Background / History

Earth and Military Service

Hu Yu originally worked as an ordinary planetarium educator. After the bug disaster began, his old friend Wen Zhonghua persuaded him to enlist. Twenty years of warfare took him from an ordinary pilot to a general, but the deaths of successive generations of comrades left him melancholy and acutely conscious of his responsibilities 1.

While serving as a lieutenant, Hu Yu was hospitalized after an accident and met Xiao Xiao, then a nurse. He subsequently pretended to be ill so that he could visit her, and the two eventually married. Their only son, Hu Yunhang, also entered military service 24.

Leading a Separate Human Fleet

The human leader selected Hu Yu to command one of humanity’s separated fleets, praising his courage, resourcefulness, and ability to take calculated risks. Hu Yu initially doubted his suitability but accepted the assignment. He led one hundred Polaris ships toward Tau Ceti, with UV Ceti designated as a fallback destination 5 7.

Hu Yu organized an Academy of Sciences, announced immortality-gene modification, and began rebuilding the fleet’s industrial base. At Tau Ceti, he prioritized mineral extraction, smelting facilities, new spacecraft, and investigations into habitable planets. Advice from Academician Zeng and Wen Zhonghua also pushed him to stop referring every major decision back to the leader 7 9 10 11.

His first major confrontation with an alien civilization came against the Sand Python Civilization. Despite severe numerical and technological disadvantages, he refused to accept humanity’s destruction and prepared to sacrifice himself. Afterward, he pressed for rapid rearmament and improved Hunter-Killers using captured Sand Python technology 17 20 23.

Alien Contacts and the Wind Star Campaign

On Snow Star, Hu Yu encountered the rabbit-like Snow Tribe. Rather than attack them, he pursued friendship and accepted the young future patriarch, Yan Xue, as his little brother. He nevertheless recognized that genuine trust between civilizations required more than friendly declarations 42 45 47.

Hu Yu later infiltrated Wind Star territory while impersonating a transport captain named Si Luo. Information gathered locally was analyzed by distant computers and scientists, allowing him to reproduce the captain’s behavior convincingly. Human-controlled Wind Star warships subsequently established a long-term infiltration route into enemy territory 58 60.

The campaign also forced brutal compromises. Hu Yu accepted that he could not rescue the enslaved populations aboard the departing ships and broadcast their plight to his fleet as a warning about weakness. Against Wind Star’s fixed defenses, he revived armor-piercing ammunition enhanced with Chong Element rather than relying exclusively on newer weapons 60 70.

Earth Two’s Destruction and Recovery

When the Fish Horse Star Civilization attacked Earth Two, Hu Yu rejected surrender and ordered antimatter and gravity-bomb strikes. The enemy stopped those attacks and bombed the planet, killing five billion people outright and injuring more than one billion 96.

Facing the survivors’ enslavement, Hu Yu prepared to detonate Earth Two’s buried antimatter. Ninety-Seven intervened, offering to teleport the planet away at the cost of its current body. After the transfer, Hu Yu overcame intense self-reproach to organize treatment and reconstruction; Science City and the surviving technology trees became the foundation of recovery 96 97.

Later, unexplained disappearances prompted him to send Zhang Yuanshan into the nebula with ten thousand Wind Masters. He also refused Wen Zhonghua’s proposal to provoke the Fish Horse Star Civilization through broadcasts, fearing retaliation against both his own fleet and other humans 104.

The Xuan Star Conflict and Alliance Building

Hu Yu made rescuing Luo Zhigao’s endangered fleet his overriding priority, passing Snow Star without stopping despite his desire to revisit it. During the prolonged conflict with the Xuan Star Civilization, he oversaw concealed industrial operations beneath planetary surfaces, stockpiled energy balls, and awaited advances in spatial weaponry 134 161 162.

After a thousand-year absence from home, he returned to Xiao Xiao with an expensive necklace and apologized for neglecting her. He also admitted that the attempt to absorb the Xuan Star Civilization had failed; Xiao Xiao encouraged him to rely on humanity’s own efforts to advance 173.

Hu Yu subsequently settled his fleet in the JD6 Planetary System and expanded cooperation among civilizations. He welcomed the Tree Race into the Star Ring Alliance, convened joint military planning, and eventually helped turn the Xuan Star Civilization from an enemy into a trusted ally 218 233 267 363.

War with Fish Horse Star and Conflict with Li Shun

Hu Yu’s encounter with Li Shun’s branch of humanity began with diplomatic caution. Their relationship later became openly hostile after Li Shun ambushed human scientists in the Matter River. Hu Yu treated that conflict as an internal human matter and declined allied civilizations’ offers to join the campaign 208 411.

At Daozi’s direction, Hu Yu met Heavenly Peak liaison Erguan and agreed to attack the Fish Horse Star Civilization to expose the power controlling it. By 59000 CE, he led a joint human–Xuan Star force of 320 billion warships, evacuated Alliance planets, and excluded seven other Small Star Sector Civilizations from responsibility for the attack 436 445.

As the Star Ring Alliance expanded, Hu Yu also addressed abuses within it. His investigation program established more than 250,000 teams and arrested over three million Alliance beings, including more than 400,000 humans. He required seventeen developing civilizations to compensate those they had harmed 472.

The Mirror Sub-Universe and Snow Tribe Rescue

Following another overwhelming Fish Horse Star offensive, Hu Yu’s forces faced severe energy shortages in the Mirror Sub-Universe. Zu’s seizure of more than two trillion people forced Hu Yu into cooperation despite his distrust. He expanded the fleet while searching for a way to recover the hostages 517 523 525 526.

After returning to the wider universe, Hu Yu gathered scattered allies, shared fourth-dimensional navigation technology, and recovered bases stored in two-dimensional form. On re-entering the Mirror Sub-Universe, he found his people returned but Zu missing, and concealed his suspicions while investigating inconsistencies in the rescued population’s experience of time 530.

Hu Yu later traveled more than four million light-years to aid Yan Xue. The campaign against the Giant General Civilization included a communications blackout and a trap that reduced his Conquerors from more than seven trillion to two trillion. His persistence deepened Yan Xue’s attachment to him, and Yan Xue freely shared the Snow Tribe’s technological reserves 538 540 549.

The Hunt for Hu Yu and the Final Campaign

Seeking to expose a hidden mastermind before the decisive war, Hu Yu openly departed on a rescue mission with fifty trillion Blazing Sun battleships and one hundred Expellers. The Yun San leader used the opportunity to set an assassination scheme in motion, culminating in an Insect Emperor consciousness attack 631 633 634 635.

Huang Chi’s forces recovered an apparently dying Hu Yu, but a scan of the unusually healthy body led Huang Chi to suspect a duplicate. Meanwhile, Hu Yu was alive with Gao Jianchuan. He eventually revealed himself to Luo Zhigao and Li Zhixiong while allowing Chen Peng’s search to continue, preserving the impression that he had died 636 638 639.

Before the final battle, Hu Yu informed Xiao Xiao that she and Hu Yunhang had been selected for the Yanhuang Plan, which transferred chosen humans’ Consciousness Fields into new Tree Race members. Hu Yu himself would remain with the fleet. He then returned to Earth Four to direct continuous combat operations 664 665.

Afterward, Hu Yu abandoned his original intention to execute Li Shun. Li Shun and his people had their memories erased and were resettled on rebuilt Tau Ceti, where they would receive a new education and an opportunity to rejoin humanity 685.

Appearance

  • Early appearance: A middle-aged man with graying temples after twenty years of warfare 1.
  • Genetic age fixation: His age was fixed at twenty-five, although war and command pressure left him looking weathered and approximately in his forties 24.
  • Habitual smoking: Frequently smokes while thinking or watching space through a porthole; the resulting lung damage requires repeated lung-cell replacement 517 638 664.

Personality

Hu Yu combines battlefield boldness with caution. Although the leader considers him resourceful and suited to calculated risks, Hu Yu initially lacks confidence in independent command. He gradually learns to make his own decisions and repeatedly forces himself to set grief or anger aside when his people need practical action 5 9 23 97.

His commitment to survival does not eliminate moral conflict. He feels guilty about using human-looking biological androids, rejects Li Shun’s willingness to abandon others, and increasingly distinguishes a hostile civilization’s leadership from its ordinary population. By the Yun San conflict, he can no longer justify killing trillions of civilians as he once attacked Sand Python inhabited worlds 186 212 642.

Hu Yu favors cooperation without treating weaker civilizations as property. He recognizes the independence of civilizations he helps develop and instructs Hu Yunhang to mediate disputes rather than rely on force. His understanding of home expands from Earth to the Solar System and ultimately the entire Milky Way 497 503 664.

At home, his commanding authority gives way to affection, embarrassment, and concern over Xiao Xiao’s displeasure. His devotion to duty nevertheless makes prolonged family separations routine, even turning a promised week with his wife into a difficult luxury 13 173 664.

Abilities & Skills

Fleet Command and Tactical Adaptation

A veteran of thousands of battles, Hu Yu directs operations ranging from early fighter engagements to interdimensional fleet warfare 1 527.

  • Revives simple armor-piercing weapons when reconnaissance reveals that enemy installations lack the defenses needed to stop them 70.

  • Allocates scarce Virtual Matter to exploit breaches in enemy armor and spatial defenses 278.
  • Combines two-dimensional concealment with gravitational-wave orders when four-dimensional communications can be tracked 527.
  • Can still be outmaneuvered: the Giant General Civilization’s trap costs him roughly five trillion Conquerors 540.

Infiltration and Counter-Deception

Hu Yu conducts covert operations personally and uses controlled appearances to mislead hostile observers.

  • Impersonates Si Luo using intercepted information, behavioral records, and remote scientific analysis 58.
  • Uses coded phrases within ordinary conversation to keep his companions alert during Li Shun’s hospitality 208.
  • Maintains the appearance of his own death to avoid warning the hidden mastermind 638 639.

Administration and Diplomacy

Hu Yu’s authority extends beyond combat to scientific organization, industrial planning, and relations between civilizations.

  • Establishes the fleet’s Academy of Sciences and coordinates industrial reconstruction 7 11.
  • Shares advanced technology to strengthen allied civilizations 438 530.
  • Organizes Alliance-wide investigations and compensation for victims of member misconduct 472.
