Background / History
Yun Yao was an orphan whose master, Yun Yin, also served as a father figure. Yun Yin was the previous sect master of the Pure Void Sect and was killed by Shen Qingyuan 19.
Before dying, Yun Yin invoked Shen Qingyuan’s debt of gratitude and secured her agreement to perform three tasks for Yun Yao, provided they did not harm her interests. Although Yun Yao addresses her as “Martial Aunt,” Shen Qingyuan states that she and Yun Yin were never fellow disciples and that she never had a master 17 19.
Yun Yao also gave Shen Qingyuan Supreme Mystery Peak. She later spared him in the secret realm to repay that separate favor, rather than to fulfill the final task owed under Yun Yin’s arrangement. According to Shen Qingyuan, Yun Yao avoids requesting the last task because he knows she will kill him once it is completed. His death at someone else’s hands would likewise end her obligation 19.
Appearance
- Qin Chuan includes Yun Yao among the handsome men surrounding Gu Xiran, describing the group as having swordlike brows, starry eyes, and sharply sculpted features 21.
Personality
Yun Yao is intensely protective of his disciples, particularly Gu Xiran. He rejects Xuanyang’s attempts to reprimand her and repeatedly tries to intervene when his disciples suffer in competitions. His enforcement of sect rules is selective: he invokes the prohibition on interference against Xuanyang while attempting to break it himself when Gu Xiran, Pei Xuan, or Jiang Lin is endangered 7 23 24 29 38.
His attachment to his disciples is closely tied to his concern for his own authority and reputation. When Pei Xuan and Xie An are accused of disrespecting their martial uncle, he ultimately forces them to apologize because ignoring the charge would undermine the hierarchy supporting his position. Their subsequent public mutilation enrages him partly because of the humiliation it brings him as their master and the sect’s leader 21 27 31.
Yun Yao is willing to retreat before superior power or coordinated opposition. He begs Shen Qingyuan for mercy when she suppresses him, and reminders of her strength repeatedly deter him from attacking Qin Chuan. Nevertheless, he secretly covets her Glazed Immaculate Physique and intends to refine her into a resource for his own cultivation 17 29 32.
Abilities & Skills
Mahayana Cultivation
- Suppressive pressure: Silences Qin Chuan and Jin Pang with his aura and forces Pei Xuan and Xie An to kneel 21.
- Resistance to battle aftershocks: Withstands the spillover from Shen Qingyuan’s confrontation with heavenly lightning while the others present are knocked down 17.
- Combat: Attacks fiercely when Xuanyang blocks his attempt to rescue Pei Xuan, but cannot quickly break through the combined obstruction of Xuanyang, the grand elder, and Jin Feng 30.
- Limit: Shen Qingyuan’s Tribulation Transcendence pressure forces him to prostrate himself 17.
Healing and Spiritual Manipulation
- Frees Gu Xiran and draws the dying Xie An to his side, then heals Xie An sufficiently to keep him alive 17.
- Retrieves Jiang Lin after his defeat and communicates instructions to Elder Chu by long-distance voice transmission 39.
Protective Sword Qi
- Provides Pei Xuan with life-saving sword qi. Pei Xuan attempts to use it against Qin Chuan, but loses his arm and storage ring before he can do so 29.
- The Golden Light Sword is identified as a sword art restricted to Yun Yao’s lineage; Pei Xuan uses it during the martial competition 28 29.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
| Item | Use or disposition |
|---|---|
| Defensive magic treasure | Given to Gu Xiran; capable of blocking a full-powered late Golden Core strike. It shatters while saving her from Qin Chuan’s Heavenly Dipper Demon-Breaking Sword 8. |
| Three supreme-grade Heavenly Origin Rejuvenation Pills | Paid to Qin Chuan as compensation during the dispute involving Pei Xuan and Xie An 21. |
| A drop of thousand-year earth spirit milk | Included in the same compensation payment 21. |
| Spirit Ascension Fruit, magic treasure, and token | Awarded to Qin Chuan for winning the martial competition. Yun Yao had selected the principal treasures with Gu Xiran in mind 31. |
| Limb-regenerating spiritual medicine | Given to Pei Xuan rather than Xie An, provoking Xie An’s resentment 32. |
Relationships
Master and Disciples
- Yun Yin — Master and father figure. His deathbed arrangement leaves Shen Qingyuan owing tasks to Yun Yao 19.
- Gu Xiran — Beloved youngest disciple. Yun Yao defends her against Xuanyang, supplies protective treasures, and prepares competition rewards intending that she ultimately receive them 7 8 20 32.
- Pei Xuan — First disciple and the sect’s eldest senior brother. Yun Yao places great hopes in him and prioritizes his recovery when only one stalk of regenerative medicine is available 21 32.

- He pays Qin Chuan and Jin Pang one thousand mid-grade spirit stones each over a false Nascent Soul wolf demon left in the realm by an elder under his authority, protecting that elder from further consequences 20.
Inner-Sect Martial Competition
- Yun Yao initially defends Pei Xuan against accusations of betraying the sect and secretly suppresses Qin Chuan and Jin Pang. Opposition from the elders forces him to make Pei Xuan and Xie An kneel, apologize, and compensate Qin Chuan 21.
- The grand elder and Jin Feng arrange for Qin Chuan to face Gu Xiran. Yun Yao attempts to rescue her from Qin Chuan’s repeated slaps but is restrained by the competition rules and the threat of Shen Qingyuan’s retaliation 23.
- Pei Xuan’s brutal matches against Gu Xiwan and Chu Zhan escalate Yun Yao’s conflict with Xuanyang. A wider brawl follows, during which Xie An is castrated; Yun Yao’s attempted retaliation against Jin Pang and Wang Sang is stopped 24 27.
- During the final, Yun Yao reprimands Jiang Lin for giving Pei Xuan outside advice, then personally warns Pei Xuan of danger. The grand elder condemns this interference 28.
- Xuanyang, Jin Feng, and the grand elder prevent him from rescuing Pei Xuan as Qin Chuan defeats and castrates him. Yun Yao disputes Qin Chuan’s entitlement to first place but is ultimately pressured into handing over the prizes 29 30 31.
Alchemy Competition and Internal Rift
- Yun Yao had prepared the first-place pill furnace for Gu Xiran, expecting Xie An to win it and pass it to her. Xie An’s injuries prevent him from competing, and Jin Pang takes first place instead 32.
- Leaving the competition, Yun Yao privately resolves to kill Jin Pang, Zhang Daoyuan, Jin Feng, and Qin Chuan. Thinking of Qin Chuan’s master also brings his desire to refine Shen Qingyuan to the surface 32.
- His preferential treatment of Pei Xuan and protection of Yun Qian deepen Xie An’s resentment, creating a rift within the master-disciple group 34.
Formation Competition
- Yun Yao repeatedly promotes Jiang Lin as a prospective Dao companion for Chu Ling’er while secretly promising to support him against Qin Chuan 35 37.

- Jiang Lin loses and suffers a dog attack that leaves him castrated. After the grand elder mocks him, Yun Yao smashes a table, takes Jiang Lin away, and instructs Elder Chu to oversee the rest of the competition 39.
