Background / History

Childhood and Life on Mount Yunkui

As a child, Xiaoguang received osmanthus cake from a black-haired young man whom she later hoped to find again. After meeting Lu Yingheng, she notices similarities between him and her remembered benefactor, but their identity remains unconfirmed 68.

Yijiang arranged for Xiaoguang to become Yixuan’s disciple after an expert predicted that she would face a calamity and needed that master-disciple relationship to survive it. Despite spending years at Mount Yunkui, Xiaoguang rarely sees her wandering, frequently absent master and instead follows Yijiang from time to time 48 49.

Her life is largely confined to her courtyard, with Xiaobai as her constant companion. Fellow disciples visit at a set time each month, while her brother Ye Shiyuan frequently leaves to search for a solution to her situation; the precise problem is not explained in these passages 65 66 70.

Trip Down the Mountain

After overhearing Yijiang and Yixuan discussing the Dragon Emperor’s possible survival, Xiaoguang accidentally reveals her hiding place and flees down the mountain. She decides not to interfere in the sect master’s private affairs and spends her rare outing sampling food at Chenghui Terrace 49.

A bookstore’s promises of sweet romance and satisfying adventures persuade her to buy Dragon Raja. Its tragic third volume leaves her crying over Erii, whose confinement reminds her of her own restricted life 50 62.

Sheltering Lu Yingheng

Lu Yingheng deliberately chooses Xiaoguang as his first contact on returning to Mount Yunkui, considering her kinder and easier to approach than Yijiang or Yixuan. He wounds himself with Fury and stages a collapse in her courtyard immediately after she jokes about a destined partner falling from the sky 62.

Xiaoguang carries him inside and bandages his wound with old clothes. His appearance and osmanthus fragrance distract and fluster her, while she worries that his supposed pursuers might endanger the sect. Unknown to her, his Succubus Physique and Animal Affinity are intensifying her attraction 63.

The following morning, he threatens her with dragon claws, claims amnesia, and introduces himself as Wang Xing. Her indignation turns to deference when he produces Mount Yunkui’s gilded elder’s token. Believing his secrecy is meant to protect the sect, she agrees not to inform Yijiang and allows him to remain in her room 64 65.

When Ju Fufu, Ye Shiyuan, and Pan Yinhu visit, Xiaoguang struggles to conceal her guest. Ye Shiyuan searches her wardrobe, but Lu Yingheng has already escaped notice through Word Spirit: Meishō. He later explains his invisibility to her 66 67.

Growing Romantic Attachment

Xiaoguang persuades Lu Yingheng to fly her down the mountain. During the flight, she wonders whether he is her childhood benefactor and apologizes for asking questions about his supposedly lost memories. Following Xiaobai’s advice, she kisses his cheek to cheer him up, startling him enough that they plunge from the sky 67 68.

She subsequently interprets his gift of leftover osmanthus cake as a thoughtful romantic gesture, despite his insistence that he merely could not finish it. Back at her courtyard, his magically blooming osmanthus tree eases her distress over being confined, and she begins to confess her feelings 69 70.

Vivian’s phone call interrupts the confession. Hearing “Brother Yingheng” makes Xiaoguang question both his relationship with the caller and his claimed name. His explanation that Vivian is his sister restores Xiaoguang’s hope, but he still has not explained the name discrepancy by the following day; she chooses not to press him 71 72.

Appearance

Xiaoguang is a brown-haired girl with a sweet appearance. Lu Yingheng repeatedly finds her expressions and mannerisms endearing, even when she tries to look fierce 64 68.

Her reserved public image conceals an excitable, sensitive girl who enjoys food, novels, and opportunities to leave the mountain. Erii’s fate affects her particularly strongly because she recognizes her own loneliness and lack of freedom in the character 49 50 62.

She longs for companionship and readily imagines romantic significance in her encounters with Lu Yingheng. His supernatural charm reinforces this tendency: she interprets his aloofness as difficulty expressing kindness and his insistence about the leftover cake as concealed affection. The narration explicitly attributes her increasingly favorable interpretations to his Succubus Physique 65 68 69.
