| Unscripted swordsmanship | 83 84 106 114 | With magic suppressed in Aincrad, learns usable movement and force-generation principles from players and monsters rather than acquiring system skills. |
| Nameless and Mountain Severance | 121 125 | Lisbeth’s reforging gives him a sword capable of carrying his full strength. Uses precisely concentrated force against The Gleam Eyes’ weapon. |
| No Interval | 130 | Develops continuous attacks by turning each collision’s recoil into the beginning of the next strike. |
| Temporary magical breakthrough | 131 133 | An open administrative permissions channel briefly permits Boundary-Severing Blade. Magic becomes inaccessible afterward, but a faint perception of boundaries remains. |
| All Things Return to One | 146 | Combines interchangeable sword paths while carrying accumulated force toward an endpoint; Kayaba identifies that endpoint as its weakness. |
| No Form | 147 156 | Abandons a predetermined endpoint, choosing each next attack as the preceding exchange concludes. Later defeats Erza with it. |
| Magic usable after returning home | 152 173 182 | Returns to the Fairy Tail world and subsequently combines spatial folding with his developed swordsmanship. |
| Initial Falna inscription | 196 | Receives Hestia’s blessing. The five basic attributes begin at their lowest values because the Falna has not yet recorded his subsequent experiences; the magic and skill fields display abnormalities. |
History
Godslaying and the Black Serpent
Lin Yuan’s first godslaying occurred on Sardinia, less than three days after his arrival there. Facing an island-wide sacrifice and a fatal spear wound, he waited until the victorious god lowered its guard, stole its spear through Prometheus’s Grimoire, and drove it into the god’s heart. The island’s survivors immediately began treating the seventeen-year-old as a king rather than an ordinary person 1.
Over the next three years, he accumulated ten Authorities. When he returned to Sardinia at twenty, a black serpent was emerging through the gate within his soul, spreading its patterns across his ten divine thrones. After ordering the island’s mages to evacuate, he used the grimoire’s final page to seal his Authorities. He then invoked Heaven’s Imperial Gate and dragged the serpent’s forming claw into the void, preventing it from reaching the world 1.
He survived in an unfamiliar forest, but his body had become that of a child. His Authorities no longer answered him, and his memories were fragmented. During a Six-Eyed Horned Wolf’s attack, his remaining magic manifested by removing distance 1 2 3 5.
Joining Fairy Tail
Makarov found Lin Yuan in the forest north of Magnolia and brought him to Fairy Tail. The guild accepted him without demanding proof of his past or worth. His first magic-registration test destroyed the measuring crystal, revealing enormous reserves but almost no control 3 4.
Makarov initially barred him from jobs and supervised basic exercises. Lin Yuan paid for his dormitory room and meals by cleaning the hall and repairing furniture, gradually becoming comfortable with the guild’s noise and unsolicited kindness 6.
When a divine throne stirred in response to Natsu’s Dragon Slayer Magic, Lin Yuan was offered a route back to his former strength. Recognizing that reopening the seal would also give the serpent another entrance, he forced the throne shut and chose to rebuild from nothing 7 8.
His first completed job with Mira, Macao, and Wakaba involved the Sleeping Church and Sunken Bell Town. He isolated the church spatially, helped defeat the cursed object beneath it, and returned with a black stone bearing a record of hunting gods 18 22 24.
After a year of jobs and training, he and Laxus became the only candidates for Fairy Tail’s annual S-Class examination. Lin Yuan passed by completing Gildarts’s objective rather than trying to defeat him, earning formal promotion alongside Laxus 44 50 51.
Trapped in Aincrad
A pale blue rift inside a moving castle pursued Lin Yuan after he severed its connection to a black clock. He separated Mira from himself to keep her outside its reach, then vanished into the rift and arrived in Aincrad’s Town of Beginnings 77.
Aincrad’s rules prevented his magic from leaving his body. He also lacked a character ID, level, health bar, inventory, and recognized trading or party functions. His existing physical strength remained usable, but killing monsters provided no statistical advancement 78 87 90 92 106.
He cleared the first- and second-floor bosses through observation and swordplay, then developed a close fighting partnership with Kirito. Together they rescued the Moonlit Black Cats from a treasure-chest room on the twenty-seventh floor. The guild made a place for Lin Yuan even though its roster could not register him 87 97 106 157.
During a visit to Kirito and Asuna’s lakeside cabin, he found an unconscious girl in the forest. She remembered only the name Yui and began calling him “Big brother.” He later defended her against Cardinal, briefly breaking through the restriction on his magic 127 130 131.
Lin Yuan continued advancing with the clearing party while searching unexplored areas for abnormal boundaries. Against Kayaba, his developing swordsmanship progressed through All Things Return to One into No Form. Afterward, he found a rift beneath Aincrad’s vanished first floor and returned to the Fairy Tail world 139 142 146 147 152.
Homecoming and a Chosen Departure
Two years had passed in Magnolia when Mira brought Lin Yuan back to the guild. He demonstrated his changed swordsmanship in matches with Natsu and Erza, then explained his life with the Moonlit Black Cats and Yui 154 155 156 157.
Yui could not accompany him: she had no body in the players’ real world, and the World Marker would not carry another living being through the rift. Lin Yuan retained her world’s coordinates but lacked a way to open a path to them 157 185.
He later purchased a house in Magnolia for 19.5 million J and restored it with Mira. When an unstable interworld rift appeared on Pine Needle Mountain, he sealed it temporarily and chose to investigate, hoping another world might offer knowledge that would help him reach Yui. Makarov explicitly treated this as Lin Yuan’s personal decision, not a guild assignment 166 184 185.
Before his departure, Mira gave him a silver Fairy Tail pendant as a reminder of where he belonged. The guild gathered to see him off as he entered the rift and arranged for its entrance to close behind him 186.
Orario and the Hestia Familia
Lin Yuan emerged in the Dungeon, where his spatial magic functioned normally. He encountered the Loki Familia’s returning expedition, helped its members, and accompanied them to Orario. Finn temporarily vouched for his conduct, though the Guild withheld permission for official commissions while his identity remained under investigation 188 189 191 192.
He postponed Loki’s invitation to join her Familia until he understood the world better. His subsequent spar with Ais ended without a winner after Finn stopped both rounds from escalating further 194.
Hestia’s explanation that a home should be somewhere people can return to—not a cage preventing them from leaving—persuaded him to join her Familia. Her Falna made contact without disturbing his soul seal or World Marker, and his spatial God-Slaying Magic Power accepted the inscription 196.
Appearance
- Eyes: Gray-gold; ten golden rings appear in his pupils when he confronts the black serpent before crossing into the void 1.
- Rejuvenated body: Arrives in the Fairy Tail world as a child estimated to be about ten, then visibly grows during his guild years 28 31 44.
- Guild emblem: Initially chooses a silver-gray Fairy Tail mark on the front of his left shoulder, near his chest 4 7.
- Later appearance: By his reunion with Laxus, he has completely lost his earlier boyish look 181.
- Usual accessories: Carries Nameless at his waist and wears Mira’s silver guild pendant during his journey to Orario 186 187.
Personality
Lin Yuan strongly resists being reduced to someone else’s tool or category. He refuses a god’s demand to kneel, rejects the serpent’s offer of restored power, and insists that Kirito treat him as a person rather than a programmed character. Even when others expect him to save them, he maintains that he will act by his own choice 1 8 92.
His approach to training is patient and analytical. He accepts modest progress after losing his Authorities, studies opponents instead of merely overpowering them, and repeatedly asks Erza to continue after being defeated. He distinguishes a technique’s underlying mechanics from its superficial form, retaining only movements suited to his own weapon and body 6 8 67 83 84.
He is protective without treating companions as helpless. He shields Mira’s siblings during her rampage, refuses to take inexperienced children into a collapsing-tunnel job, and shares practical responsibilities with Kirito rather than treating their partnership as charity. His care for Yui draws directly on Makarov’s willingness to give an unknown child somewhere to belong 12 52 106 127.
His bluntness can cause friction, particularly with Mira, but he can acknowledge fault publicly. Their early arguments develop into familiar teasing, while his fear of returning to an empty home gradually gives way to a lasting attachment to Fairy Tail 10 25 26 166.
Abilities & Skills
Space God Slayer Magic
Lin Yuan’s black-and-silver magic manipulates distance and can devour space rather than simply transport objects. The Magic Council provisionally classifies it as Non-Elemental God Slayer Magic 5 32.
- Distance folding: Shortens, extends, reverses, or loops routes to reposition combatants, delay falling objects, redirect attacks, and contain enemies 12 18 38 42.
- Spatial perception: Detects changing distances even when mud blocks ordinary vision; also helps locate monster energy cores 66 188.
- Command redirection: Reflects the Sleeping Church statue’s compulsion because the command must cross a distance to reach its targets 18.
- Space consumption: Absorbs shattered space as magic power and removes the remaining distance to Gildarts’s flag 50.
- Analysis requirement: Can consume only spatial structures he can analyze; Gildarts warns him against recklessly attempting it on Crush magic 45.
- Control limitations: His early inability to regulate consumption makes even basic exercises destructive 5 6.
- Measured reserves: Overloads all twelve markings of the Council’s apparatus while releasing less than half his magic power 31.
Spatial Combat Techniques
- Zero-Distance Crushing Fist: Removes the distance between his fist and a target to deliver a direct, magic-enhanced impact 64 188.
- Space God’s Roar: Concentrates spatial magic into overlapping black-and-silver layers, developed after studying how Natsu gathers power for his roar 59 60.
- Space God’s Folding Wings: Uses curved spatial folds to redirect projectiles, disrupt flight, or compress groups of enemies together 62 188.
- Boundary-Severing Blade: Forms a weightless blade from a spatial fault. Its length can change, and it does not dull through ordinary impacts; effective use still requires swordsmanship 65 66 67.
- Space Lockdown: Connects spatial traces into a closed boundary capable of temporarily stopping an interworld rift’s expansion 184 185.
Swordsmanship
Erza teaches Lin Yuan positioning, blade recovery, grip, footwork, and the distinct handling required for his variable-length blade. Aincrad later forces him to develop these fundamentals without spatial assistance 67 68 70 78.
| Technique | Function | Limitations / Development |
|---|---|---|
| Mountain Severance | Channels force through his body into a precisely placed, powerful strike 125. | Requires time to build power and a weapon able to withstand it; an opponent can interrupt its preparation 130 145. |
| No Interval | Uses recoil and borrowed force to link attacks without returning to a ready position 130. | Individual blows are weaker than Mountain Severance; continuity supplies the pressure 130. |
| All Things Return to One | Substitutes different sword paths during an exchange while passing accumulated force onward 146. | Its force still converges on an endpoint that Kayaba can anticipate 146. |
| No Form | Selects the next sword path from the immediate exchange instead of committing to a predetermined sequence 147 156. | Does not guarantee victory: Kayaba counters with reactive system acceleration, and Ais’s spar remains unresolved 147 194. |
- Learns from enemy balance, acceleration, weapon contact, and attack angles rather than copying entire system skills 83 84 114 124.
- Uses nonrepeating combinations against monsters that memorize repeated sword skills 142.
- Combines No Form and No Interval with spatial folding after returning to Fairy Tail 173.
Campione Constitution and Physical Combat
- Magic rejection: His body instinctively resists healing magic and completely rejects Mystogan’s sleep spell 5 167.
- Retained combat instincts: Quickly masters physical exercises and reacts efficiently without conscious instruction or magic 6.
- Close-quarters technique: Uses balance disruption, throws, positioning, and an opponent’s momentum to defeat Natsu in their first magic-free spar 7.
- Real injuries: In Aincrad, his wounds bleed normally, pain is not automatically limited, and companions receive no system warning when he is injured or exhausted 106 147.
World Marker and Boundary Perception
The World Marker adapts Lin Yuan’s body to different worlds’ rules, but it does not grant unrestricted travel between them 185.
- Preserves Nameless through assimilation on his return from Aincrad 185.
- Cannot currently protect a second living traveler, preventing him from bringing Yui or Mira through a world boundary 157 185.
- Leaves him able to perceive certain hidden boundaries after his intervention against Cardinal, even while ordinary magic remains suppressed 131 133 148.
- Does not make remembered coordinates equivalent to an open route; he knows Yui’s destination but cannot yet reach it at will 185.
- Requires him to maintain his own position while navigating the directionless space between worlds 185.
Equipment & Items
- Nameless — His principal sword. Originally forged by Nezha, then reforged by Lisbeth with crystal stone fragments reinforcing its spine. Its resilience lets him deliver strength that bent his earlier weapon; equipment-stat requirements provide no meaningful restriction or benefit to him 121 125.
- Prometheus’s Grimoire — Used to steal the God-Slaying Spear. Its final page later seals his Authorities before his confrontation with the black serpent 1.
- God-Slaying Spear — The stolen divine weapon with which he kills his first god 1.
- Silver Fairy Tail pendant — Mira’s gift, engraved with the guild emblem on the front and his name on the back. It has no Enchantment Magic 186.
- Interworld travel supplies — Carries clothes, injury medicine, fire starters, rope, preserved food, gold coins, and Magic Crystals before voluntarily leaving for another world 186.
- Magnolia house — Purchased for 19.5 million J and repaired with Mira; bears a plaque carved with his name 166.
Relationships
- Makarov — Rescuer, guild master, and mentor. Gives him a home, supervises his magical control, and later refuses to turn his unique ability to cross worlds into an obligation 3 4 6 185.
- Mira — Frequent partner and sparring rival. Their hostile first meeting develops into trust, shared jobs, help restoring his house, and her gift of a pendant before his departure 10 52 159 166 186.
- Erza — Swordsmanship teacher and sparring partner. Teaches his fundamentals and later acknowledges his victory through No Form 67 70 156.
- Laxus — Competitive peer and fellow S-Class examinee. Their early matches produce no decisive overall winner; their later quarry rematch is halted by Makarov 38 44 51 182.
- Natsu — Guildmate and persistent challenger. Their first spar stirs a sealed throne, while Natsu’s roar later inspires Lin Yuan’s own technique 7 59 60 155.
- Lisanna and Elfman — Younger guildmates he protects and encourages to train safely. Lisanna calls him “Brother Lin Yuan” and welcomes him home after his disappearance 12 52 127 154.

- Yui — Adopted little-sister figure. He rescues her, defends her against Cardinal, and seeks a way to return to her world 127 128 131 185.
- Moonlit Black Cats — His second guild family. Make room for him despite the system’s inability to record his membership, and support his frontline work with supplies and information 138 157.
- Ais — Orario sparring partner interested in his distance-based movement. Their later two-round match ends without a winner 189 194.
- Finn — Guides him out of the Dungeon, vouches for his conduct, and intervenes when his spar with Ais threatens the training ground 189 191 192 194.
- Hestia — Patron goddess. Wins his trust by accepting that joining her Familia need not prevent him from returning home 196.
- Black serpent — An entity seeking access through his sealed divine powers. Lin Yuan rejects its temptation because restoring those powers would reopen its route into him 1 8.

Trivia
- His response after destroying Fairy Tail’s registration crystal is simply, “It lit up” 4.
- Aincrad players call him the Nameless Swordsman because no name or health bar appears above him; he responds by introducing himself as Lin Yuan 114.
- Buying his Magnolia house leaves him with only 40,000 J, so he plans to eat at the guild 166.
