Background / History
Childhood at the Dao Sect
Ying Xiaoxiao grew up and cultivated alongside Ying Huanhuan and Fang Yi, whom Ying Xuanzi had adopted. Both sisters supported Fang Yi’s insistence on retaining the surname Fang rather than taking the surname Ying. During their childhood training, Fang Yi regularly put up the sisters’ long hair to keep it from interfering with cultivation 9 17.
The three also played at being husband and wife before Ying Xuanzi directed them toward cultivation. Ying Huanhuan usually claimed the wife’s role, leaving Xiaoxiao to play the wife’s older sister; Xiaoxiao later recalled this as an early example of Huanhuan’s possessiveness toward Fang Yi 63.
Testing the Second Origin Art
After Fang Yi returned from his travels, Xiaoxiao admitted that she might lack the talent to comprehend his inheritance. He encouraged her to learn the Second Origin Art and reassured her that she did not need to shoulder the pressure of avenging Zhou Tong and Wang Jie alone 17.
Xiaoxiao nevertheless volunteered to test the newly derived art at the Nirvana Realm. Ying Xuanzi initially preferred a Life Profound Realm elder as the first tester, but she argued that making the technique usable by Nirvana disciples could help them survive their tribulations. Its battlefield emotions proved difficult for her to suppress until Fang Yi intervened with his blood 19 20.
She later taught the art to Ying Huanhuan, prepared medicinal herbs to alleviate its effects, and advised her to seek Fang Yi’s blood if the strain became unbearable 25.
Cultivation Setbacks and Fang Yi’s Guidance
Learning that both her younger sister and Jiang Yinyin were reincarnations of ancient masters intensified Xiaoxiao’s insecurity. Although she received three levels of the Immortal Heaven Derivation Technique from Mu Lan, she initially failed to master even its first level 45 47 48.
Fang Yi took her aside after Mu Lan noticed her distress. She admitted that she feared being unable to help when the Dao Sect faced the Yimo. With her consent, Fang Yi used the Heart Seal Method to improve her understanding of his human-adapted Immortal Heaven and Earth Scripture. During their mental contact, she openly expressed her feelings for him 49 50.
Taiqing Palace Exchange Preparations
- Receiving Ling Qingzhu: Informed Fang Yi of her arrival and joined the exchange discussions in the sect master’s hall 53.
- Questioning the risks: Raised concerns about the danger of the proposed exchange before Fang Yi endorsed exposing disciples to real combat 54.
- Reporting the proposal: Accompanied Fang Yi to explain the Ten Thousand Beast Mountain Range exchange to Ying Xuanzi, who required both sisters to participate 58.
- Before Yimo City: Warned Fang Yi that Yimo City was unsafe and opposed Huanhuan accompanying him. During his five-day delay, she continued seeking his help with the Immortal Heaven and Earth Scripture 66.
Appearance
- Build: Tall and slender, resembling Ying Huanhuan 50.
- Face and bearing: Beautiful, with a cooler and more aloof expression than her younger sister 17 50.
- Hair: Long enough to be coiled up with a hairpin 17.
- Clothing: Wears dark robes when Fang Yi visits her beside the Pill River 17.
Personality
Xiaoxiao is reserved, disciplined, and more likely to inspire respect than the easy affection associated with Ying Huanhuan. She often conceals her feelings behind a composed exterior, including enduring the Second Origin Art’s painful emotional backlash without drawing attention to it 20 50.
Her sense of responsibility drives her to accept risks rather than leave the Dao Sect’s burdens entirely to Ying Xuanzi and Fang Yi. Wang Jie’s grave injuries further increase the pressure she places on herself as the eldest senior sister. Her frustration with her talent stems chiefly from fearing that she will be unable to protect or support those close to her 19 49 50.
Although protective of Fang Yi and wary of Ling Qingzhu, she rejects treating him as anyone’s possession. She repeatedly tells Huanhuan that restricting his relationships would only push him away. Her restraint does not make her unquestioning: she recognizes that Fang Yi’s account of helping Ling Qingzhu omits something and demands that he speak with her afterward 55 63 64.
Her warmer side emerges around those she trusts. She teases Fang Yi with the nickname “Fang Yiyi,” celebrates her successful scripture comprehension openly, and sharply objects when Ying Xuanzi suggests asking Fang Yi for more blood 17 22 33.
