Background / History

Adventuring and settling down

Paul trained at a dojo associated with Lilia’s father. Lilia recalls that Paul sexually assaulted her while drunk after her father arranged for his sword to be hidden in her bedroom, hoping to bind their interests together. Paul subsequently fled the dojo without explaining himself. When Lilia later sought employment in his household, he accepted her resentment rather than denying what had happened 3.

During his adventuring years, Paul rescued Zenith after she left her noble home in Millis. Their relationship developed through their travels, and Zenith became pregnant. Rather than abandoning her as she feared, Paul left his adventuring party and committed himself to her and their child 7.

Paul had captained Black Wolf’s Fang, an S-rank adventuring party. According to Elinalise, he disbanded it and took its assets without explaining himself, destroying the home she felt the party had become 9 99 131.

Buena Village and Rudeus’s upbringing

As Buena Village’s stationed knight, Paul patrolled the forest, settled villagers’ disputes, and fought rampaging monsters. Increasing monster activity sometimes kept him away from home for several days 2 3.

After Rudeus revealed his magical talent, Paul initially insisted that his son should learn swordsmanship. He accepted Lilia’s compromise: magic lessons in the morning and sword training with him in the afternoon. His instruction included running, push-ups, sit-ups, and practical sparring 2 6 11.

Paul’s pride in Rudeus occasionally competed with his judgment. He falsely assured Zenith that other patrolmen would accompany them into the forest, then demonstrated his swordsmanship by killing several monsters. Later, he condemned Rudeus for hitting Somali before learning that Rudeus had intervened to protect Sylphie from bullying. Once corrected, Paul apologized and asked for the full account 9 15.

After a particularly demanding sparring session, Paul urged Rudeus to train at the Sword Sanctum. Rudeus declined because he did not want to pursue swordsmanship alone, and Paul did not force the issue. He subsequently arranged Rudeus’s tutoring position in Roa through Ghislaine, with wages of two silver coins a month and funding for magic-school enrollment after five years 16 24.

Lilia’s pregnancy and the birth of his daughters

While Zenith was pregnant, Lilia revealed that she was also expecting Paul’s child. Paul admitted his involvement, provoking Zenith’s anger. Rudeus intervened on Lilia’s behalf and persuaded Zenith to let her remain with the family 20.

Paul helped both women during their pregnancies, taking over chores when he found them exerting themselves. On a snowy night, Zenith gave birth to Norn, followed by Lilia’s premature but healthy daughter, Aisha. Paul was visibly overwhelmed with emotion after both births 21.

The Fittoa Region Teleport Incident struck while Paul was holding Norn. They landed together in an unfamiliar grassland, separated from Zenith, Lilia, Aisha, and the rest of their household 55.

Paul posted a plea for help through the Adventurers’ Guild, prompting Elinalise to travel to the Demon Continent despite her resentment toward him. He also returned to Fittoa during the search and discovered that the disaster had affected the entire region, not just Buena Village 99 134.

Rudeus eventually found Paul and Norn at an Adventurers’ Guild in the King Dragon Kingdom and reunited them with Lilia and Aisha. After hearing what Rudeus had accomplished, Paul expressed pride in his son and joined the expedition to rescue Zenith from the Teleportation Labyrinth on Begaritt 127 128.

Zenith’s rescue and return to Asura

Inside the labyrinth, Paul apologized to Elinalise for his past betrayal. She urged him to care for Zenith rather than offer repayment. Paul also thanked Rujierd for helping Rudeus and agreed that they should support his son together 130.

Although Paul volunteered to take the vanguard, Rudeus destroyed the attacking monsters before he could contribute. When Paul finally saw Zenith sealed inside a crystal, he rushed toward her despite the Mana Stone Hydra blocking the way. Rudeus restrained him with telekinesis 131 132.

Paul anxiously sought treatment for Zenith’s mild mana erosion and carried her into Rudeus’s Time Reversal Array. After she recovered her memories, the family returned to Asura. Paul later assured Rudeus that he could leave local matters to them while pursuing his other responsibilities 133 134 136.

Appearance

  • Tall and muscular: Described with a powerful build when he rushes into the damaged storeroom to protect Rudeus 2.
  • Sword carried at his waist: Keeps a blade close at hand during village duties and emergencies 2 9.

Personality

Paul is affectionate and openly proud of his children. He panics when he believes Rudeus is in danger, eagerly praises his physical talent, and quickly comforts a crying Norn. His desire to impress Rudeus also makes him boastful, especially when displaying his swordsmanship 2 6 9 55.

His protective ideals coexist with impulsiveness and serious failures of responsibility. He teaches that strength should protect others, yet judges Rudeus’s fight with Somali without first hearing his side. His treatment of Lilia and his betrayal of his former party leave lasting resentment, though he eventually acknowledges his wrongdoing and apologizes 3 15 20 99 130.

At home, Paul is playful, crude, and easily chastened by Zenith. He jokes during training, makes sexual boasts, and becomes sheepish when confronted. Later, learning about Rudeus’s claimed mission to save the world moves him to tears and shifts his focus toward supporting the son who has surpassed him 11 16 24 128 130.
