| Awakening experience retained | 445 | Although the heightened sword intent fades, she retains a firm understanding of the state. Her strength leaps forward, making her the crew’s second-strongest fighter again. |
| Haki strengthened by the inheritance | 449 456 | Observation Haki is demonstrated at Ailas Castle. It is later explained that the Sword in the Stone’s acceptance and cleansing of her body and mind caused her Haki to surge, greatly extending her sensing range. |
Background / History
Glücksburg Family and Marine Service
Catherine and Hogg belonged to the Glücksburg Clan, a Celestial Dragon family expelled from the Holy Land by Imu. Catherine rejected both the status and the bloodline associated with it. When Saint Orange approached her at Marineford, she called herself Anna Catherine and denied being Glücksburg Catherine 105 109.
She and Hogg joined the Marines to protect ordinary people from pirates. By her confrontation with Orange, Catherine had served for ten years and reached the rank of Marine Headquarters Colonel. She admired Gion, whom she called “Sister Gion,” and wanted to become a great swordswoman like her 114 120 188.
Hogg had been absent for two years when Luo Chen brought her his pocket watch, containing a photograph of the siblings. After recognizing it, Catherine invited Luo Chen inside and learned that Hogg had died fighting the god of a Sky Island while trying to free its oppressed inhabitants. Initially unable to accept the news, she eventually asked Luo Chen to tell her everything about her brother’s death 106 107.
Refusal of Saint Orange and Escape from Marineford
Orange demanded that Catherine honor their families’ marriage agreement and return to Mary Geoise. She refused, accusing his family of abandoning hers when they needed help and returning only after deciding she might still be useful. Orange then ordered Vice Admiral Califo to take her by force 108 109.
Catherine resisted with her sword but was overpowered and knocked unconscious. Sengoku had forbidden Marine interference, leaving Momousagi unable to protect her. Luo Chen intervened, defeated Califo, and awakened Catherine 105 110 111 113.
Garp’s appearance on Orange’s behalf shattered Catherine’s faith in the organization she had served. Luo Chen reminded her that protecting the weak—not loyalty to an institution—had been her original purpose. At the harbor, she accepted his invitation to become his first mate, and they seized Orange’s ship, the Isel 114 115 116.
The government issued her first bounty of 50 million Beli, requiring her capture alive. Its amount reflected her identity rather than her fighting achievements. As she left Marineford, Catherine acknowledged that her ancestry lay behind the crisis and said she did not blame the Marines as a whole 117.
Early Voyages and Supomachi Island
While caring for an unconscious Luo Chen, Catherine steered away from Marine Headquarters without recording their route. With sea charts but no Log Pose, the pair became lost and had to drift with the current 129.
During their encounter with the Lucas Pirates, Catherine was defeated by Lucas’s Sponge-Sponge Fruit and Six Powers techniques. The experience left her ashamed of her carelessness and determined not to underestimate opponents again 136 141.
After Lucas’s death, she questioned his surviving men about Supomachi Island’s slave trade, arms trade, and smuggling operations. She offered the freed prisoners safe passage to the next island. George asked to join the crew in gratitude, but she initially refused, considering repayment alone an inadequate foundation for membership. She later criticized Luo Chen for accepting him without first establishing who he was 145 146 148.
On Supomachi Island, Catherine fought Jessicano alongside Sabo. Although reluctant to compromise her pride as a swordswoman, she accepted a coordinated attack to prevent Jessicano from interfering with Luo Chen’s battle against Carlos. Her strongest strike, Bright Moon Slash, severely wounded Jessicano, but the effort exhausted her into unconsciousness 177 179 183.
Vice Captain at Sea
Catherine helped manage the growing crew, welcomed Lulith, and later trained her in swordsmanship. She also accepted Phil’s challenge to compare her Flowing Shadow Swordsmanship with his God-Slaying Style; their bout damaged the training room before George interrupted it 185 218.
She defended the Isel during attacks by the Charlotte Family and fought Pica alongside Singh. After defeating Pica with Sever Steel, she ordered the captured Donquixote officers restrained with seawater. When Violet appeared claiming to be Luo Chen’s future wife, Catherine allowed her aboard provisionally, pending the captain’s confirmation 208 209 347 349 350.
Before the voyage to Totto Land, Luo Chen confronted Catherine about her fear of overwhelmingly powerful enemies. She accepted that her constant worries had hindered her development and resolved to face the journey with greater confidence 378.
Forced Return to Mary Geoise
After Big Mom defeated Luo Chen, Mammon infiltrated the Isel and demanded Catherine’s return to the Holy Land. He offered restoration of the Glücksburg Clan’s status, but she rejected it and fought him. When he defeated her companions and threatened to kill everyone aboard, she agreed to leave on the condition that they be spared 390 392 393.
In Mary Geoise, Orange’s father made the threat ongoing: Catherine was to succeed her father as clan head and marry Orange before he would rescind the orders to destroy the Luo Chen Pirates. During this captivity, she opened the Glücksburg inheritance grounds and drew the Sword in the Stone 395 406.
By the wedding preparations, she had been separated from the crew for nearly a year and a half. Having resigned herself to a life in the Holy Land, she was overwhelmed with both joy and fear when Luo Chen appeared to rescue her 428 438.
Wedding Battle and Rescue
Catherine opposed Orange when he threatened to join the battle against her rescuers. She first offered to complete the marriage in exchange for their safe departure; when he refused, she fought him with the Sword in the Stone 440 441.
Unable to overcome him even with Sacrifice, she attempted to kill herself, believing her death would remove the reason her companions remained in danger. Her blood instead awakened the sword’s true inheritance, healed her throat, and granted her a dramatically stronger state 442.
Following her rescue, Catherine thanked the crew and vowed to become its sharp blade, protecting them for the rest of her life. News of the rescue spread worldwide through Morgans’s newspaper. She resumed sailing with the crew, whose later bounty notices listed her at 360 million Beli 445 454.
Casting Island and the Voyage to Dressrosa
Catherine accompanied Luo Chen to seek repairs for Rain Burial. When the swordsmith Wieland’s grandson Kamera was kidnapped, the pair entered Ailas Castle to rescue him. Catherine freed Kamera, then attempted to protect him and assist Luo Chen when Lester trapped them with his shadow powers 449 450.
Later, her enhanced Observation Haki helped expose Doflamingo’s attempt to use Violet to lure the crew into a trap. Catherine and Luo Chen knew about the instructions Violet had received, but left her to choose her own response without revealing their knowledge 456.
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Golden hair and clear blue eyes. During the awakened inheritance state, her eyes turn gold as sword intent enters her body 443.
- General bearing: Described as exceptionally beautiful, with a spirited, martial bearing 141 428.
- Clothing: Wears a white dress after the Lucas encounter; during her captivity in Mary Geoise, she wears soft armor and carries an ornate longsword with a gem-set hilt 141 428.
- Awakened state: Golden light surrounds her arm, and her appearance is compared to a majestic goddess of war 443.
Personality
Catherine is naturally quiet and aloof, often leaving conversation to more outgoing companions when the crew is not threatened. Her reserve does not prevent warmth: she quickly befriends Lulith, chats easily with Shirahoshi, and sets aside her usual cold expression when greeting Nayako 185 203 328 445.
She values dignity and personal freedom over inherited privilege. Her rejection of Orange is rooted not merely in dislike of the marriage, but in resentment toward families that abandoned her parents and later tried to reclaim authority over her. She repeatedly insists that she is a swordswoman of the Luo Chen Pirates, not a Celestial Dragon 109 217 392.
As vice captain, she is cautious about recruitment and willing to rebuke Luo Chen for endangering or neglecting his crew. That caution also becomes a weakness: Luo Chen identifies her fear and lack of confidence as obstacles to her swordsmanship, a criticism she ultimately accepts 146 148 207 378.
Her loyalty outweighs both pride and freedom. She accepts Sabo’s coordinated plan despite her reservations as a swordswoman, submits to captivity to save her companions, and later risks her life against Orange rather than watch them die 179 393 441 442.
Abilities & Skills
Flowing Shadow Swordsmanship
Catherine specializes in sword techniques that combine flying slashes, rapid movement, redirection, and defensive barriers 110 116 218.
| Technique | Application |
|---|---|
| Flowing Rain: Slash | Blocks Califo’s opening Shigan attack 110. |
| Flowing Wind | Produces an expanding, hurricane-like slash that becomes a sandstorm several stories high 110. |
| Flowing Gold Wall / Flowing Wall | Creates a barrier of slashing energy. Both Califo and Lucas break through it with concentrated force 110 136. |
| Flowing Shadow | Uses shadow-like movement to meet an opponent’s attack 110. |
| Flowing Water | Divides an incoming Rankyaku into two parts that pass on either side of her 116. |
| Sword Shadow: Three Wicked Moons | Launches three bright, crescent-shaped slashes 178. |
| Shadow Flow: Thousand Fathoms: Scatter | Destroys the remaining chain slashes after Sabo breaks most of Jessicano’s attack 179. |
| Sword Shadow Secret Technique: Bright Moon Slash | Her strongest attack during the Jessicano battle; severely wounds him after Sabo creates an opening 179. |
| One Sword Style: Flying Current Severance | Releases a spiraling wave of sword energy; fails to injure Pica’s Haki-coated body 348. |
| One Sword Style: Sky-Splitting Slash | Sends Pica flying while interrupting his attack on Singh 349. |
| One Sword Style: Sever Steel | Synchronizes her sword with the target’s natural “breathing,” cutting through Pica’s Haki-coated defense and defeating him 349. |
| Flying Swallow: Slash | Sends swallow-shaped sword energy into the sea during the crew’s attempt to escape Big Mom’s lightning 389. |
- Can intercept and destroy incoming cannonballs with flying slashes 118.
- Recognizes that Lucas’s absorption and release power does not handle simple cuts and thrusts in the same way as her projected attacks 136.
- Her strongest attacks can consume substantial stamina; the Jessicano battle leaves her unconscious from exhaustion 183.
Six Powers
Catherine is highly familiar with the Six Powers, particularly Soru and Geppo, and incorporates her own understanding into their use 179.
- Geppo: Uses aerial steps during the escape from Marineford 115.
- Soru: Uses high-speed movement in combat and develops a silent, traceless version for approaching an distracted opponent 177 179.
- Tekkai: Attempts to reduce the force of Lucas’s attack, though it does not prevent her defeat 136.
- Limit: Mammon’s mastery is explicitly described as dozens of times greater than hers, allowing him to follow her through the air undetected 390.
Sword in the Stone and Eight Virtues
The Glücksburg Clan’s holy sword grants Catherine access to its inherited Eight Virtues techniques. Its initial release produces golden sword energy and sword intent that causes other blades to ring and submit 406 440.
- Humility: An awakened flying slash that retains its strength inside Orange’s domain, forcing him to erect additional defenses 443.
- Sword of Honesty: Produces a pink flying slash 441.
- Honor: Produces a blood-red flying slash 441.
- Sacrifice: Shatter: The sixth move, which she uses before fully mastering it. Its attack takes the form of a winding snake, but loses to Orange’s compressed-air dragon 442.
- Protective light: Before its full awakening, the sword releases golden starlight that shields her from part of Orange’s attack 442.
- True awakening: Heals her self-inflicted throat wound and releases her ancestor’s power. She then easily destroys Orange’s lightning-sword attack 442 443.
- Limit: Obtaining the sword does not immediately confer full mastery; Catherine initially still requires training to use the inheritance effectively 440.
Observation Haki
Catherine initially lacks Observation Haki, leaving her unable to follow a CP0 guard’s rapid punches during the seizure of the Isel. By the Ailas Castle mission, she can use it to locate people inside the building 116 449.
- Detects Kamera and Lester in the castle basement alongside Luo Chen 449.
- Gains a much wider sensing range after the Sword in the Stone accepts her and cleanses her body and mind; no exact distance is given for her range 456.
- Helps detect the people delivering Doflamingo’s instructions to Violet 456.
- Limit: Her Observation Haki is blocked from outside Ailas Castle, though it functions once she enters 449.
Leadership and Training
- Commands the crew in Luo Chen’s absence, questions prisoners, and organizes the handling of captured enemies 145 349 350.
- Trains Lulith in swordsmanship, using sparring and post-bout reflection to improve her skills 218.
- Recognizes improvements in George’s Devil Fruit control and encourages his development during battle 209.
- Has poor cooking skills: her fried eggs are charred and nearly inedible, prompting Luo Chen to take over meal preparation 129 134.
- Makes a costly navigation mistake while tending Luo Chen, failing to record their escape route and leaving the ship lost without a Log Pose 129.
