Background / History

The Ancient One inherited the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme from Agamotto after the first Sorcerer Supreme departed to reunite with Oshtur in the multiverse. Under his tenure, the Three Sanctuaries were expanded and treaties were made with Heaven and Hell to restrict angelic and demonic descents into the mortal realm. He reportedly won twenty-two consecutive Sorcerer Supreme Tournaments, discouraging Hell’s demons from even betting on later contests. 125 192

As Sorcerer Supreme, he oversees Kamar-Taj and the Sanctums’ defense against dimensional invaders, including Dormammu, Mephisto, Chthon, Set, and threats from other realities. He generally avoids intervening in ordinary geopolitical conflicts unless they endanger Earth itself; during the Atlantis crisis, he made clear that he would act only if Atlantis intended to destroy the planet. 93 125

He first approached Luke Cavill after recognizing that Luke’s human soul and sudden magical aptitude did not match any known dimensional representative. The Ancient One is patient, observant, and difficult to pressure into immediate decisions. When Luke proposed expanding Kamar-Taj through a dedicated educational institution, he neither accepted nor rejected the idea, choosing instead to consider its dangers and consequences. 93

He is notably more approachable than Agamotto, welcoming Luke despite the uncertainty surrounding his origin. At the same time, he is detached from mundane affairs and reluctant to spend his long life resolving every worldly crisis. 93 125

Despite his relaxed attitude toward rules and retirement, he remains calculating when Earth’s mystical defenses are at stake.
