Unease! A Warning
"Watch out!"
Long Han's voice alerted Poison Fairy to a zombie lunging at her face.
Long Han struck in time and tore it to pieces. Under the effects of the poison gas, zombies with lower cultivation struggled to recover quickly. The higher their cultivation, the faster they revived.
"Thanks!"
With that, Poison Fairy continued circulating her spiritual power to disperse the poison gas around her.
"Does this poison gas seem a little different?"
Poison Fairy had sensed a change in the poison gas drifting through the air.
"Oh? What have you noticed, Miss Poison Fairy?"
Long Han asked upon hearing this.
Poison Fairy shook her head. "I can't quite put my finger on it."
"Let's hurry, or we might attract more zombie hordes."
Poison Fairy sped up considerably, while Long Han dealt with every zombie that came charging at her.
The subtle change in the poison gas also made Poison Fairy sense trouble.
Two hours later,
"All right, let's go back to the city gate and set up the formation!"
With the poison gas dispersed, the two quickly flew back to the city gate.
"Poison, disperse! Formation, rise!"
Poison Fairy formed a Method Formula with her hands. Before long, a barrier covered a hundred-li radius around the city center.
"Phew! It's finally done. Let's go."
After wiping away their sweat, the two returned to the city.
Ye Zichen had also come to the city gate by then and met the two of them.
Long Han bowed first.
"What brought you here?" Poison Fairy asked.
"I had nothing to do, so I went for a walk," Ye Zichen said casually.
"Then if you had so much time, why didn't you come help us?"
Poison Fairy was furious. Why did this man never play by the rules?
"I don't need those things."
Ye Zichen answered.
"Fine, fine, fine. You're the best," Poison Fairy said dismissively.
Then she put on a serious face and said, "When I was dealing with the poison gas just now, I noticed it seemed to have changed subtly."
"I have a bad feeling about it. I don't know what the Corpse King is researching, either."
Poison Fairy was also puzzled. For the past few decades, the Corpse King had made no final attack on the Western Continent's remaining territory. Aside from the occasional small corpse tide, things had been extremely quiet, and she didn't know what it was preparing.
"The Corpse King reached Late-Stage Half-Immortal a hundred years ago, yet it has shown no intention of swallowing up the Western Continent and then attacking the other continents. Now that the poison gas has changed, I think it's making a move, or he has already reached Peak Half-Immortal."
Poison Fairy was deeply worried. If that were true, things would be troublesome. Even though they were both Late-Stage Half-Immortals, with the poison gas bolstering the Corpse King,
Poison Fairy might not have been able to fight it. If it had now reached the peak, that would be even more impossible.
"Don't worry too much, Miss Poison Fairy. Everything will get better," Long Han comforted her.
Listening to Poison Fairy's thoughts, Ye Zichen felt she did have a brain after all. "It seems your brain is still good for something."
"Who are you talking about?! I'm as clever as ice and snow!"
Poison Fairy shot back angrily.
Ye Zichen had also sensed the changes in the Western Continent and had wanted to come out and take a look. He had met the two of them here.
Since Poison Fairy had already sensed it, Ye Zichen thought he might as well leave this matter to her.
"This seat has a word of warning for you. Trouble is coming your way."
Ye Zichen gave Poison Fairy a warning. Since she was the key figure in saving the Western Continent, he would let her kick up a fuss.
For now, Ye Zichen would be a spectator. Having come this far, it would be no fun not to keep watching.
"My trouble? What? What do you know?"
Poison Fairy was utterly bewildered. Ye Zichen seemed increasingly mysterious, and she was curious about where he had come from. He wore a stern face every day, yet he had actually been kind enough to warn her.
Ye Zichen said no more. He had already conveyed his goodwill to her.
"Fine, don't tell me! I'm in this city now, so if trouble comes, I'll drag you down with me. Hmph!"
Poison Fairy stamped her foot and ran off in anger.
"Young Master Ye."
"That bug has woken up. Just wait and watch the show."
Ye Zichen watched Poison Fairy leave and spoke with amusement.
"Yes."
Long Han never argued with Ye Zichen's decisions.
Before absolute strength, all plots and schemes were but empty contrivances. Watching the show really meant just watching the show.
Meanwhile,
Poison Fairy had run all the way home in a huff. Sitting down in a chair, she calmed herself.
"What trouble could it be?"
Poison Fairy was puzzled.
Poison Fairy thought of the change in the poison gas and felt that, for now, it was the only thing that could count as trouble.
"Could it be that the Corpse King is finally going to make a move?"
"If that's the case, I need to prepare shelter for the people in the city first."
Though that ice-block face spoke unpleasantly, the safety of both herself and the city was at stake, so she had to calm down and think.
"Alas, I'd better hurry and make arrangements for the people."
Poison Fairy's face was full of worry as she took out the protective talisman her mother had given her at the end.
"Mother... I'll do my best!"
She tightened her grip on the talisman once more, then went out.
She came to the area toward the middle and rear of the city, where there were two temporary shelters, one aboveground and one underground.
The city's barriers currently consisted of the newly erected outer barrier, the inner barrier protecting the city, and this final shelter barrier.
All the barriers extended deep underground, forming spheres that protected the city's residents in layer upon layer.
Poison Fairy reinforced the barrier here once again. With this reinforcement, it could not only withstand the poison gas but also a full-strength strike from a Late-Stage Half-Immortal.
Because she had not reached Peak Half-Immortal, this was already the sturdiest barrier she could make at present.
She then projected her voice throughout the city.
"Everyone, there has been a change outside. Please make your way to the shelter within the barrier toward the middle and rear of the city today or tomorrow. Once it's safe, I'll let everyone know when you can return to your homes."
After notifying all the residents to evacuate to the shelter, Poison Fairy hovered in the air and began observing their situation.
"Did everyone hear that? Hurry and pack up so we can go."
"Child, hurry home and meet up with your parents."
"Grandpa, let me help you inside."
"Dear, hold the child tight. I'll pack our things."
In the streets, everyone began packing up their stalls in an orderly fashion.
Adults and children also returned home and began packing. The other cultivators began helping the common people evacuate as well.
Seeing that the residents were evacuating in an orderly manner without panicking, Poison Fairy relaxed too. Such efficiency was enough to show how much everyone trusted her.
"This city will get better!"
Gazing into the distance at the world beyond the barrier, Poison Fairy's eyes were filled with coldness.
