great Desolation Scripture, and offered to seek a Myriad Talisman Heavenly Heart to help Gu Mo advance. The tablet’s agreement to protect the sect reduced his fear that an enemy might lure him away before attacking 31 33 34 44.

He also helped establish contact with the Immortal Sacred Whale Clan. After Mu Lan agreed to remain at the Dao Sect, Ying Xuanzi arranged his accommodation near Daoxuan Peak and dispatched Elder Qian with a message for the clan 43 46.

Sect Exchange and the Stillness Divine Tablet

Ying Xuanzi approved the proposed exchange in the Ten Thousand Beast Mountain Range and took responsibility for finalizing arrangements with the Palace Master of Taiqing Palace. He required both daughters to participate, while Fang Yi would be absent 58.

After revealing his progress to Touching Reincarnation, he explained his earlier encounter with the Stillness Divine Tablet. Unable to secure it himself, he passed a trace of its Qi to Fang Yi. When Fang Yi later prepared to travel to Yimo City and search for the tablet, Ying Xuanzi lent him the Heavenly Phoenix Zither for protection 58 59 66.

Personality

Ying Xuanzi is cautious, particularly when the Dao Sect’s survival is at stake. He restricts knowledge of the reincarnated Ancient Masters and the Yimo beneath the Great Desolation Tablet, fearing that even an accidental disclosure could bring catastrophe. His decision to delay a full Reincarnation breakthrough until after the exchange reflects the same preference for preparation 31 58.

His restraint has limits where his children are concerned. Haunted by Zhou Tong’s apparent death, he promises not to allow Fang Yi to suffer the same fate. He later resolves that he will no longer sacrifice his son for the “greater good” if the Yuan Sect attacks 15 29.

Within the family, he is affectionate, easily exasperated, and frequently drawn into teasing exchanges with Fang Yi. He takes pride in his adopted son’s accomplishments but is far less comfortable with Fang Yi pursuing both daughters. Despite his authority, he admits little ability to change their feelings 20 22 29 60.
