Background / History

Previous Life and Childhood

Yunyi is a transmigrator whose previous-life memories have been present since birth. Recognizing the world and its future events, he resolved in childhood to overturn its established order rather than accept the future he remembered 1 19.

His father died during a mission, leaving Yunyi as the sole member of the Yun Family’s direct line. Despite the family’s standing, his initially poor magical aptitude made him a candidate for brain modification. His awakening of Domain Magic overturned those assessments and made him valuable to factions seeking to control him 172 257.

Shen Yi raised him for several years before leaving for work. His grandfather then arranged for Chen Mei to care for him; she ultimately spent more time with Yunyi during his childhood than either Shen Yi or Yun Zhan 167.

At seven, Yunyi killed his kidnappers with Domain Magic. The Yun and Chen patriarchs subsequently destroyed the faction responsible, but Yunyi developed lasting difficulty sleeping deeply. He was conscripted at nine, with no one intervening on his behalf 172 177 191.

Leaving the Alliance

At thirteen, Yunyi left the Great Asian Alliance despite opposition from more than seventy percent of its senior leadership. He secured his departure by forming a Strategic-Class spell above their meeting venue as leverage. He later spent years in America, where he discussed magic and sparred with Lina 41 173 209.

Enrollment at First High School

Yunyi entered Japan under the name Liu Yunyi and obtained admission to First High through powerful connections despite failing its practical and theoretical admission standards. He accepted placement in Course 2 because the less prestigious position suited his plans 1.

His admission concealed a broader objective: recruiting powerful allies for a force capable of counterbalancing the world’s major powers. Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba were among his principal targets 293.

Appearance

• Wears a First High uniform without the flower emblem assigned to Course 1 students 1.

Personality

Yunyi habitually conceals serious intentions behind jokes, teasing, and apparent laziness. He embarrasses Mayumi, provokes opponents, and deliberately limits his public displays of power. His poor entrance results and ordinary school identity therefore give a misleading impression of his capabilities 1 31 45 113.

His central conviction is that magic should serve its user rather than determine the user’s future. He rejects education focused narrowly on combat performance and opposes systems that consign talented children to military service. These beliefs arise directly from his own conscription and attempts by political factions to control his life 122 123 172 177 207.

He is also capable of extreme coercion. He threatens torture, abducts people whose skills he needs, and eliminates political opponents. His rejection of the existing order does not prevent him from using violence and intimidation to impose change 178 191 194 284 316.

Childhood trauma leaves him persistently alert to danger even in familiar surroundings. His ability to lower his guard around Mayumi becomes a significant measure of his trust in her; previously, Shen Yi was the only person beside whom he could reliably sleep soundly 98 191.

Domain Magic — Fool’s World

Yunyi’s foundational ability grants control over Psions within an established domain, including Psions inside other people’s bodies 23 257.

• Magic suppression: Prevents other magicians from connecting to Psions, disabling their casting. Miyuki’s Flight Magic fails while she is falling within Fool’s World 257 293.
• Psion manipulation: Can fuse, split, transform, and convert Psions into usable forms of energy 23 41.
• Memory-based manifestation: Recreates magical effects from clear images in his memories rather than relying exclusively on established Modern or Ancient Magic 23.

Yunyi publicly describes Kotodama as Ancient Magic that interferes with a target’s actions through words 5.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Department-Store Attack

An armed assault forces Yunyi to reveal more of his strength than intended. After Kotodama and close combat prove insufficient to resolve the entire attack, he deploys Fool’s World and Fire Dragon’s Roar, killing the attackers while shielding Mayumi and her sisters. At his home, he admits that Domain Magic is his specialty but withholds its essence 15 16.

Nine Schools Competition

Yunyi adapts spells for permitted competition use with Tatsuya’s technical assistance and wins the men’s Crowd Ball championship. He also arranges Cremation for Shizuku’s match against Miyuki and joins Tatsuya and Mikihiko in the rearranged Monolith Code lineup 57 60 76 90 98.

Break with the Yun Family and Alliance Reform

Returning to the Alliance, Yunyi rejects his grandfather’s restraint and renounces the Yun Family’s leadership position. He eliminates the Stick Faction and works toward changing the military system rather than merely replacing individual officials. His leverage includes military authority taken from that faction and a secretly developed force whose members include magicians who fled conscription 177 178 187 191.

Parasite Incident

Yunyi investigates the Parasites, recruits Miyuki and Yuuka Tsukuba, and fights possessed STARS members. His domain suppresses their magic, but their ability to abandon hosts and merge complicates containment. When Miyuki cannot immediately use Cocytus, he considers permanent banishment as an alternative 225 228.

Identity Exposure and War

Yunyi authorizes Mayumi to confirm his Alliance affiliation to Katsuto. He privately admits that provoking Japan’s military and Ten Master Clans is part of his purpose: retaliation would give him justification to strike back 244 254.

The resulting conflict reveals both his personal destructive power and his independent military organization. His Seventh Detachment suppresses attempts by former Stick Faction forces to seize power, while his wider network includes five newly produced Strategic-Class magicians 273 280.

Return to Japan and Confrontation with the Shibas

While pursuing Gu Jie, Yunyi abducts Kyoko Fujibayashi to obtain her electronic tracking expertise and uses Tatsuya’s facilities. After the plane carrying people important to him is lost in Material Burst’s aftermath, he confronts the Shiba siblings, suppresses Tatsuya’s magic, and pushes Miyuki from a rooftop 284 293.

Their dealings later resume. Miyuki presses for an arrangement under which Yunyi will do everything possible to restore Tatsuya’s emotions 320 321.

Widening International Conflict

As the New Soviet Union occupies Hokkaido and India moves forces toward the border, Yunyi seeks intelligence on opposing figures and secures resources from Alliance families. Four Master Clans support his proposal, while others remain neutral or oppose it. By Chapter 321, he is back in Tokyo receiving reports that Soviet forces have entered Fukushima Prefecture 315 316 321.
