Acquisition of the Rumble-Rumble Fruit 2 Stole the sacred fruit enshrined in Birka’s temple and fled for two years. Returned with lightning transformation, high-speed movement, Mantra, and lightning-based metalworking already available.
100 Million Volts: Thunder God 3 First demonstrated a gigantic body composed of lightning to defeat Kado after the latter’s awakened transformation exhausted him.
200 Million Volt: Thunder God 20 Explicitly described as a newly completed move, developed after watching Green Will fight Hogg. Produced a seven- to eight-meter lightning giant capable of clashing with Will’s enormous vine giant. Striking his back-mounted drums supplied additional current and made the form more solid.

Background / History

Kado’s Disciple and the Destruction of Birka

Enel was Kado’s most outstanding disciple and was originally regarded as his successor. He betrayed the temple, stole its sacred Rumble-Rumble Fruit, and disappeared for two years. Kado withheld Armament Haki instruction because of that betrayal 2.

Enel returned with four priests and fifty divine guards to take revenge on Birka and seize Kado’s position. Luo Chen later explained that Birka’s residents had mocked Enel for lacking wings 2 73.

Despite suffering injuries from Kado’s Haki and awakened Zoan speed, Enel defeated his former master. He then allowed Luo Chen to kill Kado and recruited him as a priest. After appointing Luo Chen his fifth divine priest, Enel destroyed Birka with Raigo and departed aboard the Ark of God 3 4.

Seizure of Sky Island

Enel forced Gan Fall to acknowledge him as the new god and demanded a public transfer of authority. His forces occupied the temple, and Gan Fall announced his abdication. Enel ordered the former divine soldiers into forced labor and Gan Fall thrown into the sea 6 7.

His underlying objective was to build the Ark Maxim using Upper Yard’s gold. Luo Chen helped secure his rule against the Shandia, and Enel publicly confirmed him as the fifth priest after his assignment 14 15.

Green Will’s Invasion and Hogg’s Challenge

When Green Will’s pirates attacked, Enel recognized their captain as a serious threat and warned his priests not to underestimate the invaders. Although he ordered them to protect the residents, he deliberately delayed his own intervention to strengthen the population’s dependence on him 18 23.

Enel stopped Will from draining the unconscious Hogg’s life force, defeated his vine giant, and executed him with 100 Million Volts: El Thor. He left Luo Chen to handle the aftermath 20 21 23.

After recovering, Hogg challenged Enel to free Sky Island. Enel repeatedly offered him a subordinate position, but Hogg refused. Their final clash ended with Hogg’s death beneath Enel’s Thunder God attack 26 27 28.

Luo Chen’s Departure and the Survival Game

When Luo Chen declared that his service had been temporary and requested passage back to the Blue Sea, Enel offered him freedom if he survived ten moves. Their battle escalated from staff combat to lightning restraints and a massive El Thor strike; Luo Chen emerged alive and subsequently identified himself as a former priest 38 39 41.

Enel turned the conflict between the Straw Hats, Shandia, priests, and divine soldiers into a survival game. He intended its final winners to accompany him to Fairy Vearth, also called Endless Vearth. He treated his own prediction of the survivor count as infallible and demanded that an extra survivor die rather than admit it was wrong 41 54 55.

Destruction Plan and Defeat

Enel overwhelmed several of the surviving fighters, but Wyper temporarily brought him down using Seastone and a Reject Dial. Enel restarted his heart with electricity, removed the Seastone boot, and resumed attacking 55.

Luffy proved immune to his lightning. Enel adapted with Mantra, physical attacks, and a heated golden halberd, then trapped Luffy’s hand in a huge golden ball and cast him from the Ark Maxim 58 59 60 61.

After Sanji’s interference disrupted the ship, Enel repaired it and resumed Despair, his island-destruction plan. He bombarded the settlements with lightning and obliterated Angel Island with Raigo before preparing a larger blast against the remaining Sky Island 64 66 68.

Luffy used the golden ball to redirect the current inside the larger Raigo and disperse it. He then shattered Enel’s golden tridents and drove him into the Golden Bell, ending the battle. Enel later regained consciousness aboard the Ark Maxim; Luo Chen spared him but threatened to kill him at their next encounter. Enel continued toward the moon, which he regarded as Fairy Vearth 69 70.

Appearance

  • Wingless: His lack of wings made him a target of mockery in Birka 73.
  • Four small drums: Mounted behind his back and used to generate or supplement lightning attacks 20 26 55.
  • Golden Staff: His customary handheld weapon, frequently reshaped during combat 2 26.
  • Thunder God form: A gigantic, electrically charged figure; the 200-million-volt version stands approximately seven to eight meters tall 20.

Personality

Enel equates superior strength with the right to rule. He argues that the strongest person should become god, regards ordinary people as mortals beneath him, and considers lives and land his to take. His insistence that a god’s prophecy cannot be wrong leads him to demand deaths simply to preserve his predicted survivor count 2 54 60.

His cruelty is often theatrical. He turns warfare into entertainment, allows Kamakiri five minutes of unanswered attacks, and accidentally falls asleep because those attacks cannot hurt him. During his destruction campaign, he openly enjoys watching the inhabitants flee 46 66.

Despite his arrogance, Enel can assess danger and adapt. He acknowledges Green Will’s strength, warns his subordinates against carelessness, and changes tactics when Luffy’s rubber body renders lightning ineffective 18 58 59.

His apparent generosity remains tied to his authority: he recruits unusual or strong opponents, offers defeated challengers subordinate positions, and portrays sparing people as divine mercy 3 27 62.

Abilities & Skills

Rumble-Rumble Fruit

Enel can generate, control, and become lightning through his Logia fruit 2 19.

  • Elemental body: Ordinary weapons can pass through him, after which his body reforms as electricity 5 55.
  • Selective transformation: Can alter the part of his body about to be struck, avoiding even an Armament Haki attack if he anticipates it correctly 2.
  • Lightning Flash: Transforms into lightning for rapid repositioning 27.
  • Conductor travel: Moves through the Ark Maxim’s gold to reach an opponent 59.
  • Heart restart: Uses electrical shocks to restart his own heart after Wyper’s Reject Dial brings him down 55.

Mantra / Observation Haki

Enel combines Observation Haki with his lightning body to read radio waves and overhear conversations throughout Sky Island. His coverage is more detailed than the similarly wide-ranging perception possessed by Aisa and Luo Chen 14 56.

  • Detects distant arrivals, individual presences, and voices disappearing after defeat or death 14 28 62.
  • Predicts deliberate attacks closely enough to dominate exchanges with Luffy 59.
  • Conceals his presence from other combatants 19.
  • Cannot reliably predict the paths of Luffy’s attacks when they rebound unpredictably from a wall 60.

Lightning Techniques

Technique Demonstrated effect
Discharge Releases concentrated current directly into a target. Demonstrated outputs include 50 million volts against Hogg and 100 million against Luo Chen and Luffy 27 38 58.
Thunderbird Forms a bird-shaped lightning projectile; introduced at 30 million volts against Kado 2.
Lightning Dragon / Thunder Dragon Produces a dragon-shaped electrical attack, used at 50 million volts against Kado and 60 million against later opponents 2 20 28 58.
Thunder Beast / Hino Creates an animal-shaped lightning attack; the 60-million-volt Thunder Beast intercepts Zoro’s Seastone-assisted charge 5 55.
Lightning Snake Launches a snake-shaped current from his palm 27.
Thunder Vine: Rope Binding Restrains Luo Chen’s ankles before a larger lightning strike 38.
El Thor Calls down a powerful lightning strike; a 100-million-volt version executes Green Will 19 21.
Inazuma Used both as a follow-up strike against Hogg and as a lightning barrage that brings down the Lord of the Sky 27 54.

Thunder God

Enel surrounds himself with immense electrical power to assume a gigantic deity-like form 3 20.

  • Uses enormous lightning fists in close combat 3 28.
  • Can strengthen the form by striking his four drums with the Golden Staff and absorbing the resulting current 20.
  • Remains vulnerable to Luffy’s attacks despite its size and electrical output 69.

Thunder Metallurgy

Enel uses electrical heat to melt and reshape gold, turning his staff into halberds, tridents, and paired weapons 2 38 69.

  • Adds piercing force, electrical current, and searing heat to weapon strikes 3 27.
  • Burns Luffy despite his immunity to lightning 58.
  • Melts part of the Ark Maxim’s golden wall into a huge ball around Luffy’s hand 60.

Despair, Mamaragan, and Raigo

The Ark Maxim expands Enel’s destructive reach by producing thunderclouds that he controls with his fruit 59 60.

  • Despair: The ship-assisted plan to blanket Sky Island with destructive thunderclouds 59 60.
  • Mamaragan: Sends repeated lightning strikes across the Shandia village, Angel Island, and Upper Yard 66.
  • Raigo: A spherical mass of thunderclouds capable of destroying an island; used against Birka and Angel Island 4 68.
  • Super-sized Raigo: Intended to destroy the remaining Sky Island, but dispersed when Luffy redirects its current with the conductive golden ball 68 69.

Weaknesses and Limitations

  • Rubber: His lightning cannot injure Luffy’s rubber body; heated weapons and physical attacks remain effective 58 59.
  • Seastone: Wyper uses it to suppress his fruit powers and make him vulnerable to a Reject Dial strike 55.
  • Reaction speed: Lightning-fast movement does not make his nervous system equally fast. Kado’s awakened speed can overwhelm his responses despite Mantra 3.
  • Physical vulnerability: Haki-equipped opponents can injure or drive him back when his defenses fail 2 3 27.
  • Energy reserves: An early assessment describes his attack quality as close to his later strength, but notes that he cannot yet unleash as many high-energy attacks with minimal exertion 24.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Golden Staff — Melee weapon, electrical conductor, and raw material for his heated halberds and tridents 2 27 38.
  • Four back-mounted drums — Struck with the staff to produce lightning constructs or reinforce Thunder God 20 55 58.
  • Ark of God — Vessel used to leave Birka with his followers 4.

  • Cloud Dial — Produces Island Cloud that he shapes into a floating seat 54.

Relationships

  • Kado — Former master who intended Enel to succeed him. Their relationship ended in betrayal and a battle over Birka’s godhood 2 3.
  • Luo Chen — Recruited as the fifth priest after their shared revenge against Kado. Their alliance ended when Luo Chen sought freedom; Luo Chen later spared the defeated Enel while promising future hostility 3 4 38 70.
  • Satori, Ohm, Shura, and Gedatsu — His original four priests, who accompanied him against Birka and served his Sky Island regime 2 4.
  • Gan Fall — Deposed predecessor. Enel forced his abdication and refused to answer his later questions about the enslaved divine soldiers 7 41.
  • Green Will — Invading New World pirate whose combat techniques helped Enel complete his stronger Thunder God form; subsequently executed by Enel 20 21.
  • Hogg — Marine challenger who rejected recruitment and died trying to overthrow him 27 28.
  • Wyper — Shandia resistance leader who temporarily incapacitated him with Seastone and a Reject Dial 55.
  • Monkey D. Luffy — Natural counter to his lightning and the opponent who ultimately defeated him at the Golden Bell 58 69.
  • Nami — Taken aboard the Ark Maxim as a prospective companion; later targeted when she tried to escape with her crewmates 55 56 63 64.
