Background and History
Vic is the son of a farmer. His father died from a venomous snakebite, and his mother later died of illness, leaving him orphaned by the time Noah recruited him at age ten 5.
He initially hesitated to accept Noah's offer of work and accommodation because of his enormous appetite. Having already eaten at least twenty kilograms of meat without feeling satisfied, he worried about the burden he would place on Noah. Noah promised to feed him fully as long as he worked hard, and Vic accepted through tears 5.
With regular meals and training at Noah Manor, Vic developed rapidly. By June 13, 1502, he had grown from 1.76 to 2.23 meters in six months and could eat more than eighty kilograms in one meal. Noah regarded this appetite as an indication of exceptional physical potential 6.
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Black hair and green eyes 5.
- Build: Tall and heavily built even during his early training; reaches 2.91 meters at thirteen and nearly 3.3 meters at seventeen 6 33 87.
- Musculature: Reveals marble-like muscles when he tears off his shirt before fighting Zephyr 118.
- Combat appearance: Uses pitch-black Armament Haki over his gauntlets or entire body, later adding mineral armor created through the Rock-Rock Fruit 24 118 127.
Personality
Vic is deeply grateful to Noah and loyal to the family's shared ambitions. He credits Noah's guidance for his development, while Noah emphasizes that Vic's own hard work made his achievements possible. His commitment extends beyond personal strength: he explicitly embraces the goal of building an ideal nation 5 87.
He is persistent and strongly attached to his identity as a physical fighter. He initially refuses a Devil Fruit to preserve his ability to swim, believing the Six Powers and Armament Haki can make him strong enough. He later declines to ask for the Vampire Fruit because he feels its abilities do not suit his fighting style. He accepts the Rock-Rock Fruit only after recognizing his plateau and the family's need for more Admiral-level fighters 10 87.
Vic enjoys challenging formidable opponents, becoming visibly excited before his duel with Zephyr. Nevertheless, he distinguishes respect from mercy: after killing Zephyr, he acknowledges him as an admirable opponent while accepting that their opposing allegiances made the confrontation unavoidable 118 126.
His artistic taste is unexpectedly macabre. He considers the skulls, skeletal furniture, bone reliefs, and white-bone throne he creates for Skeleton Hell beautiful, much to Anduin's discomfort and Ray's amusement 153.
Abilities and Skills
Physical Combat and the Six Powers
Vic's original specialty is close-range combat built around strength, durability, and Haki. He becomes proficient in the Six Powers and develops extensions before acquiring a Devil Fruit 9 33.
- Tekkai: Hardens his body sufficiently for bullets to strike him as though hitting steel 15.
- Iron Cannon Fist: Shatters a thick stone slab with a gauntleted punch, exposing an underground chamber 15.
- Rankyaku: Launches cutting air blades with his kicks 24.
- Soru: Uses rapid movement to close the distance against Zephyr 118.
- Defensive specialization: Initially struggles to land decisive blows against the faster Hook Sword, although Hook Sword likewise cannot overcome his defenses 24.
Haki
Vic possesses all three forms of Haki, with Armament identified as a natural strength early in his training 9 33 87.
- Armament Haki: Reaches the advanced level by thirteen. Later uses full-body coating and reinforces mineral weapons and laser attacks 33 118 127.
- Observation Haki: Possesses basic proficiency at the family's three-year assessment 33.
- Conqueror's Haki: Awakens a crimson manifestation strong enough to suppress Accino before Vic withdraws it 87.
- Combined pressure: His Conqueror's Haki merges with Noah's and Joshua's during the confrontation with Kong and the Marines 118.
- Coating: Applies Conqueror's Haki to his body and Ruby Laser Cannon attacks 118 127 210.
Noah attributes Vic's awakening to sustained conviction, a powerful body, repeated mental self-suggestion, and the IQ compound's evolutionary effects. Vic's case leads Noah to conclude that other committed family members might awaken Conqueror's Haki through similar conditions 87.
Rock-Rock Fruit
The Rock-Rock Fruit allows Vic to transform into, produce, and manipulate stone. Its elementalization also encompasses sand, and the fruit is described as a superior version of the Sand-Sand Fruit capable of reproducing its abilities 88.
- Mineral recording: Records the composition of sampled stones and gemstones. Reproduction requires the corresponding elemental components nearby 87.
- Sand transformation: Uses sand for evasion, aerial movement, and water absorption 88 127.
- Constructs: Creates rock giants, rock-and-sand pythons, and enormous gem dragons 88 210.
- Gemstone production: Copies materials including rubies, sapphires, emeralds, diamonds, jade, and other stones gathered in the Ankura Kingdom 87.
- Poneglyph limitation: Can control a Poneglyph slab but cannot reproduce its material because a substance within it interferes with his power 88.
Mineral Armor
Vic develops different mineral bodies and armor types rather than relying on one material for every opponent 88.
| Material | Applications and Limits |
|---|---|
| Diamond | Resists Kuro's claws even after he adds Armament Haki. However, Accino's heat ignites its surface; Noah warns that temperatures above 800°C can set it on fire 88. |
| Moissanite | Slightly less hard than diamond but withstands temperatures below 2,700°C. Later blocks Borsalino's Flash Kick and resists Sakazuki's magma 88 127 210. |
| Sand | Provides a practical elemental form for avoiding physical attacks; Vic switches to it when his diamond surface catches fire 88. |
Camouflage and Infiltration
Vic uses opal's structure to blend into his surroundings and can disguise himself as ordinary rock 88.
- Visual concealment: Gradually disappears from view by adjusting his opal surface. He also coats the Nautilus in opal to conceal the vessel 88 89.
- Observation Haki evasion: Kuro cannot locate him during testing. Noah's stronger Observation Haki still detects faint fluctuations, especially with electromagnetic-wave amplification 88.
- Operational use: His ability enables Noah's group to infiltrate Punk Hazard's research base 90.
Explosives and Mineral Weapons
After sampling underground Dyna Stone, Vic learns to manufacture it in bulk. He seals it inside crystal to prevent contact with oxygen; breaking the casing exposes the explosive and triggers detonation 89.
- Great Bomber: Scatters Dyna Stone crystals while airborne as sand, creating sustained explosions across an area exceeding ten kilometers in radius 127.
- Carpet Bombing: Produces countless crystalline Dyna Stones to counter Sakazuki's wide-ranging magma attacks 210.
- Ruby Laser Cannon: Forms a mineral cannon and fires a laser reinforced with Armament and Conqueror's Haki 127.
- A-Shura's Wrath: Uses a gigantic Ruby Laser Cannon to carve a canyon hundreds of meters wide and dozens of kilometers long across the battlefield 210.
- Mass underground detonation: Creates an explosion with a kilometers-wide core, followed by an earthquake, shock wave, and tsunami. The attack fatally wounds Zephyr and damages the Buster Call fleet 126.
Geological Sensing and Engineering
Vic's abilities make him valuable for construction and strategic terrain alteration as well as combat 136 153 194.
- Underground surveying: Senses Impel Down and the surrounding strata within a hundred-kilometer radius, then creates a miniature sand model of the prison 153.
- Subterranean Rock Quicksand: Moves through rock, following Morley's hidden passage for nearly 1,600 kilometers 153.
- Seas Turn to Mulberry Fields: Silently sinks the deserted island at the passage's exit 153.
- Fortification: Reinforces Impel Down and alters its geological connections to prevent fighting inside from disturbing nearby strata 194.
- Large-scale terrain work: Builds seabed ridges, strengthens the New World's underground formations, and helps reshape the shattered Red Line 136 177 228.
Equipment and Items
- Alloy gauntlets: Early close-combat equipment used for Iron Cannon Fist and reinforced with Armament Haki 15 18.
- Diving suit: Used during his pre-Devil Fruit salvage work, with a breathing hose, safety rope, waterproof searchlight, and a breakable wooden card for signaling Noah 9.
- Iron polearm: Used to open wrecks and probe wooden floors for hidden compartments 9 10.
- Vampire Fruit — offered, not consumed: Noah originally obtains it for Vic, but Vic never requests it. After Vic eats the Rock-Rock Fruit, the Vampire Fruit goes to Kuro 53 87 90.
Relationships
- Noah — Childhood friend, benefactor, leader, and mentor. Vic calls him “Big Brother” and shares his ambition to create an ideal nation 5 10 87.
- Ray — Longstanding teammate who transports him for missions, including the Rock-Rock Fruit handover and Impel Down renovations 87 153.
- Jay — Underwater salvage partner. Together they recover approximately 3.7 billion Beli in treasure and numerous valuable materials around Sikasis Island 20.
- Lilith — Combat partner in the captures of Tanaka Taro and Parrot Guro; her poison needles also create the opening Vic uses to kill Hook Sword 18 24.
- Joshua — Fellow front-line fighter. Their Conqueror's Haki combines with Noah's, and they later coordinate attacks against Borsalino 118 127.
- Shiki — Engineering partner in the North Blue Calm Belt passage project, combining moved islands with Vic's artificial seabed ridges 136.
- Lilian, Pica, and Gairam — Teammates working on the New World's underground formations when Vic discovers the anglerfish carrying Pure Gold 177.
- Anduin and Moria — Collaborators in the covert Impel Down operation. Vic constructs Skeleton Hell for them, although Anduin finds his decorations unsettling 153.
- Zephyr — Enemy whom Vic respects as a fighter. Vic kills him after their duel becomes a two-on-one confrontation and acknowledges his worth afterward 118 126.
- Sakazuki — Admiral-level opponent whose abilities and endurance closely match Vic's during the Battle of Dressrosa 210.
Story Role and Major Arcs
Early Salvage Expeditions
Vic serves as Noah's principal diver during early treasure hunts near Starfish Island, Loguetown, and Reverse Mountain. He searches wrecks, retrieves valuables, and discovers a black patterned Devil Fruit in a pirate ship's hidden compartment. He declines Noah's offer to reserve it for him, preferring to retain his ability to swim 9 10 11.
At Sikasis Island, Vic and Jay recover approximately 3.7 billion Beli in treasure. Their haul also includes the Red Fox Zoan Fruit, the Hole-Hole Fruit later eaten by Ray, weapons, navigational instruments, an ancient stone tablet, rare materials, and Adam Wood 20.
Early Combat Missions
On Organ No. 52, Vic withstands Gaimon's gunfire and later breaks open the slab concealing an underground chamber. During the Blood Knife Pirates' attack, he fights Tanaka Taro with Armament-coated gauntlets and retrieves the dying Parrot Guro from the seabed 15 18.
Against the Money Pirates, Vic initially reaches a stalemate with the faster Hook Sword. Lilith's poison disrupts the swordsman's concentration, allowing Vic to break his arm and punch through his chest 24.
Rock-Rock Fruit and Overseas Operations
After overcoming his physical-training bottleneck with the Rock-Rock Fruit, Vic helps collect the Ankura Kingdom's gemstones and develops his new abilities under Noah's supervision. Acquiring Dyna Stone reproduction shortly afterward elevates his destructive power to Admiral level 87 88 89.
He subsequently assists in infiltrating and attacking Punk Hazard. In Wano, he supports Hermit, discovers the Nidai Kitetsu and Millet-Millet Fruit, and captures Gyukimaru for transfer to the Castle Space 90 102.
Battle of Lulusia
Vic challenges Zephyr at Cow Port, initially relying entirely on physical techniques and Haki. When Doria joins Zephyr, Vic abandons the duel's original terms and unleashes a massive underground explosion. He survives by emerging from the magma, while Zephyr dies from his injuries after warning him not to become a new Celestial Dragon 118 126.
Vic then fights alongside Joshua against Borsalino, using moissanite armor, widespread Dyna Stone bombardment, and a Haki-coated Ruby Laser Cannon to pressure the Admiral 127.
Passage Plan and Impel Down
For the Passage Plan, Vic creates two enormous seabed ridges in the North Blue Calm Belt. Shiki places more than a hundred islands along them, establishing a fortified route between the North Blue and the New World 136.
At Impel Down, Vic redirects Morley's hidden escape route, sinks its former exit island, and reinforces Level 5.5 before remodeling it into Skeleton Hell. He later returns for the Liberator Organization's takeover, strengthening the entire prison so that fighting does not breach its walls or destabilize the surrounding seabed 153 194 195.
New World Geological Work
While strengthening the New World's underground formations near Whitebeard's territory, Vic traps an enormous anglerfish inside a growing stone forest. The discovery leads the group to Pure Gold and to Olga and Dr. Acier, who had been living inside the creature. Vic afterward continues the geological work in the New World 177 178.
He also joins the force confronting Rayleigh, Luffy, Ace, and Sabo after Ray pulls Rusukaina into the Door-Door Fruit's inner world during the assault on Amazon Lily 183.
Dressrosa and the Four Seas
During the Battle of Dressrosa, Vic fights Sakazuki across Green Bit and the surrounding ice. Their magma, gemstone constructs, explosions, and Haki attacks devastate the area, while neither gains an easy advantage 210.
After the World Government's defeat at Mary Geoise, Vic joins Noah, Bon Clay, Issho, and other experts in reshaping the shattered Red Line. Their work connects the four seas with the Grand Line and creates four new landmasses in the Calm Belts 228.
Notable Quotes
