Background / History

Military Service and Friendship with Yunyi

Lina’s upbringing instilled a strong sense of military honor. She had already joined the American military when she met Liu Yunyi during his years in America. He repeatedly encouraged her to leave the service and tried to recruit her himself, but she refused and eventually became Sirius 204.

The two kept in contact, discussed magic, sparred, and helped each other with missions. Their cooperation deteriorated because Lina withheld information out of loyalty to the military. By the time Virginia Balance questioned her about their relationship, Yunyi had rarely contacted her for roughly a year 166 204 209.

During an earlier classified pursuit assignment, Lina recognized information that Yunyi had previously helped investigate. His advance knowledge made her question whether the military was restricting her access to intelligence—the first time she began doubting it 129.

Undercover Assignment in Japan

After Yunyi’s intervention at Ogasawara attracted international attention, Lina was recalled from a classified mission to STARS headquarters. Photographs established her prior connection to him, and Virginia ordered her to infiltrate Japan and recruit him for America, with broad freedom to negotiate his terms 165 166.

Lina arrived with support personnel and prepared their cover, accommodation, and knowledge of the surrounding terrain. She initially avoided approaching Yunyi because Japanese factions were already watching him 184 191.

She subsequently entered First High School’s Class A as Angelina Shields. Yunyi’s intense scrutiny unsettled her during her introduction. In practical lessons, she overwhelmingly defeated Shizuku Kitayama, but Yunyi blocked every attack she used against him and won their match with vector magic 199 200 201.

Conflicting Loyalties

Lina admitted that her assignment was to persuade Yunyi to become an American citizen. However, she concealed developments in the Parasite investigation because they were classified, including her execution of two possessed STARS soldiers. Her later apology did not repair the damage: Yunyi decided that a partner who could not share information was no longer useful to him 204 206.

Their disagreement also extended to magic’s purpose. Lina considered Yunyi’s ambition to integrate magic into everyday life overly idealistic, while he rejected treating magicians solely as military weapons 208.

When Virginia raised the possibility of eliminating Yunyi if recruitment failed, Lina warned that opposing him could devastate their forces. She disclosed that he had completely defended against her Heavy Metal Burst on multiple occasions. Virginia then ordered her to arrange a direct meeting, which Yunyi accepted on the condition that naturalization would not be discussed 209 210 215.

Public Morals Committee and the Parasite Hunt

Yunyi used an outstanding bet to pressure Lina into joining First High School’s Public Morals Committee. He also assigned her to escort Suzune Ichihara to and from school. Lina defeated the attackers sent after Suzune so thoroughly that Zhou Gongjin redirected his operation toward Kei Isori 213 216 219.

Her military duties soon brought her into the Parasite hunt. After possessed STARS members exposed their comrades’ intelligence and communications, Lina was ordered to take over the pursuit and execute the infected soldiers. In a secluded park, increasing numbers of Parasites overwhelmed her team despite her attempts to send Claire and Rachel to safety 217 223.

Yunyi intervened before the Parasites reached Lina and protected nearby STARS personnel from otherwise invisible energy attacks. Claire and Rachel’s position was engulfed by those attacks, leaving Lina distraught. She blamed Yunyi for not saving them; he slapped her, demanded that she reconsider the accusation, and took her home after she apologized 224 225.

While staying with Yunyi’s household, Lina helped Mayumi defend the mansion against armed intruders. Her failed mission and STARS’ heavy losses left her without new military orders, so she continued attending First High School 230 231 235.

Departure and Confinement

When Yunyi prepared to leave Japan, he invoked Lina’s old bet and took her with his household through the Gate of Transfer. They arrived aboard his research ship in the Pacific 260 261.

Yunyi subsequently treated Lina as a captive and refused to negotiate her release. Her magic and movement aboard the ship remained unrestricted, but external communications were controlled. She did not attempt to seize the vessel or escape, partly because she did not want to destroy their relationship 277 278.

She agreed to relay intelligence about Japan’s naval losses to the American military after Yunyi retrieved belongings left behind by her fallen STARS teammates. The message had to be transmitted through special means to avoid revealing the ship’s location 278.

Break with the American Military

Virginia warned Lina that the military intended to subject STARS personnel to Parasite experiments. Having already seen American Parasite Soldiers, Lina turned to Yunyi rather than relying on her influence within the military. She offered to retire and become Shen Yi’s bodyguard if he rescued her team. He agreed to save unpossessed personnel, but required that possessed soldiers be eliminated 295.

At their meeting in Okinawa, Virginia supplied evidence that STARS members had already been forced into the experiments. She then sent high command a fabricated report and magical image declaring Sirius dead during her infiltration mission, striking Lina’s operational identity from the records 314.

Virginia entrusted Lina’s future to Yunyi, who killed her with white lightning. Lina initially reacted with horror and hatred, then discovered Virginia’s final message: Virginia had chosen to sacrifice herself to protect Lina and prevent investigators from tracing the false death report back to its source. Lina changed her appearance and vowed to take revenge on those responsible 314 315.

Attack on the Parasite Soldiers

At Japan’s harbor, Lina recognized her former STARS subordinates among the American Parasite Soldiers. Knowing that their original consciousness could not be restored, she attacked to put them to rest and retaliate against the military that had used them 323.

Concealed by Parade, a cloak, and a mask, she repeatedly cast Heavy Metal Burst across the battlefield, striking both American troops and Japanese defenders. Yunyi shielded her from counterattacks. American commanders, believing Sirius dead, assumed that an unknown magician had acquired her CAD 323.

Repeated Strategic-Class casting exhausted Lina’s Psions, causing her to fall from the sky. Yunyi caught her and, with her assent, destroyed the remaining Parasite Soldiers using his own reproduction of Heavy Metal Burst. He then left her in Mayumi’s care 323 324.

Appearance

Lina is described as a beautiful, youthful-looking girl whose appearance readily attracts attention 184 204.

  • Hair: Long and golden in her undisguised appearance; she changes it to black with disguise magic 210 315 323.
  • Eyes: Golden 165.
  • Concealed combat appearance: A black cloak and mask, combined with Parade to hide her identity 323.

Personality

Lina initially places military orders above her own wishes. Her sense of duty prevents her from abandoning assignments she expects to fail and leads her to withhold information even from Yunyi. This loyalty repeatedly conflicts with their friendship 191 204 206 249.

Outside her command role, she is energetic, expressive, and easily provoked by Yunyi’s teasing. She argues with him openly, vents her frustration on a cushion, and becomes embarrassed when he brings up their old bet. Her confidence can also disappear quickly when he confronts her 199 200 204 260.

She is deeply attached to her subordinates. Their deaths leave her shaken, she insists on recovering their belongings, and she offers her own military career in exchange for help saving the survivors. Discovering that her country deliberately sacrificed STARS destroys much of her faith in the military and turns her loyalty into a desire for revenge 225 278 295 313 315.

Abilities & Skills

Heavy Metal Burst

Lina’s signature Strategic-Class Magic is a wide-area dispersal spell that converts metal into high-energy plasma. It amplifies the pressure increase during plasma formation and the electromagnetic repulsion between cations 323.

  • Battlefield application: Abundant metal objects allow her to cast it readily across military positions 323.
  • Destructive power: An extremely powerful offensive spell, though less destructive than Tatsuya Shiba’s Material Burst 210 292.
  • Defense limit: Yunyi completely withstands it, even after repeated attempts 210.
  • Resource cost: Repeated use rapidly depletes her Psions; at the harbor, exhaustion causes her to lose altitude and fall 323.

Parade and Disguise Magic

Lina excels at magical disguise and uses Parade to conceal her identity in combat 315 323.

  • Changes her visible appearance, including turning her blonde hair black 315 323.
  • Combines the spell with physical concealment such as a cloak and mask 323.
  • Her harbor disguise prevents American officers from recognizing her as the supposedly dead Sirius 323.

Rapid Casting and Combat Magic

Magic activation speed is Lina’s greatest specialty. Her casting astonishes First High School students, and she switches quickly between spells when an initial attack fails 201 230.

  • Overwhelmingly defeats Shizuku in a practical match 200.
  • Defeats three Executors and an accompanying squad while guarding Suzune 219.
  • Can cast some weaker spells almost instantaneously, but is surprised when Mayumi’s Engraving Type achieves similar speed with an attack she judges at least A-rank 230.
  • Cannot overcome Yunyi’s unobtrusive defensive magic during their school match 201.

Reconnaissance and Covert Operations

  • Magical scouting: Detects sixteen people outside the mansion and identifies five as probable modified humans and the remainder as probable magicians 230.
  • Operational preparation: Directs her team to familiarize themselves with local terrain and establish conditions for later missions 184.
  • Stealth: Operates covertly enough that Yunyi initially struggles to locate her during the Parasite crisis 223.
  • Parasite limitation: Cannot see disembodied Parasites or their incoming energy attacks during the park battle 224.

Command

  • Coordinates Claire, Rachel, Sylvia, and other STARS support personnel during the Japan mission 191 217.
  • Assigns field support and intelligence duties while attempting to preserve undercover identities 217.
  • Orders injured teammates to retreat and takes responsibility for confronting the possessed soldiers herself 223.

Equipment / Items

  • CAD: Associated with her use of Heavy Metal Burst; American commanders prioritize recovering it when they mistake her for an unknown wielder 201 323.
  • Black cloak and mask: Supplied by Yunyi and worn alongside Parade during the harbor attack 323.
  • Communications terminal: Used to receive military orders, report to Virginia, and coordinate operations 165 210 217.
  • Fallen teammates’ belongings: A box recovered from her former residence in Japan at her request 278.
  • Virginia’s terminal: Contains evidence of the forced Parasite experiments and Virginia’s final message to Lina 314 315.

Relationships

  • Liu Yunyi / Walker — Longtime friend, sparring partner, and occasional mission collaborator. Military secrecy damages their partnership; he later confines her aboard his ship, agrees to help rescue STARS, and protects her during her attack on American forces 166 204 206 277 295 323.
  • Virginia Balance — Superior officer and someone personally dear to Lina. Virginia arranges Lina’s official death and sacrifices herself to free her from the military 314 315.
  • Mayumi Saegusa — Yunyi’s girlfriend and Lina’s host after the park disaster. They discuss their conflicting loyalties, defend the mansion together, and later travel together to meet Yunyi 225 230 231 295.
  • STARS personnel — Her subordinates and a central personal responsibility. Their deaths and forced transformation into Parasite Soldiers drive her break with the military 223 278 295 323.
  • Ben — A fellow STARS member involved in earlier operations with Lina and Yunyi. He supports her after the park battle and allows Yunyi to take her away 225.
  • Claire, Rachel, and Sylvia — Members of her undercover support team; Claire and Rachel provide field support, while Sylvia coordinates intelligence 191 217 223.
  • Suzune Ichihara — Her protection assignment through the Public Morals Committee; Lina’s defense forces Zhou Gongjin’s operatives to change targets 216 219.
  • Shen Yi — Yunyi’s mother, whom Lina agrees to serve as a personal bodyguard in exchange for assistance rescuing STARS 261 295.
  • Kasumi and Izumi Saegusa — Initially resent Lina moving into the household because they fear she will take Yunyi away 235.
