Background / History

Previous Life and Enslavement

Luo Chen previously lived in Huaxia, where he enjoyed food and dreamed of traveling as a sword-wielding wandering hero. He recognizes people such as Conis and Luffy as characters from an original story, giving him knowledge of the world’s expected events 23 73 121.

After mistakenly boarding a pirate ship, he reached Birka, where its ruler, Kado, branded him a pirate and enslaved him. He worked there for more than half a year before obtaining the Mythical Zoan Shura Fruit. Once he had trained with its powers, he broke out of the mining prison, killed the Chief Warden, and spared the soldiers who had lost the will to fight 1 188.

Enel defeated Kado before Luo Chen could complete his revenge alone. Luo Chen accepted Enel’s invitation to join him because he needed a safe place to grow stronger, then personally finished the incapacitated Kado. He recovered Kado’s training booklet, God’s Legacy, from the body 3 4.

Priest of Blood

Under Enel, Luo Chen became the fifth priest, known as the Priest of Blood. He fought both Sky Island’s defenders and the Shandia, awakening Observation Haki during his early battles. Recognizing his weak physical foundation, he began training without his fruit ability and spent two years strengthening his body and combat skills 8 12 16 17.

He later rescued Hogg and Conis during a pirate attack. Hogg became his friend and taught him the complete Six Powers, but was defeated and killed after challenging Enel to free the oppressed Sky People. Grieving Hogg, Luo Chen vented his anger on Wyper’s fighters; Laki eventually begged him to spare them. Another two years of training followed 23 30 32 107 115.

When the Straw Hats arrived, Luo Chen tested Luffy and demonstrated a Tekkai variant that reflected the force of his attack. He subsequently told Enel that his service had only been temporary and sought permission to return to the Blue Sea. Enel offered freedom if he could survive ten moves, leading to a brutal confrontation 34 38.

During Enel’s final struggle with Luffy, Luo Chen refused to leave before learning whether Enel would destroy Sky Island or be defeated. He later descended with the Straw Hats and helped their escape from Navarone by holding Jonathan back 61 78 95.

Catherine and the Formation of His Crew

Luo Chen visited Catherine at Marine Headquarters to tell her about Hogg’s death and fulfill his promise to protect her. Although she initially insisted that she did not need protection, he intended to recruit her as his vice captain. He later admitted this intention openly while helping her escape 107 115.

Their flight brought him into battle with Akainu. Luo Chen fought to keep Catherine safe aboard the Isel, but Akainu shattered his Armament defense and pierced his chest. Luo Chen used the force of the blow to escape rather than continue the fight. Catherine cared for him while he was unconscious, but lost their course in the process 124 129.

On Supomachi Island, he freed captives and forced Parker to lure slave traders into a trap by claiming that Luo Chen and Catherine would be auctioned. He subsequently recruited Singh and Lulith. Aboard the Isel, he formally gathered Catherine, George, Lulith, and Singh as his crew and gave George a Devil Fruit taken from the Celestial Dragons 150 185 188.

News of his defeat of Carlos spread through Morgans’s newspaper and attracted the attention of major powers. When Limon invited him to serve Big Mom, Luo Chen refused. Later, Katakuri and Jack both tried to prevent his escape, with Jack explicitly announcing that the Beasts Pirates wanted him captured 188 200 212.

Shichibukai and the Paramount War

Luo Chen became a government-recognized Shichibukai and completed a paid arrangement with Vice Admiral Romas involving the capture of Supernovas. He secured Sengoku’s permission to accompany the prisoners to Impel Down and visit Ace 224 242.

He told Ace that the title had given him a way to participate in the coming war and witness Whitebeard’s strength firsthand. During the voyage, discussions with Romas improved his swordsmanship, though an exchange with Mihawk afterward exposed the gap between their abilities 254 256 258.

At Marineford, Luo Chen fought Vista and Red. He trapped Vista in a fissure and wounded Red with Blood Lotus Bloom, but Red ultimately broke his ribs and left him unable to move. Even afterward, Luo Chen acknowledged that Red remained beyond him despite having recovered less than a third of his peak strength 284 285 309.

He eventually left Marineford with Hancock, reached Sabaody, and reunited with his crew. The Luo Chen Pirates then sailed beneath the sea toward Fish-Man Island aboard the coated Isel 314 315 316 319.

Challenging Big Mom

After returning to sea, Luo Chen took part in the campaign against Bundy World. His Armament strengthened during their clash, allowing him to force World back and unleash Super Dragon Fist Blast. Hancock subsequently received him privately aboard her ship 367 368.

Luo Chen later invaded Whole Cake Chateau and formally declared war on the Charlotte Clan. He fought Katakuri while using the confrontation to hone his Haki. Later accounts credit him with defeating Katakuri, but Big Mom then crushed him and his crew’s whereabouts became unknown 383 398.

Nayako treated his injuries after that defeat. Luo Chen subsequently unveiled Life Return: Wild Incarnation against Sutori and came to understand his Conqueror’s Haki while fighting Jet. After learning that Catherine had returned to the Holy Land, he vowed to rescue both her and Nayako 394 400 403.

Rescue at Mary Geoise and Rain Burial’s Loss

Luo Chen later directed guild personnel while facing assassins and government infiltrators. A coordinated attack by Chaton, Momousagi, and Mammon nearly killed him, although he severely wounded Mammon and endured repeated injuries through his regeneration. His companions’ intervention forced Chaton to abandon a finishing opportunity 409 415 420 421.

After accepting Trian into his crew, Luo Chen sailed toward Mary Geoise to disrupt Catherine’s wedding to Orange. He assigned himself, Phil, and Singh to attack the wedding while George and Monbuma assisted Catherine’s escape. Blood-created clones drew defenders away, but the operation still brought him into conflict with Samael and other powerful opponents 428 431 438 440.

Rain Burial was broken during this conflict. Luo Chen later admitted that he had treated it merely as a tool and promised to change if it could be reforged. At Casting, Wieland combined its remains with his ancestors’ secret iron to create Rising Sun Wind. The new sword accepted Luo Chen, who departed with Catherine while Fujitora pursued them 445 451.

Appearance

• Human form: A youthful, delicate, handsome face and a muscular physique developed through sustained training 31 316 400.
• Early Asura appearance: Crimson hair, blood-red eyes, faintly red skin, and blood-red feathered wings 1.
• Larger Shura form: Approximately seven meters tall, with blood-colored armor, wings, and a vertical mark between the brows 201.

Personality

Luo Chen is rebellious and strongly resistant to submission. He accepts Enel’s authority as a temporary expedient, rejects Big Mom’s recruitment, and considers himself someone fundamentally unwilling to serve others. He also declares that he would rather die fighting than have a companion abandon their dignity to beg for his life 3 32 200 257.

He is ruthless toward enemies associated with his suffering. He feels no obligation to save Birka’s residents who celebrated his enslavement, and grief over Hogg drives him to attack the Shandia. His mercy is selective: he spares demoralized prison soldiers, releases captives, and later accepts Trian despite his father’s betrayal 1 4 30 150 428.

Despite his provocative manner, Luo Chen is not blindly reckless. He recognizes when Red outclasses him, uses taunts to destabilize dangerous opponents, and refuses to return Momousagi’s sword before he is safe. His rescue operation at Mary Geoise relies on decoys rather than a straightforward charge 309 400 421 431.

He treats defeat as temporary and repeatedly turns setbacks into training opportunities. His growth also includes learning to value more than raw power: after Rain Burial breaks, he accepts responsibility for neglecting it and resolves to regard his next sword as a companion 16 400 445 451.

Mythical Zoan: Asura Form

Luo Chen’s fruit transforms him into a blood-red Shura and grants control over killing intent and Blood Breath. Robin identifies it from an Ohara book as the Human-Human Fruit, Asura Form, an ability described as invincible eight hundred years earlier 1 236.
