History

Rise of Stark Industries

Before and during World War II, Howard exploited the expanding arms market to transform Stark Industries into a major military-industrial concern. His inventions won Defense Department favor, while the wealth they generated gave him access to high society and a broad network of influential contacts. 2

During the war, he became the Allies' largest weapons sponsor, a renowned scientist, and the Strategic Scientific Reserve's chief scientific advisor. Colonel Phillips recruited him for the organization despite finding him personally irritating. 45

Postwar Recruitment into S.H.I.E.L.D.

After the Manhattan Project ended, Howard fell into an intellectual and emotional slump. Luke used Howard's interest in the Tesseract to recruit him into the newly reorganized S.H.I.E.L.D. as a research consultant. 85
